PROGRAM NOTES & BIO:
Max Vinetz explores lyricism and texture, drawing inspiration from tradition and non-vernacular. He has received recognition and awards for performance and composition from ASCAP, BMI, Donald Sinta Quartet, Tesla Quartet, KLK New Music, Yale University, the Reno Jazz Festival and the CMEA Jazz Festival. At Yale, Max won the Abraham Beekman Cox Prize awarded to the “most promising and gifted composer” in the junior class, and was also awarded the Lewis P. Curtin Fellowship, the Tristan Perloth Prize, and the R.J.R. Cohen Fellowship for Musical Performance.

Max’s works and have been performed and read by the Lemberg Sinfonietta, DeCoda, Phoenix Quartet, Albatross Duo, New York Youth Symphony, Brevard Sinfonia, Yale Undergraduate Chamber Orchestra, Icarus Duo, and the Yale Symphony Orchestra among others. Next year, Max will finish his undergraduate studies in Music at Yale, where he studies composition with Kathryn Alexander.

PROGRAM NOTES & BIO:
I if I provides ground for an exploration of the differences in our interpretation of meaning and expression in acoustic and electronic sounds. Here are a few related questions: Is a recording merely an image of a past sound? Is an amplified sound less ‘real’ if the speaker is separated from the instrument? If we interpret a sound as ‘artificial,’ do we take it less seriously? Is there some space between ‘real’ and ‘artificial’?

Originally from Utica, NY, Jacob Sachs-Mishalanie is a Brooklyn based composer, songwriter, electronic musician, drummer, and teacher. His recent research and musical projects focus on ideas about recording and sampling, recursion, and algorithmic composition. This has taken shape in many forms, including acoustic & electroacoustic concert pieces, a stop motion music video & EP released by Newlywed Records, minimal chamber-pop, improvised ambient electronics, and performances pieces like “Counterpoint for Two Isolated Drumsets” and “Piece for Eight Microcassette Recorders.” Jacob is currently a PhD candidate in composition at the CUNY Graduate Center, and previously studied at SUNY Purchase. His primary teachers have been Jason Eckardt, Jeff Nichols, Suzanne Farrin, Du Yun, and Huang Ruo. As a teaching fellow and adjunct, he teaches Music Theory & Technology at Brooklyn College, and will be teaching Critical Thinking at LaGuardia CC through the CUNY Humanities Alliance beginning in Fall 2017.

Transparent and delicate. These are the two things I had in mind when writing Glass.

Adam Kennaugh’s music investigates the physical energies required to produce a sound by focusing on a narrow scope of the sounds as an individualized entity. Through this, his music seeks to combine the visual and aural aspects of a musical performance to create an all-encompassing experience for the listener that is both contemplative and delicate, yet sharp and aggressive.He is currently pursuing a M.M. at Bowling Green State University (studying with Mikel Kuehn), received a B.M. from Montclair State University (Marcos Balter, Elizabeth Brown, Ting Ho), and an A.A. from the County College of Morris (Jose Bevia).

PROGRAM NOTES & BIO:
Time Motor is inspired by the concept of time perception, which refers to the subjective experience of time. Time could be frozen, or could pass by very quickly—it all depends on the listener’s perception.

As an aspiring composer, violinist, and tenor, Yip Ho Kwen Austin is one of the most active musicians from the new generation of contemporary music and music performances in Hong Kong. Having received his Bachelor of Arts (Music) degree at the University of California, Berkeley with a “high distinction in general scholarship” and his Master of Philosophy (Music Composition) degree at the University of Hong Kong, Yip is currently a PhD (Music Composition) candidate at the University of Hong Kong under the supervision of Dr. Joshua Chan with the support from the University Postgraduate Fellowship.

Yip’s works have been performed by both internationally and locally renowned ensembles and performers, to name a few, the Ensemble Modern (Germany), Ensemble Duo Plus (Germany), Opus Two (US), Vox Humana (Japan) and Hong Kong New Music Ensemble. Yip’s works have recently been performed in Intimacy of Creativity, Le French May, Hong Kong Arts Festival, HellHOT! New Music Festival, 6×6 Media Arts Events (US), ISCM Sydney (Australia), ACL Japan (Tokyo, Japan), Yogyakarta Contemporary Music Festival (Indonesia), Shanghai Conservatory of Music New Music Week etc. Yip is the holder of James Kitagawa Memorial Music Scholarship, Regents’ and Chancellor’s Scholarship, Henry Holbrook Scholarship, James King Scholarship, Eisner Prize, Milton C. Witzel Memorial Prize, University Postgraduate Studentship and Rayson Huang Scholarship.

PROGRAM NOTES & BIO:
The Constant Search for Something Else was originally realized as an Alto Saxophone Trio in a rough sketch. The sketch did not work as planned and was scrapped for a later purpose. The switch of the instrumentation changed the originally written music but the formal ideas were still in place. The piece is built on an amorphous and searching tendency which finally comes to a resting place. This formal tendency grows from itself and attempts to not reflect. Duration: 11 min.

Andrew Koss is a New York City based composer and saxophonist. His work reflects a passion for exploring unique timbre and harmony in an engaging and approachable context. He also is influenced by funk and jazz idioms. His music has been performed at the International Saxophone Symposium in Fairfax, VA and the 2017 National Trumpet Competition in Denver, CO. As a saxophonist, Andrew is an active performer and advocate of new music. He has studied under Keith Young and Paul Cohen. Andrew holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Theory and Composition from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. At IUP he studied Composition under David Martynuik and John Levey. Andrew is now pursuing a Master’s Degree in Theory and Composition at New York University, studying under Robert Honstein.

"Utopia" by Richard Drehoff

2015: The debut of the Composition Program at the Valencia International Performance Academy will showcase the music of emerging and established composers and offer qualified composition program participants the opportunity to work with VIPA Composition Program faculty members and featured guest composers Stefano Gervasoni and Carlos Sanchez-Gutierrez in lessons, workshops and masterclasses. In addition, participants will have the opportunity to work with and have one piece performed by our resident performers at one of the VIPA concerts. Resident ensembles include critically-acclaimed NOMOS Ensemble, Eastman BROADBAND Ensemble, NASduo (clarinet+percussion), Alxarq Percussion Trio. VIPA Comp will also offer workshops on contemporary instrumental techniques and notation, orchestration, and career orientation. The program will take place within the state-of-the-art facilities of the Conservatorio Superior de Música Joaquín Rodrigo in the beautiful city of Valencia, Spain. Boasting a breathtaking coastline, a vibrant cultural life and world-class cuisine, Valencia is one of the most sought-after summer destinations in Europe.
