What is afternoon blues?

The afternoon slump is a real, biological phenomenon that affects all of us – and, in fact, is a sign that your circadian rhythm (biological clock) is running smoothly. Most of us resort to caffeine to treat the midday blues only to feel worse later when its effects wear off.

Painting by Kawabe Masahisa

The artist Kawabe Masahisa (1901–1990) depicted a human head surrounded by various machinery in his 1924 work Mekanizumu (“Mechanism”).

The functions of the tools, pipes, screws, bolts and gears are difficult to guess, as one’s perception is limited and thus not able to contextualize the individual elements. The cold and grey-colored impression of the machinery is placed in contrast to the skin-coloured head of the human and the red of his dissected throat.

The human parts blend almost naturally with the mechanical surroundings and vanish gradually while screws and gears are being assembled around them. A few mysterious objects such as a small typewriter and a piece of a map beneath the head, and the writing “L’Esprit Nouveau” in capital letters on the upper left side, attract one’s attention.

On closer observation one will notice that these elements are made of actual paper, and they are not the only ones. Kawabe inserted further collage parts, such as small pipes, screws, and bolts, very precisely and with careful regard to the oil paint.

By creating this illusionistic atmosphere the boundaries between the painted and collage elements merge naturally. The striking writing is a reference to the artists’ knowledge and awareness of avant-garde tendencies and movements in Europe; L’Esprit Nouveau was a magazine by the architect Le Corbusier (1887–1965) and the painter Amédée Ozenfant (1886–1966) published between 1920 and 1925 in Paris.

"In the summer of '70," synth pioneer Bob Moog recalls, "we were commissioned to build a quartet of live-performance #modular  synthesizers for a concert series to be held in the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. It was called 'Jazz in the Garden.' We built these four things out of standard modules, and we designed special preset boxes so that, instead of changing all the knobs and rerouting patch cords, you could just press a button and get a new preset."
  "After the concert, we wondered what the hell to do with these things. We let our representatives know that we wanted to sell them. One of them, a Londoner named Dag Fellner, told me that maybe he could sell one to a young musician by the name of Keith Emerson, because their new group was doing an album."

"Over time, as different musical styles began to inform one another to varying degrees, rock fusion came to encompass an ever-broadening range of sounds and approaches. Even within a single song or album, it became common for different sections to draw from disparate sources; early examples include Davis’ 1969 landmark record Bitches Brew, which features passages of searing electric guitar set against trance-like percussion grooves, and Zappa’s 1971 masterpiece Hot Rats, which skillfully weaves together elements of hard rock, jazz and psychedelia."

Shaftesbury shortscale bass, rough copy of a Fender

"Ahhhh... now this one brings back some memories. It's a shortscale Shaftesbury bass, roughly modelled on the original slab-bodied Fender Precision/Fender Telecaster bass, and I guess it's from the mid 1970s.

I remember back in the early 1980s when I was first getting into starting bands with my mates and doing a spot of home recording on the then-new Fostex X15 multitrack cassette recorder; one day a couple of my friends came round wanting to record a demo. They brought a couple of cheap guitars with them. I don't remember what the six string was, but the bass was one of these. It was bad. I remember thinking it how dreadful it was. It was boomy, as you'd expect from a short-scale bass but I've played many that were streets ahead of this. I don't think the flat wound strings helped (I've never liked them and never will). I can't explain exactly what was wrong with it, just that it felt bad and it played bad. It was a cheap and nasty bass and performed accordingly."

  Now I have done some new songs  and found many enjoying moments with it. It is a semi acoustic instrument so it has an empty body. This means it has a slow attack more like a cello. If you treat it right it gives you a new world.
