As if anticipating total fuck-up, long before Russia started invading Ukraine, I wrote a mini album called "Metta" and made a music video for it together with my friends. It was supposed to be released in March 2022, but I decided to release it only now.

I deeply empathize with all those who suffer from my country's actions in Ukraine, Syria, Libya, Armenia, Georgia, Central Asia and inside Russia - from civilians to military, from activists to journalists. I hate the government that now rules in Russia, all the security forces that have unleashed an apparatus of repression that destroys those who oppose the decisions of the ruling elite. I hate the deeply chauvinistic rhetoric of the propaganda that turns my people into Nazis and cannon fodder. I pray for all the women and children humiliated, killed and defamed by our "patriots. I empathize with all the oppressed peoples of Russia. Buryats and Yakuts, Tuvans and Tatars, Mari and Nanai, Avars and Dargins, and all the "non-Russian" nationalities, oppressed and gradually erased from the landscape of the country, not only due to mobilization in the front lines, but also in peacetime, erased from history along with their languages, traditions and cultures.

Seemingly aggressive at first glance, "Metta" speaks of love and acceptance. "Metta" in Pali translates to loving kindness, friendliness, benevolence, harmony and goodwill. This music is about the good slam and the release of all negativity into the dance. I believe goodness will prevail, we will redeem all our mistakes and build a new society based on awareness and faith in humanity. I know love will win and the darkest night is before the dawn.

Как будто предчувствуя тотальный пиздец, задолго до начала вторжения России в Украину, я написал мини альбом “Metta” и вместе с друзьями снял клип к этому треку. По плану релиз должен был состояться в марте 2022 года, но я решился его выпускать только сейчас.

Я глубоко сопереживаю всем тем, кто страдает от действий моей страны в Украине, Сирии, Ливии, Армении, Грузии, Центральной Азии и внутри России - от мирных жителей до военных, от активистов до журналистов. Я ненавижу власть, которая правит сейчас в России, всех силовиков, развязавших аппарат репрессий, уничтожающий тех, кто против решений правящей верхушки. Я ненавижу глубоко шовинистскую риторику пропаганды, превращающей мой народ в нацистов и пушечное мясо.  Я молюсь за всех женщин и детей, униженных, убитых и опороченных нашими “патриотами”. Я сопереживаю всем угнетенным народам России. Буряты и якуты, тувинцы и татары, марийцы и нанайцы, аварцы и даргинцы, и все все “нерусские” национальности, притесненные и постепенно стертые с ландшафта страны, не только вследствии мобилизации в первых рядах, но и в мирное время, вычеркнутые из истории вместе со своими языками, традициями и культурами. 

На первый взгляд кажущийся агрессивным, альбом “Metta” говорит о любви и принятии. “Metta” в переводе с языка Пали - любящая доброта, дружелюбие, благожелательность, согласие и добрая воля. Эта музыка  про добрый слэм и выплеск всего негативного в танец. Я верю, добро восторжествует, мы искупим все наши ошибки и будем строить новое общество, основанное на осознанности и вере в человека. Я знаю, любовь победит, а самая темная ночь - перед рассветом.

Нет войне! Россия будет свободной!

In his new mini-album, Viner explores the colonial history of Central Asia. He protests against nostalgia for the "great past" of the USSR and imperialist tendencies, deeply ingrained in the consciousness of the older generation that largely defines the current politics of the region. Being clearly against and tired of the same-old-same-old tales of how marvelous the past was, Viner in his 'Navro'z' calls to question these concepts, examines the anxieties of the present, and explores the possibilities of the future. The title itself hints at a new chapter of post-Soviet countries’ history.

In Zoroastrian tradition, Navro’z is a festival of spring and a symbol of a new beginning, a new life. People who celebrate Navro'z believe that the more good you do on this day, the luckier the year will be. And it's about time we all have a lucky year, for a change.

Meticulous work with composition has turned this dance album into a true blockbuster. Viner, a master of unexpected turns, switches gears from ample emotional moments to fantastic intense choreography of Central Asian rhythms. Epic scenes alternate with harsh slaps and yells, as if reflecting the unstable psyche of the author, who transitions from almost childlike calmness (hello "Boards of Canada") to difficult-to-control rage.

If we go post-colonial, we go full speed and unravel the similarities in the music of the oppressed. Uzbek vocals by Turgan Alimatov, monotonously repeating “nova", sound like a reminder of possible freedom from the metropolis; Asian drums of Naubat sound distinctly Central African. In G'azab feat. Wulffluw XCIV, Uzbek instruments [doyra, kairok, surnai, thunderous qurnai] sound like a potent mix of Paris vogue ball and footwork of the backstreets of Chicago — unabashedly delving into a multi-layered concept without losing its dance dynamics.

As an Asian Russian artist in exile, Viner, through his own experience, has realized that the personal is political and now challenges the widespread escapist belief that music — or any form of art, for that matter — is apolitical. By blending seemingly unmixable music styles, Viner hopes we can navigate the rapids of decolonization smoothly and without violence.
