This song is about the relationship between Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. This whole  London Underground line is named after Queen Victoria, and I therefore regard this to be the loving heart of the album. 
Both Queen and Prince Consort were attracted to each other on first meeting and soon fell in love (Victoria being keen to snap Albert up rather than his bothers and cousins). For some lines of the lyrics I have adapted snippets from their love letters.
Michelle Sheehan my lovely wife sings much of this. She has a wonderful voice and I wish she'd find time to sing on more of my songs!
Prince Albert died early (aged 42) and Victoria mourned him for the rest of her life - always dressed in black. 
This song hopefully conveys the joy of being in love, of having a family - but also of of bereavement and loss.

Victoria

Near Pimlico station lies 'Tate Britain'. This track is inspired by 'Merry-Go-Round' by Mark Gertler, which is displayed in the gallery. I first saw this painting as a boy and have been fascinated with it ever since. It was painted in 1916, during the First World War and speaks to me of the inanity and unrelenting horror of war.

I have composed a waltz to fit in with the carousel theme. For the middle section, (1:30 - 2:50) I have adapted a waltz tune from 'Der Rosenkavalier' - an opera by Richard Strauss.
The mutterings you can hear in the background at the end are the notes I have taken whilst looking at the painting recently, read forwards and backwards simultaneously.

Pimlico

In 1772 Stockwell achieved some notoriety as the scene of a supposed haunting. In January of that year, Mrs Golding an elderly lady who lived with her servant Anne Robinson, was troubled by several unexplained occurrences. These included the cups, saucers and plates falling to the ground in her kitchen, water boiling in the pan, and furniture moving. Being so scared, Mrs Golding moved to other properties over the next few days, but the disturbances continued. It then dawned on her and her friends that Anne, the servant girl was causing all the trouble.
In this song I have taken this story as my starting point, but then continued as if the ghost was actually real.
In the second part of the song I have borrowed lines from two poems, 'lyke wake dirge' (anon) and 'The Fairies' (William Allingham,)as they both seem to fit the feel of the song.

Plough Down Sillion Shine

This song is co-written with Jethro Harper and had its origins in our days in My Octopus George (myspace.com/myoctopusgeorge).
The song is about the hope that one day love will conquer hate. Brixton has certainly seen its troubles in the past. Verse 1 refers to the original generation of Caribbean immigrants coming over to the UK on the 'Windrush', and the discrimination they often received - 'no blacks, no Irish, no dogs', was written in many windows as the people looked for accommodation. In Coldharbour Lane (a street in Brixton) the newcomers could receive help finding jobs. Verse 2 moves on to the Brixton riots in the 1980s. The choruses and middle part of the song look forward to a time when I believe hatred will finally be overcome.
As been hinted at throughout the album in differing guises, the train tune from 'Walthamstow Central' finally comes back to close the album. The passengers may change during the journey, but the train stays the same...

My mum was a child minder. Growing up, there were plenty of other kids at home. One was called Stevie. When confronted with something unusual, he'd say "That's a funny habitat!" To my shame, sometimes my brother and I used to tease him. This song is dedicated to him.

Here 'Blackhorse Road' has been re-imagined: a legendary thoroughfare in Ancient Greece, busy with horsemen.

This song acts as an introduction to the project, being the first station on the Victoria Line (travelling from north to south). It's supposed to reflect the motion of the train, with a contrasting central section about the sense of dread and dreariness about commuting to work. 'Strawberry Thief' is a textile design by the Victorian polymath, William Morris - who was born in Walthamstow.

This song is supposed to reflect the tube station through the following:
1. This station is near the River Lea. The lyrics at the beginning are folk-ditty like; something a boater in years gone by might sing.
2. I used to get off here to get the train home after work. Often, particularly if I had a few drinks, I would visit the fast food eateries in the vicinity and regret it afterwards...

Tottenham Hale

The Tube name 'Seven Sisters' refers to seven ancient trees, which were once a landmark in the area. Sadly they have long gone. They were planted in a circle and were mentioned in medieval texts etc. There is a picture of them made with tiles on one of the platforms.
In this song, some medieval pilgrims have stopped off at the 'seven sisters' on the way to their destination - perhaps Canterbury, or somewhere like it. 
My wonderful wife Michelle is singing backing vocals in the verses.

Seven Sisters

This song is about someone who is under pressure at work and is at the point of breakdown. She commutes into central London from Finsbury Park where she lives. The 'balloon' and 'duelling pistols' in the lyrics (verses) refer to the mosaic pictures on the platform walls at the station (see picture). These images trigger escapist fantasies - freeing her momentarily from her unhappy life. In the chorus, her flat begins to manifest her anxieties. '1 Finsbury Park' where she lives is a fictional address.
The coda (waltz) is about myself being stranded after a night out, missing the last tube and being thrown at the mercy of the night bus. Michelle is my wife; Clara my daughter. The coda is inspired by a waltz section from Mahler's 9th Symphony (Mvt II).

Finsbury Park

The seed of this song came from an encounter I had with a disabled homeless man on Upper Street in Islington - after a friend's birthday party. I was originally very dismissive of him - but then decided to follow him and I had a conversation with him in a square somewhere in the area. He was from Afghanistan and his leg was blown off by a mine. Suddenly my whole perspective shifted. I guess this song is about being kind and looking after each other and trying not to be judgemental.
It is also about people, whom due to circumstances beyond their control (ie poverty, emotional difficulties), don't have the opportunity to nurture the talents, skills and gifts they might have. The second verse is taken almost verbatim from a Victorian newspaper article which describes an art/craft exhibition for working class men in the local Royal Agricultural Hall - people whom ordinarily would not have the chance to display their work.

Highbury and Islington

'Kings Cross' is so called, because King George IV (1762-1830) had a monument to himself built in the area. This tall column, with a statue of the king at the top (which itself became known as the 'King's Cross'), has long been demolished. It was very unpopular - as was the king. Thus the lyrics for the first part of this song are about how silly the king is and how his subjects related to him.
The first part of the song segues into the second - 'St Pancras', with a shift of mood and texture. In my humble opinion, this is one of my favourite buildings in London and I felt it deserved being set to music. The cities at the end of the song are four places you can visit via the Eurostar from St Pancras.

St Pancras

Coming up the stairs, I come into the open,

Kings Cross / St. Pancras

I was born and brought up just outside of London in Hertfordshire. When growing up, my parents used to take myself and my siblings to London for many wonderful days out. This is where my love for London stems from. 
We used to arrive at Euston - therefore I have always considered Euston to be a kind of gateway to London. (In fact there used to be a Greek looking gateway at Euston which was demolished in the 1960s - see the picture).
Occasionally I saw some things in London which frightened and disturbed me. In this song, 'Euston' has a voice and talks to the boy - introducing something of the darkness and malevolence of the city.
It is supposed to run straight into 'Warren Street' - thus the cliff hanger ending!
