I wrote/produced this piece for a contest hosted by Scorbit (www.scorbit.org/contest/), which was a sort of exercise in video game scoring. The premise was to compose a 3-layer, 30-second, looping piece of music based on the concept artwork provided on the contest page. Layer 1 is the base layer, which is low intensity, and could be appropriate when the player is exploring the terrain of a level, and isn’t in danger. Layer 2 is the mid intensity layer, and may come on when a character engages with enemies. Layer 3 is the high intensity layer, and may come on when a character is fighting a boss, or is badly hurt. The way I organized this Soundcloud upload is that first, layer 1 plays, then layer 2 kicks in on top of that, and then finally layer 3 comes in over the first two. Fun times.

Infected Affection

For an assignment, I had to make a track that I thought was representative of aspects of how music will sound in 100 years and it turned out pretty weird. It came together in only 6 hours so I'm pretty happy with it for what it is

There are a few angles that led to this being what it is. I'm not bold enough to say that "most" pop music from the future would sound exactly like this, but of course I can't access the exact tools they'll be using. In short, I believe there will be a marriage of synthetic content and human improvisation (in the vein of one of the most important aspects of Jazz and even early Rock performance). How I chose to illustrate this was by having an electronic base of a track(in this case, a MidTempo heavy bass type track) and integrate a more natural selection of instruments as well. For this, I put in piano that was pretty "raw" in terms of time alignment to the grid, so it would sound like someone playing over the track, same with the acoustic guitar. I then incorporated an improvised acoustic guitar solo into the second half of the first "Drop" that inadvertently came out with a bit of a Middle Eastern flavor to it (I think globalization fits nicely into my idea of 100 years from now). Additionally. toward the end of the track, I recorded an improvisation on my new kalimba (the piano and guitar were VSTs). I think this juxtaposition of these elements with the more "gritty"/industrial electronic timbres is very interesting and not out of the realm of possibility.

In terms of the composition, I wanted to make a statement of where I think we'll be culturally. There are a few angles to this as well. One characteristic I can foresee is impatience, as that is already occurring in our modern society, this is why I have made a 2 minute progressive track. In 2 minutes you essentially get 2 songs, as I change the time signature from 4/4 to 3/4 and I change the key as well. I picture a general mood of dissatisfaction/hopelessness and the world being a not-so-great place (I'm just pessimistic like that and I like dystopian fiction), so I wanted the first half to be in Phrygian (bonus: I think pop music will get tired of using only major/minor). However, I then shift to a Major key because I think that while people do like to indulge in negativity when experiencing it, they also do yearn for some hope, so I thought I would make the second section more uplifting. I knew I wanted to record my new kalimba, which is tuned to C Major, and I'm too lazy to retune it, so I wrote the first half in E Phrygian, which is relative to C Major, and made for a seamless transition.

Electronic music composer and producer. This is where I put completed works of mine that aren't @Valkyro releases. Electronic music is my foundation, but I do really enjoy branching out to different genres, both in terms of listening and creation. Valkyro is my main narrative experimental electronic music project, but sometimes I like to create things that exist outside of that bubble. I studied Sound Design/Audio Post-Production for Visual & Media Arts at Emerson College, while also pursuing additional education in Music Theory and Music Technology at Berklee College of Music.
