Since he first came into contact with the labels "Kompakt" and "Pampa" about 15 years ago, the variation of abstract techno and house music has captivated him and has never let him go. 

In the beginning only as a music consumer, dancer & blogger, he developed a passion for dj'ing in 2009. He puts a lot of emphasis on a mixture of nebulous wafting ambient and dark surfaces, along with rich and clear bass drums, clicking hi-hats, as well as dignified rhythm and tempo changes including some goosebumps moments.

Sometimes deep, sometimes rave, but still dark driving.

He is also the curator of the incredible @afterhour-sounds , where he showcases some of the finest underground music available.

3 QUESTIONS to PHILIPP FEIN:

Q: Let's get into the mood for your mix. A lot of love and light from the past - how did these tracks influence your later doings?

A: With the selection of tracks I tried to trace a little bit the last 40 years in which I have more or less actively listened to music. From the childhood hits of the 1980s that were on the radio, to Hip Hop and Breakbeats, to House and the varieties of electronic music with a straight beat: I've always tried to play as wide a spectrum as possible of awesome music that I personally like and hope I've succeeded with this mix. Nevertheless, it's also perfectly clear that there are certainly dozens of other tracks that have influenced me and that don't appear in this mix. I have also left out (most of) the usual suspects of classic tracks.  

Q: How would you reflect the past 2 years of pandemic for yourself?

A: The last two years of the pandemic have been really educational and I've found that despite the adverse circumstances for DJs and artists, I've turned the corner quite well. We had already founded our new booking agency called &&booking before the outbreak and had to wait a long time with the announcement until it made sense from our point of view to present such a venture again. And fortunately, our people were not among those who flew to Tanzania, India and Mexico anyway. My label Feines Tier certainly helped me get through the time. I simply released more music and thus I didn't get bored during the pandemic. Lucky me I was able to do this!

Q: Which future projects are on the way - what are you currently working on?

A: In the near future, of course, new great records will appear on Feines Tier, which one or the other perhaps would not expect. In addition to the booking agency, the label and our own events, I have also founded a sustainable startup with my brother, which is also very exciting and represents a nice antipole to the entertainment world: We grow cress and microgreens year-round for Cologne's top gastronomy.

as usual. is a Berlin-based imprint for electronic music, which basically began as a weekly event series in 2013. Four years later, the music label as usual.music was launched and concentrates on releasing a deeply groovin' cutting-edge sound in various facets, delivered by some fabulous artists of the labels surrounding, as well as several other renowned acts with a contemporary sense for underground and club music.

as usual.music is focused on Techhouse and Minimal, with influences of multiform ranges in Techno and House music, such as Deeptech/Deephouse. Deeply groovin' cutting-edge sounds and crispy tight rhythms are basic to what makes it shakin' or bangin' – consequently, the demanding nature of our music is fundamentally made for having maximum aesthetics to please the dancefloors. With no fear to break the rules at some point. It's represented by some of the most interesting artists in the underground music and club scene. We love to connect diverse aspects of creativity to having an intense excitement in projects and concepts. The result is a highly inspiring and perceptive state of quality dance music. Taking the challenge of the ongoing evolution in contemporary music industries and feeling the impulses of tomorrow are implanted genes of our beings.

INTERVIEW:
1. Wie lange legst du nun schon auf und wie hast du es gelernt?

Jini: Wie so viele, hab auch ich im Coronawinter 2020 beschlossen mit dem schrottigen alten Controller eines Freundes und einer open-source Software in die Tiefen der Auflegekunst einzutauchen. Damals hab ich den Controller noch an meinen Bluetooth-Speaker angeschlossen und hauptsächlich free downloads auf Soundcloud gediggt. Wenig später hat es mir so Bock gemacht Mucke und Genres zu entdecken, sie im Aufbau zu verstehen, mich in die Technik reinzufuchsen, dass ich endlich mein eigenes Equipment plus Software, viele viele Tracks für viel Geld und Monitorboxen gekauft hab. Beigebracht hab ich mir das meiste selbst. Inspiriert wurde ich zu allem von meiner @diskoflausch Crew.

2. Gibt es ein bestimmtes Event oder Moment an das/den du dich gern zurück erinnerst? 

J: Unsere erste Kollektiv-Party im Beate Uwe ein paar Tage vorm Tanzverbot in Berlin. Irgendwann als man während der Pandemie tanzen durfte, aber dann eben auch nicht mehr. Denn es war mein erster Gig wo vor mir nicht nur Freund:innen tanzten, sondern so viele andere Gesichter. Der Dancefloor war komplett voll und wir haben zusammen sowas schönes kreiert. Das will ich immer wieder machen.

3. Was wünscht du dir, sollte in der Clubszene .anders laufen?

J: Ich wünsche mir die Umsetzung von politischen feministischen Ansprüchen in Partypraxis. Das umfasst nicht nur die Sichtbarkeit von FLINTA*s zu erhöhen, sondern vor allem neue Praktiken und Umgangsweisen in der Orga/Planung, im Booking, an der Tür umzusetzen. Dazu gehört ein feministisches Mindset des Clubpersonals, faire Bezahlung etc. Awareness darf kein plakatives Konzept bleiben, sondern sollte in allen Bereichen so gut wie möglich praktiziert werden. Dazu gehört nicht nur ein Awarenessteam bei Partys, sondern eine allumfassende Struktur. Und generell: mehr FLINTA*s und Newcomer:innen to the front.  

4. Wie würdest du deinen Sound beschreiben?

J: Sehr abwechslungsreich. Ich liebe Downtempo, aber eben auch House und Disko. Ich bin genrefluid. Ich lasse mich gern überraschen und habe auch eine kleine Schwäche für Acid, Trance und Breaks. Ich sehe es als Teil meiner musikalischen Entwicklung. Hört für euch selbst!

5. Was liegt dir neben dem Auflegen noch sehr am Herzen? 

J: Politik in jeglicher Form. Jede Politik fördert Imbalancen. Es gehört zu meiner Alltagspraxis so gut wie möglich informiert zu bleiben und mich gegen Diskriminierungen, Ausbeutungsverhältnisse oder auch armutsbegünstigende Finanz- oder Energiepolitik einzusetzen. Aktivistisch oder institutionell. 

6. Wenn du ein Wort wärst, welches wäre das?

J: Peng.

7. Musik machen bedeutet für dich…?

J: … mich als Künstlerin begreifen und ausdrücken zu können.

8. Hast du bestimmte Pläne Ziele, von denen du uns erzählen möchtest?

J: Eventuell meinen ersten Track produzieren und veröffentlichen…? Und ich würde super gerne regelmäßig b2b auflegen. Ich suche nach einer FLINTA*-Buddy für Disko, House und Downtempo. Schreib mir, falls du Bock hast.
