British Intelligence: the JIB and the JIC

Professor Thomas Berger delivered this year's Saki Ruth Dockrill Memorial Lecture on 11 November 2014. The event was supported by the Great Britain Sasakawa Foundation. Prof Berger spoke on: 'PERILOUS REMEMBRANCES: CONFLICT, COOPERATION AND COMMEMORATION IN EUROPE AND ASIA'. 
Thomas Berger is an Associate Professor in the Department of International Relations at Boston University. He is the author of War, Guilt and World Politics after World War II (Cambridge 2012),  Cultures of Antimilitarism: National Security in Germany and Japan (Johns Hopkins University Press, 1998) and co-editor of  Japan in International Politics: Beyond the Reactive State (Lynne Rienner, 2007). The lecture was recorded on 11 November 2014.

Why some international missions are doomed to keep making the same mistakes

Professor Beatrice Heuser holds the Chair in International Relations at the University of Reading.  A graduate of the University of London (Bedford College and LSE) and the University of Oxford (DPhil), she holds a Higher Doctorate (Habilitation) from the Philipps-University of Marburg. From 1991-2003 she taught at the Department of War Studies, King’s College London, where she last held a Chair in International and Strategic Studies. She has also taught at four French universities/higher education institutions, and at two German universities.  In 1997/8 she spent a sabbatical at NATO headquarters as a consultant/intern. From 2003-2007 she was Director of Research at the Military History Research Office of the Bundeswehr. Her publications include The Evolution of Strategy: Thinking War from Antiquity to the Present (2010);Reading Clausewitz (2002); a recent book on insurgencies and counterinsurgency in theory and practice (in German), and several other works on strategy (especially nuclear), NATO, and on Cold War international relations.

War Studies Research Seminar: Mistakes and Misunderstandings in IR

On 29 August 2013, the House of Commons voted against the prospect of UK military action against the Assad regime in Syria. The decision helped shape the Western approach to the Syrian crisis and marked a significant moment in British politics; raising important new questions about the constitutional basis for ‘who decides’ when Britain goes to war. On 20 January 2015 Professor John Gearson chaired a public talk by James Gray MP and Mark Lomas QC on these and other issues raised in their major new book: 'Who Takes Britain To War?' (The History Press, 2014). 

James Gray has been MP for North Wiltshire since 1997. A former Shadow Defence Minister (who resigned over Iraq), he is a member of the House of Commons Defence Select Committee, Chairman of the All Party Parliamentary Group for the Armed Forces and the Armed Forces Parliamentary Trust. 

Mark Lomas was called to the Bar at the Middle Temple in 1997 and took silk in 2003. He practiced for thirty-two years at the Common Law and Commercial Bar, specialising in professional negligence and insurance matters.  

The event was hosted by the Centre for Defence Studies.

James Gray MP & Mark Lomas QC: Who takes Britain to war?

Richard Caplan is Professor of International Relations at the University of Oxford. He has also been a Specialist-Advisor to the Select Committee on Foreign Affairs in the UK House of Commons; a Research Associate at the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS), Editor of World Policy Journal, and New York Director of the Institute for War and Peace Reporting (IWPR).

On 9 February 2015 Professor Caplan came to the Department of War Studies to give a talk on ‘Responsibility to Protect: Old Wine in New Bottles?’. The event was part of the CSD Seminar series.

The LSE European Institute has been a Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence since 2009.
