공명 훈련실.
조명이 어두워지고, 돔 형태의 투영 천장에는 환상적인 숲이 떠올랐다.

“오늘의 페어 테스트 과제:
자신을 동물이라고 상상하고 가상 공간에서 살아남으십시오.
필요한 것은 단 하나, ‘서로의 삶을 느낄 수 있는가’입니다.”

앨런과 엘리나는 서로를 바라보았다.

“어떤 동물이 될까?”

“음… 짐승처럼 강한 것도 방법이지만.”

앨런은 노트를 펼쳤다. 여러 기법 이름 중에서 그의 시선은 역동의 리듬이라는 단어에 멈췄다.

역동의 리듬: 리듬 있게, 즐겁게 살아가는 것. 긴장과 어려움조차 ‘함께 나아가는 것’으로 바꾸는 기법.

“리듬으로 산다는 건… 괜찮네.”

“그럼 물총새는 어때?”

“뭐?”

“빠르게 날아, 정확히 물속으로 뛰어드는 새. 협력과 분담, 고요와 순간이 공존하는 삶. 지금 우리 같잖아.”

앨런은 놀란 얼굴로 고개를 끄덕였다.

테스트 시작.
시뮬레이션 속에서 그들의 몸은 조류 모델로 변환되었다.
날개를 펼치고, 바람을 읽으며, 하늘을 날았다.

처음에는 서툴렀다.
한쪽이 날면, 다른 쪽은 어긋났다.
먹이를 노려도, 타이밍이 맞지 않았다.

“잠깐, 엘리나—지금 뭘 보고 있었어?”

“…지형이 아니라, 네 움직임만 보고 있었어. 시야가 좁아졌어.”

“좋아, 다음엔 공동 승리법을 쓰자. 한쪽이 이기는 게 아니라, 둘이 함께 잡는 거야.”

물은 고요했다.
투명한 거울처럼 하늘과 숲을 비추었다.
가끔 불어오는 바람에 잔물결이 생기고, 풀 그림자가 흔들렸다.

그때—
날개의 그림자가 드리웠다.
푸르고, 가늘고, 날카롭지만, 어딘가 부드러움이 남아 있는 윤곽.
앨런과 엘리나. 두 마리 물총새가 수면 위를 미끄러지듯 날아왔다.

작은 물고기들은 즉시 몸을 숨겼다.
물은 알고 있었다.
하늘에서 오는 존재는 때로 아름답고, 때로 무자비하다는 것을.

그러나 이번에는 달랐다.

한 마리가 고도를 낮추고,
다른 한 마리가 바람을 읽고, 흐름을 느끼며 약간 어긋나 착수했다.

그리고 동시에, 두 개의 파문이 일어났다.

물고기들은 도망칠 틈을 잃었다.
1초도 안 되는 순간에, 두 물총새는 서로를 보완하는 궤도로 움직였다.

물은 조용히 지켜보고 있었다.
그것은 포식이 아니라 연주였다.
두 날개가 연주하는, 자연의 조화.

날갯짓이 멀어지자, 물은 다시 거울이 되었다.
그러나 수면 깊은 곳에는 작은 여운이 남아 있었다.

이 하늘에, 이토록 아름다운 공명이 있었던가?

예기치 못한 폭풍.
시야가 가려지고, 바람이 날개를 찢으려 했다.

“무서워, 앨런.”

“바람을 적으로 보지 마. 하늘의 일부야.”

“…고마워.”

바람은 분노했다.
하늘을 뒤흔들고, 가지를 부러뜨리고, 잎을 찢으며,
날아다니는 모든 것을 떨어뜨리려 했다.
그것이 폭풍의 사명이었다.

그때, 두 개의 그림자가 나타났다.
앨런과 엘리나. 작고, 가볍고, 깨지기 쉬운 존재.

바람은 시험했다.
급격한 난기류. 차가운 횡풍. 뒤틀린 상승기류.
그러나 그들은 견뎌냈다.

날개는 삐걱거리고, 궤도는 흔들렸다.
그럼에도 한쪽이 무너지면, 다른 한쪽이 안쪽으로 다가갔다.
한쪽이 떠오르면, 다른 한쪽이 바람을 가르며 안정의 지점을 만들었다.

폭풍은 깨달았다.
이것은 외로운 비행이 아니다.

한 마리로는 결코 넘을 수 없는 바람의 벽.
그러나 두 마리라면, 날개가 ‘돛’이 되고, ‘방패’가 되고, ‘격려’가 된다.

바람은 울부짖었다.
그러나 점차, 그 울부짖음은 분노가 아니라 찬미로 변해갔다.

“잘 날았다, 작은 자들아.
너희의 공명은 폭풍마저 아름답게 바꾸는구나.”

마침내 폭풍은 잦아들었다.

그리고 하늘에는—
무지개가 걸렸다.

천장에 빛나는 글자가 떠올랐다.

칭호 수여: ‘공익의 자’
너희는 상호 보완과 이해, 침묵과 공명의 황금비를 달성했다.

앨런은 미소 지으며 말했다.
“우린 드디어 ‘그저 쌍둥이’가 아니게 되었네.”

엘리나는 눈물이 맺힌 눈으로 고개를 끄덕였다.
“아니… 이제야 ‘페어’가 된 거야.”

손이 겹쳐진 순간, 작은 빛이 태어났다.
아직은 약했지만,
미래를 향해 걸어가기엔 충분히 따뜻했다.

I am specifically interested in situations where composers anticipate and strategize future third-party remixing of their compositions as part of a larger and complex rhetorical strategy that plays out across physical and digital spaces. We find this type of thinking—the asking of “how might the text be rewritten?” and “why, where, and for whom might this text be rewritten?”—an increasingly important set of questions in a digital age characterized, for instance, by swift, easy, and deep web searching and by copying and pasting practices.
