Istanbul, Byzantium, Constantinople... Since its founding many thousands of years ago, the city situated on the Bosphorous has been called by many names by various peoples. Yet, perhaps the most interesting people to encounter this ancient metropolis were the Rus: mixed descendants of the Slavic and Norse races. The children of viking settlers and raiders, who at this point had made much of modern Russia their home, would continue ever Southwards until they reached the capitol of Eastern Rome in the 850s AD, which they would come to call "Miklagard". After raiding the countryside and attempting to sack the city, (which completely failed on account of its extensive fortification and the Byzantines' centuries of experience fighting barbarians), the Roman Emperor Basil II would come to admire their fearlessness and created what is known as the Varangian guard- an elite class of soldiers assigned with the important task of protecting the emperor.
