Mon (The Dirt Caves Off)

I just found out about Spitfire Audio's VST collaboration with BBC Symphony Orchestra, and ohhh what a gift!! So many rich textures and sounds, and they're all free for creators to use. :)

I started this project by playing around with drum sounds in Spitfire Audio's LABS collection, then layering in cellos and strings and brass via BBCSO. I didn't know what direction to take the piece, but eventually I had this image of an Odyssean epic playing in my head, with great nordic ships and journeying through stretching taigas. The Tundra Atmos LABS pack provided such amazing sounds, like the crashing waves and the icy synth pads! Spitfire's Tundra Atmos sounds, originating from the lands and waters of the Northen hemisphere, heavily reinforced that vision in my mind. I struggled to land on a satisfying chord progression at first, but once I knew the feeling that I wanted to capture, everything else fell into place. I just kept tinkering with the instrumentation, adding layer after layer of sounds. Funnily, the introduction went through many iterations. At first I went back and forth between the original cello chords, and then a thumping bass rhythm, and then just the waves. And then when I listened to the waves, I knew that I wanted to honor that feeling of nature, of the shore. The idea of the piccolo melody emerged so easily after that, wind instruments to emulate birdsong and wind! 

Such a joy to play with these tools from Spitfire Audio and BBC Orchestra. AND they're FREE! Much much gratitude. Check them out if you haven't already!

[ALBUM ARTWORK] captured two years ago, with family, at Antelope Island of the Great Salt Lake on Shoshone lands. I didn't make this piece with Antelope Island in mind, but when I picture the journey on the shore, this image resonates. It reminds me of majesty to be witnessed, kinship to be forged, wisdom to be unearthed. May we listen deeply to the land, so that we may bring people and planet into right relationship.
