JODA, aka Jono Grant (Above & Beyond) and Darren Tate (DT8 Project, Jurgen Vries), release the final single taken from their self-titled debut album ‘JODA’, ‘Closer’.

‘Closer’ leans into pop with dark, electro undercurrents and features vocals from singer-songwriter Robyn Sherwell, who has previously been championed by Jo Whiley, Lauren Laverne and Huw Stevens across the BBC Radio network. Released on July 29, ‘Closer’ explores themes of loss, anguish and strength.

JODA is the new passion project from Jono Grant and Darren Tate. As dance music mainstays, the pair have always been in each other’s orbit. Jono Grant is one third of Above & Beyond, one of electronic music’s most influential acts, and Darren Tate is a producer and songwriter with 12 top 40 UK hits and three appearances on Top of the Pops.

The pair first unearthed their chemistry in 2003, when they produced “Let The Light Shine In” and “Nocturnal Creatures” together. They reconnected in 2019 when Tate returned to his trance roots and signed to Anjunabeats under his DT8 alias. Around the same time, Above & Beyond received an offer to score an environmental documentary The Last Glaciers, and teamed up with Tate to write it. The musical lightning struck immediately, and once the score was written the chemistry felt too good to lose. When lockdown hit, Tate and Grant entered a mutual creative bubble, and co-wrote a flurry of synth-wave dark-pop electronica. Enter JODA.

The fifth release on our freshly rebranded Silk Music imprint is a collaborative EP between two of our most accomplished artists: LTN and Vintage & Morelli. The former continues his relentless assault on dance music playlists worldwide, courtesy of his superlative monthly contributions to house, progressive, and trance. The latter is an equally versatile musician, who is also at the pinnacle of his craft, thanks to a variety of breathtaking trance and progressive releases since last autumn.

The lead track on the EP is "Us", which was initially previewed on LTN & Probity's "Arrival 02: Destination Indonesia" compilation. The track jets out of the gate with a furious bassline; soon thereafter, it introduces a cosmic lead theme, which is suspensefully teased via a variety of side piano melodies. In the main break, celestial pads unite with the gorgeous piano theme and anthemic chords.

The B-side, "Forbidden Fruits", finds the dynamic Indonesian and Serbian duo in familiar territory: a lush, chilled progressive house classic-in-the-making. A hypnotic vocal stutter punctuates a melodically blissful soundscape, which includes a variety of fluttering synths, a repeating 1/8 note chord progression, and, of course, an unforgettable piano theme. Kick back and enjoy the soulful and relaxing vibes of this one.

The stories behind the EP:

Will I Ever Find Love - I wrote this record after I developed quite strong feelings for someone, but the person did not have the same feelings back for me. I’m usually a very happy person, but this experience put me in quite a dark place at the time, which is when I wrote this track. Having never been in a serious relationship with anyone, this track represents the feeling of wondering if you will ever find the one.

Downpour - This record was written in October of 2016 soon after my graduation from Duke University when I was living with family east of San Francisco (in a town called Danville). To clear my mind, I would take walks on a mountain called Mt. Diablo, conveniently about 5-10 minutes away. I get far more inspired from foggy/rainy weather than when it is sunny, so I usually went on long hikes when a rainstorm would be forecasted. One morning I was hiking on the mountain, there was a massive rainstorm, and the fog and the clouds provided some gorgeous views. Later that afternoon, I started “Downpour” based on this experience.

Tassajara - This record was actually written a day or two after Downpour in October of 2016, still with the initial inspiration of fog and rain from my mountain hiking. At the time, I was writing music some 12-16 hours a day, with a single break in the middle of the day for lunch. The main road I would take to get lunch was called “Camino Tassajara.” One day on my way back from lunch, I was testing what is now “Tassajara” on my car’s sound system, when I glanced at a street sign, and the name fit perfectly.

Jody Wisternoff & James Grant release 'Blue Space', the third single off Jody's upcoming LP 'Nightwhisper'. 

Written the week following label festival Anjunadeep Explorations, 'Blue Space' was inspired by the bittersweet emotions of the beautiful surroundings and people, coupled with the passing away of Jody's father. On the track, James reminisces "We built the track around an initial musical idea we had together, then Jinadu's beautiful vocals came later and took the track in a more optimistic but still melancholic direction". 

Nightwhisper is out May 1.
