Outsiders: Offen Music w/ Ex Ponto @ Kiosk Radio 01.11.2022

This is a conceptual EP I made a while back, constructed entirely out of field recorded / sampled material I captured from a single geographic location. During the recording and production process I employed techniques from areas such as musique concrète (see definition below), to ultimately create a cyclical narrative-led EP that explores the natural cycles of the earth: from birth / creation, to decay / decomposition.

The Bridge

Purelink have been described more than once as an "ambient boy band." (They themselves say "jam band.") It's not meant dismissively—the American trio purposefully mean to function as a band, even if their main instruments are laptops. Ambient might not quite cut it as a descriptor, though. The group's music crosses eras and scenes, touching on the late '90s clicks & cuts boom as well as the billowy ambient techno put out by labels like 3XL, West Mineral Ltd. and NAFF. 

Their most recent LP, Signs, released on enigmatic imprint Peak Oil (and one of our favourite albums of 2023), is especially impressive, made of stuttering rhythms and glassy textures. In other words, it's ambient-not-ambient. While members Concave Reflection, kindtree and Millia have all made excellent music on their own, something special happens when they come together.

Purelink's RA Podcast is another stellar contribution to our post-New Year's tradition, where we highlight a more laid-back sound to soothe weary minds and frazzled brain cells after the heavy holiday celebrations. This is 90-plus minutes of intricately textured downtempo, dub techno and even UK garage, all cut through with a floaty, almost drowsy quality, with plenty of exclusives and unreleased cuts from the likes of Nick León, James K, Downstairs J and more. It highlights Purelink's position as a bridger of worlds, sounds and tempos.

I'm trying to post more consistently now and I think the way to do that is for me focus on individual tracks rather than grand EPs. 

I'm thinking I might release a compilation mixtape soon though to get around this, so I can focus on standalone tracks but still put out some sort of project. 

Who knows... maybe some type of 'assorted / selected works' thing coming soon x

The Roads Between

Anthems For Life is the culmination of years of practicing. It carries all of the places and people I’ve performed to and with. Evidently, I find releasing music hard. Put simply, turning music into something permanent feels confusing. Isolating songs doesn’t make sense as they all build a larger narrative when they are humming together. 

Maybe it’s the feeling of needing to labour over something to make it ‘good enough’ is the challenging part. I like mistakes in music, when things aren’t completely right. I like that when I perform its impermanent and the audience gets all of me. Performing live inevitably captures my vulnerability as I am physically in practice, and I often make mistakes. What I like is that the audience is seeing me and my attempts to converse with them through sound and raw emotion. 

I wanted to create work that captures how I play. When a friend listened to shard mentality in full (it exists), they commented on how it doesn’t sound like me, as it isn’t alive. It doesn’t capture that I play best when I’m performing and am forced to build connection between things in real time. 

The past few months I’ve been intentionally not recording any sets, practices and sometimes compositions. I’ve tried not to play for an outcome but to engage with how I’m growing and learning about my own language and how I’m getting that across to people. Being able to build narratives is important to me. Being able to adequately articulate my emotions so others can feel them is important to me. 

Making long form tracks is how I understand my music. Everything needs to be speaking to each other, and often repeating for it to make sense. This track (album) is everything that shard mentality couldn’t be on its own. Most of the tracks have been made since that time. Some is salvaged but not much. 

This is a live recording I made a few weeks ago. I stayed up making some small changes but the track is far from polished from an industry standpoint. Which is something I’m ok with. Reminding myself that how we make and what our music sounds like reflects who we are and where we come from. Most of my favourite artists are povo bedroom producers who’s bass would blow out any clubs speakers. It isn’t about how clean something sounds but what emotion and stories it contains inside of it. 

Realising how I wanna share my work and that thats a choice has been a consolation. And being able to share these stories with people who feel something for them means the world to me. I’m really proud of this work, and continuing to find my feet within a cut throat scene. 

There is nothing I care about more than making genuine connections to people through sound. It is how I practice my moral understandings of the world through the eyes of my family, which builds my identity. It is a gift to share and to receive. And I will spend the rest of my life forging these paths and portals that create connection.
