I created this song titled “Together” (Chocolate
Blood) with the goal of raising awareness about some things that
people might be uncomfortable talking about. I’m not looking to change
anyone’s mind. I’m just hoping that you have a new perspective on a
sensitive topic. I am very guilty of sitting back without any action.
I want to change that. I also have some ways you can change this in
yourself. 

Privilege does not mean that everything has been handed to you. It
means that there are some things you will never have to experience
because of who you are. White privilege is receiving benefits from
society that are unearned but come directly from your skin color. How
you physically appear today is where you are seated in our culture’s
standards. It does not discount you or your family’s past struggles. It has to do with you, right here, right now. Ignoring your social status is being blind to
the culture we live in.

When white privilege is discussed, people often hide behind a
veil of silence, or even worse, set up a defense. I do it. But, NOW is
the time to acknowledge your privilege without becoming defensive.

What can you do? Mind your inner-perspective. Change your tone of
voice and expressions towards people of other groups. Do not assume
people struggle because of their own faults. Do not marginalize other
people’s gender, race, class, or sexual orientation. Speak up when you
hear oppressive comments, but do not speak on behalf of that other
group. Ask and actually listen to your friends of color when they talk
about racism. Do something without recognition. A person with
privilege is an ally when they first recognize their privilege and
then fight for the group they are not a part of. Saying and doing are
two different things.
