DJH ‘Unfinished Biznizz EP’ 

DJH was 15 when he wrote his first EP back in 1993. That EP became a near mythic release within the hardcore vinyl collecting circles with a price tag of over £700 on Discogs! Vinyl Fanatiks tracked down Danny and organised its re-release back in 2019, with the release selling out rapidly.

Now DJH is back, 27 years later, in the studio recording his first hardcore tracks since the glory years, inspired by the love and support shown by all who bought his repress. So if that was you, thank you for making him return to his first love. And what a return it is. Four incredibly authentic hardcore tracks, recorded in 2020, including his smasher from the ‘Hardcore Lockdown’ album – ‘Hold Tight’. Not only that, but he has revisited his seminal tune ‘Petruccio’ and has remixed it.

Amen Brother Biog:

In the early weeks of Lockdown, around the end of March 2020, DJH called me up with an idea.  “I was thinking, it would be nice to give the Vinyl Fanatiks supporters a free tune as a thank you for backing my repress and as a little gift during these difficult times, something to cheer people up” he said. I liked the idea, I liked it a lot and it got me thinking; ‘Why don’t I approach all the artists I have worked with over the past 18 months and see if they too feel like getting into the studio and making a new tune, but for it to sound like it was made in the early 90s?’ A few phone calls and emails were made and within a week I had 14 producers and groups going into the studio, each writing a fresh track. The free album ‘Hardcore Lockdown’ was created and subsequently released in May 2020. I had no idea it would be as successful as it was, with over 5000 downloads in a few weeks, and many messages that it would be great if these tracks would appear on vinyl. Now that was music to my ears and it again got me thinking!

Rather than release the project as a triple vinyl piece, I thought it would be a great opportunity to get each artist and group to write an EP, which would include their track from the album, and to release these EPs on vinyl as well as digital. But I felt it wouldn’t be right for these to come out on Vinyl Fanatiks as it would be too confusing. Vinyl Fanatiks is a repress label; these were brand new tunes, made by the original wizards of the scene. I needed a new label! For the past year I had been mulling over starting a new label and had already come up with the name and the branding. I just didn’t have a direction for it yet. But now I did… Amen Brother was born.

Amen Brother is a label that continues the vibes of the early 90’s but comes correct with fresh music. The music needs to feel like it was made back in the day - it needs to have that connection, whether written by an original artist from that era, or a remix of music from that era. But with the bar being raised so high by Vinyl Fanatiks, I needed to be sure that Amen Brother continued with that level of quality, from the authenticity of the music, to the high levels of presentation that my customers expect from us.

The second release on Amen Brother sees the return of another old school legend that only released one EP and vanished for the next 28 years! Lee X-Plode put out a self-funded EP in 1992 on a white label that became highly sort after in the vinyl collecting world, with copies changing hands for up to £250! Vinyl Fanatiks were lucky enough to be blessed with his permission to re-release this EP, which flew off the shelves.

Lee just loves the early 90’s rave scene and is an avid collector of any rave footage from this era. He is so tuned in to this period of music that when he started producing again in 2020, his tracks sounded like they had all been made back then, 100% authentic with 100% vibes. So when we approached Lee about writing an EP for our newly-founded Amen Brother label, he jumped at the chance and gave us four amazing anthems. This EP includes his track ‘Shock Out’ from the ‘Hardcore Lockdown’ album as well as an incredible revamp of his reggae tinged classic ‘Watch This Go’ which was on his one and only release back in 1992.

One of my longest quests in regards to organising a repress was tracking down Utomica. I had received many messages about trying to sort out that release by fans of the record who would direct message me. I was determined to make it happen and played the waiting game. But as the saying states ‘patience is a virtue’ and this was most certainly the case as not only was Martin a member of Utomica, he was also part of Law & Auder. And Law & Auder have a near mythical status within the 90’s jungle collector’s circles. Saying that, Utomica was also near mythical as well! But Law & Auder would always appear in any of the ‘Top 10 most collectable Jungle records’ lists that would be done by Discogs or DJ Magazine and the like. It’s like Martin has the Midas touch. But for a guy that has made such an impact on the hardcore and jungle scenes, he hasn’t got a huge ego, he is the total opposite. He is mild mannered, unassuming and very laid back. It’s always a pleasure to chat with Martin and today was even more pleasurable as he brought along his old mate, the studio maestro and another part of the Law & Auder team, Phil Dickson-Earle. Today I was given a schooling.

Very similar to how Utomica came about, Law & Auder formed through the same mutual friend, a guy called Bobbi Style, from The Love Junkies, who was signed to Pro-One Records, the same label that Martin was signed to as Utomica, run by the other half of Utomica, David Salvi. Bobbi was central to both musical partnerships. “I went up to Bobbi’s to buy a bit of kit” Phil explains “and I ended up leaving as his manager! I was already working with a guy called Lawrence Elliott-Potter as part of Friends, Lovers and Family and was signed to Rising High Records. But to be honest, I wasn’t that interested in the project, it was more Lawrence’s thing. But on our trips to Rising High, I somehow ended up as the manager of Caspar Pound, otherwise known as The Hypnotist. Lawrence was engineering for Caspar for a while but moved on after launching his own label Lush Recordings and started producing trance. Upon his departure, I then became Caspar’s engineer. I stayed loyal to the label whilst things took a turn for the worse and it went into administration. There was only myself, Caspar and Joe Trawker, a guy that lived at the end of Westbourne Mews that heard our music and wandered in, left by this point and we kept it going the best we could but eventually I had to depart to pursue my own dreams”.

Phil continues “Helping to run Rising High I became good friends with lots of the artists, so when the label started slowing down due to legal reasons, I wanted to start my own label. And in 1995 Law & Auder Records was formed and a few of the Rising High acts supported me, including Luke Vibert who I was good friends with. But prior to that, there was Law & Auder the group which was signed to David’s Pro-One Records and myself, Lawrence and Martin released two projects on the label; ‘Num Yo Ho’ and ‘We Run Tings’, back in 1993. Though ‘Num Yo Ho’ was actually started in 1991! By the time our EP’s came out on Pro-One Records, the jungle scene was in full flow. But at the time of writing the music I didn’t know there was a scene called jungle! I was just experimenting. My studio was based in Vauxhall, South London at this time and Mendoza Records would send all their artists over to mine to record. It’s though these sessions that my musical direction was being influenced, subliminally. Though before I moved to Vauxhall, my studio was up in Hoxton, a home studio set up that I put together around 1989-1990. Actually, when I moved out of my Hoxton studio, Martin moved in!”

The label was established in 2018 as a means to release the back catalogue of renowned Jungle Techno label Underdog Recordings, which ran from 1993-1995. It quickly expanded from beyond the original goal and now reissues sought after, rare and classic records from the Jungle, Rave, Bleep House, Techno and Jungle Techno genres.

The Vinyl Fanatiks aim is to track down and work with the original artists from the early 1990’s, to reissue their music on vinyl only, and to support the record hunters and vinyl diggers from around the world with quality pressings and superb mastering; a way to show respect and share the story of those that created these incredible records.

The vision is not to focus on the obvious artists of that time but to dig a little deeper and find those that came and went but their legacy still holds true to this day. Some of these producers only released one record and vanished soon after but their music still resonates into the 21st century, accumulating new audiences across the globe, far beyond the catchment of the UK pirate radios and muddy fields of 25 years ago. What happened to these artists? Its Vinyl Fanatik’s mission to find out!

Each record captures a moment in time, a vibe that was true and innocent from a period when music was far more synonymous with rebellion and anarchy than today’s finely polished productions and conformist club pop. This music itself bred on the outskirts of society, fuelled by the passion of the rave, its lineage stemming from the Acid House era of 1988. Often produced on minimal equipment, with minimal skills and knowledge, its audio blueprint transcends to new generations, a rawness that no expensive audio plug in could ever create in this present day.

Vinyl Fanatiks wants to pay homage to these young producers who forged the foundations of the multi-million pound EDM scene we have now. Each of these artists has their own tale to tell, their own memories to share. Limited by their own geographical status within the UK, they somehow still all managed to connect and influence each other, years before the internet, mobile phones and social media that we have today. But the music knew no limits and had no boundaries, transcending generations to this day.
