Loved this set and glad I got round to digging the tape out. Fergus always played hard trance where others stuck with the happy hardcore sound of the moment. Consequently, he was the only DJ at Pleasuredome to not play a single tune others had played ten times before him on the same night. Respect for that.  This set pretty much got me in to trance, hence the upload. Big ups!

Back in 1992 I moved to Bournemouth to go to Art College. I knew a few people, one of those being John Issacs AKA DJ Junk. I use to go over his house in the evenings and listen to music and hang out with the rest of the Second To None Breakers, most I had known since 1987/1988. One evening John took me over to a house in Bournemouth where there was a studio. I always remembered that evening but had no idea who the guy I had met was, it was just one of those random nights and I was always meeting new people. I knew this person was a rated producer signed to a big label. It wasn’t until I was signed to Moving Shadow myself and was chatting to Rob Playford around 1996 that he told me about a chap called Rog from a group called Tone Def, based in Bournemouth, who he use to work with on tunes back in the early years of the label. Thats when it clicked who that guy I met all those years earlier actually was! Rog Mogale from the group Tone Def, who made one of my all time anthems from my teens when I was out raving every weekend as a pony-tailed punter. That tune is ‘Big Love’ and it still makes the hairs on my arms stand on end (which it is as I write this, listening to it as I type!) Takes me right back to 1992 standing in a field, swaying, throwing shapes whilst my mud covered feet are going ten to the dozen!!!

It was only earlier this year that I managed to track down Rog again and after a bit of a chat (he remembers me going round his house, even though at the time I was just some random tagging along with John!) Rog mentioned that he thought that he had some old DAT tapes and 1/4″ reel to reel tapes with some music on that they wrote while on Moving Shadow but they never submitted to the label and subsequently it had been filed away, never to be heard of again. He didnt know where they were or even what the tracks on those tapes were like, but there was a small glimmer of hope that something could come to fruition! The lost Shadow Tapes!

A few long weeks went by and the occasional email from Bournemouth over to Gran Canaria (Rog’s present location) and back again before I got the email that I was hoping for. The DAT tapes had been found and Rog had gone through them and about 8 unreleased tracks were discovered! Not only that but Rog had remembered about some other tunes they had done which he had files for and would soon be collecting the Akai disks on his next trip back to Bournemouth! So, this is just the start of a few releases by Tone Def on Vinyl Fanatiks. The Bournemouth Moving Shadow family dropping megabombs!

Since their last release together as Tone Def on Moving Shadow back in 1992 Rog went on to set up the hugely successful audio company Void Acoustics, who supply the best speakers on the market to clubs, festivals and live venues. He now lives in Gran Canaria and is still producing in his rather incredible studio and enjoying the benefits of running a successful business. But he also still does the occasional gig as Tone Def alongside Paul Smith (weirdly enough whose brother I use to work with when I was a Countryside Ranger in Dorset!) though the location of the third member, Tony Davies, is presently not known, though the guys have tried to track him down over the years and would love to hear from him.

It doesn't appear anywhere else online (I don't think) and while it's a bit sketchy on 'permission' to upload, it's a shame to have this beauty collecting dust, forgotten in the attic. A bit of 21st century mastering has been applied, to polish a bit of brightness to it too.

Utomica ‘Rok A Bye’ – its one of those holy grails that people were always asking me for. “It would be great if you could make this one happen” the emails and messages would say, and these messages were regular, not just from one super keen person, but from many people. It became a quest for me to track down the creators of this 12″ and a bloody long quest it turned out to be. But good things do come to those that wait and this is one of those times that patience paid off.

So its a Sunday night, February 2020 and three middle aged men are trying to work out how to do a 3-way Whatsapp call. Well, its not the technological side of it all that’s the struggle, all 3 are aufait with that side of things, its getting us all free at the same time to make it happen! Previous arranged dates had been and gone. Its not like a quick 10 minute call, these interviews are over an hour, sometimes two hours, as we drill down into how things came about, so for everyone to have that much time set aside from the family and other responsibilities takes some organising… and for Whatsapp to be able to retain the channels open, well, that’s just pot luck. The drop outs were frequent, but the perseverance was second to none… and so we chatted.

I have Martin Lee-Stephenson and David Salvi both on the phone at once, both of the members of Utomica and artists on the Pro-One label through various guises. My first question ‘Where did the name come from?’ “It was a bit improvised, we needed a new name for a more jungle sounding project, we were always wanting to stay ahead of the curve and try new musical styles. At the time I was into weird and wonderful stuff”. Martin kicks things off, adding “We were working on weird physics names at the time and we felt that we were sound scientists”. “We would have endless conversations about science and synths and always wanted to stay in touch with the musical advent garde” David continues “So the name Utomica just sounded right for this new project”.

Martin (who was living just behind the soon to be opened Blue Note in Hoxton – “Law and Auder and the Rising High Studios were a five minute walk from my flat. Howie B lived two doors away and Jarvis Cocker was upstairs for a while!) is from a rock background but caught onto the acid house scene that was kicking off in London in the late 80’s and decided that was where he wanted to go musically. David was more from the soul and jazz scenes that London had to offer and was already moving around in the early hardcore scene – “My main connection to the scene was through De Underground Records/Reel to Reel Productions (John Aymer/Flex/Mike) who I met when Hopa recommended me for some engineering work, they then approached me to engineer a remix of “We Are E”. It was in fact through these guys that I met Mike (Michael Whittaker) who had originally formed Pro One. We met, got on brilliantly and within a few days decided to combine forces and keep the label name Pro One. This was in late 1991. The studio was then reformed and renamed as Pro One Recordings”.

They first linked together in 1992 as they both had a mutual friends, but the main linchpin was a guy called Bobbi Style who was a singer and had a band called The Love Junkies, signed to Pro One for an album. Bobbi’s Dynamic Studios was based in Hoxton and David had been drafted in to engineer the project whilst Martin had been asked to play bass guitar and during the downtime, David and Martin bonded over their mutual love of the growing hardcore scene. It was from this chance encounter that they decided to start making music together, their first collaboration being this release, ‘Rok-A-Bye’. Utomica had been born.

“Things were very smoky back then” Rennie Pilgrem tells me as we get stuck into our chat. “We would down tools if we were likely to run low. Everything would stop until we managed to get some more weed. We didn’t work without it! The more we all smoked, the louder the bass would get. ‘Check Out The Bass Bass’ was the most extreme one we did. We mixed that one down while heavily stoned, adding more and more bass the more we smoked. To top it off we then went to Jah Tubby’s Studios to get it mastered and cut, where even more bass was added! That one was a bass overload!”

Rhythm Section were one of my favourite groups from the early 1990’s. They made tunes that I loved. Heavy, catchy, rave infested anthems. I remember in 1999 we as Aquasky were asked to play the opening night of Fabric and before we went on, the DJ before us was Rennie Pilgrem. We were all very excited to meet him and I think I may have bent his ear a bit too much about his rave days as I suddenly reverted to my 17 year old self, watching them from the crowd, in awe. Our paths crossed often during the heady days of the breakbeat scene in the early noughties. We even got to remix Rhythm Section under our Black Noise moniker and in turn Rennie remixed one of our tunes that we did with the Ragga Twins. 

Back in November 2003 I had been booked to play a rave called Vinyl Touch at Electrowerks and the DJ before me was Ellis Dee! Again, I was super excited to meet another of my teenage heroes. Ellis Dee, alongside DJ Ratty were my all-time favourite DJs from the rave era and I use to have their mixtapes on in my car all the time as well as booming out of my bedroom in a small village in the New Forest, much to my parents dismay and bafflement! Myself and Ellis Dee have worked together releasing his anthems from back in the day on Vinyl Fanatiks for the past year, so when Roy asked me if I would be interested in releasing any Rhythm Section records I didn’t even need to contemplate it. I bit his hand off! YES!!!!!!!!!

Rennie continues the conversation “In 2019 Roy (Ellis Dee) was telling us that he had been repressing his early music and that there was a market for unreleased music as well. So we thought ‘Let’s check our DAT tapes and see what we can find’. We all travelled down to Nick’s studio in Brighton and went through them, finding the unreleased version of ‘Perfect Love’ as well as samples and the vocal to one of the last tunes we ever did together; ‘Rhythm Takes Control’. We thought it would be nice to revisit that track and make a version of it which was more like the traditional Rhythm Section releases. When we wrote that track originally in 1993 all of us had become disinterested in the scene. At this time we weren’t sure as a band what we were into. We were experimenting with house. We didn’t like where the tempo was going in the rave scene, anything above 140BPM felt wrong. It was the end of the rave era and we never got to make a rave version of it back then. So for us to come together again after all these years and make a refix of it in a traditional 1991 Rhythm Section style was great fun”.

The second release on Amen Brother sees the return of another old school legend that only released one EP and vanished for the next 28 years! Lee X-Plode put out a self-funded EP in 1992 on a white label that became highly sort after in the vinyl collecting world, with copies changing hands for up to £250! Vinyl Fanatiks were lucky enough to be blessed with his permission to re-release this EP, which flew off the shelves.

Lee just loves the early 90’s rave scene and is an avid collector of any rave footage from this era. He is so tuned in to this period of music that when he started producing again in 2020, his tracks sounded like they had all been made back then, 100% authentic with 100% vibes. So when we approached Lee about writing an EP for our newly-founded Amen Brother label, he jumped at the chance and gave us four amazing anthems. This EP includes his track ‘Shock Out’ from the ‘Hardcore Lockdown’ album as well as an incredible revamp of his reggae tinged classic ‘Watch This Go’ which was on his one and only release back in 1992.

Amen Brother biog:

In the early weeks of Lockdown, around the end of March 2020, DJH called me up with an idea.  “I was thinking, it would be nice to give the Vinyl Fanatiks supporters a free tune as a thank you for backing my repress and as a little gift during these difficult times, something to cheer people up” he said. I liked the idea, I liked it a lot and it got me thinking; ‘Why don’t I approach all the artists I have worked with over the past 18 months and see if they too feel like getting into the studio and making a new tune, but for it to sound like it was made in the early 90s?’ A few phone calls and emails were made and within a week I had 14 producers and groups going into the studio, each writing a fresh track. The free album ‘Hardcore Lockdown’ was created and subsequently released in May 2020. I had no idea it would be as successful as it was, with over 5000 downloads in a few weeks, and many messages that it would be great if these tracks would appear on vinyl. Now that was music to my ears and it again got me thinking!

Rather than release the project as a triple vinyl piece, I thought it would be a great opportunity to get each artist and group to write an EP, which would include their track from the album, and to release these EPs on vinyl as well as digital. But I felt it wouldn’t be right for these to come out on Vinyl Fanatiks as it would be too confusing. Vinyl Fanatiks is a repress label; these were brand new tunes, made by the original wizards of the scene. I needed a new label! For the past year I had been mulling over starting a new label and had already come up with the name and the branding. I just didn’t have a direction for it yet. But now I did… Amen Brother was born.

Amen Brother is a label that continues the vibes of the early 90’s but comes correct with fresh music. The music needs to feel like it was made back in the day - it needs to have that connection, whether written by an original artist from that era, or a remix of music from that era. But with the bar being raised so high by Vinyl Fanatiks, I needed to be sure that Amen Brother continued with that level of quality, from the authenticity of the music, to the high levels of presentation that my customers expect from us.

2. X-Plode 'Rock The House' - AB-VFS002 - 192mp3 clip

The label was established in 2018 as a means to release the back catalogue of renowned Jungle Techno label Underdog Recordings, which ran from 1993-1995. It quickly expanded from beyond the original goal and now reissues sought after, rare and classic records from the Jungle, Rave, Bleep House, Techno and Jungle Techno genres.

The Vinyl Fanatiks aim is to track down and work with the original artists from the early 1990’s, to reissue their music on vinyl only, and to support the record hunters and vinyl diggers from around the world with quality pressings and superb mastering; a way to show respect and share the story of those that created these incredible records.

The vision is not to focus on the obvious artists of that time but to dig a little deeper and find those that came and went but their legacy still holds true to this day. Some of these producers only released one record and vanished soon after but their music still resonates into the 21st century, accumulating new audiences across the globe, far beyond the catchment of the UK pirate radios and muddy fields of 25 years ago. What happened to these artists? Its Vinyl Fanatik’s mission to find out!

Each record captures a moment in time, a vibe that was true and innocent from a period when music was far more synonymous with rebellion and anarchy than today’s finely polished productions and conformist club pop. This music itself bred on the outskirts of society, fuelled by the passion of the rave, its lineage stemming from the Acid House era of 1988. Often produced on minimal equipment, with minimal skills and knowledge, its audio blueprint transcends to new generations, a rawness that no expensive audio plug in could ever create in this present day.

Vinyl Fanatiks wants to pay homage to these young producers who forged the foundations of the multi-million pound EDM scene we have now. Each of these artists has their own tale to tell, their own memories to share. Limited by their own geographical status within the UK, they somehow still all managed to connect and influence each other, years before the internet, mobile phones and social media that we have today. But the music knew no limits and had no boundaries, transcending generations to this day.
