Dubstep and D'n'B producer Kontext makes good on the promise of his 12"s for Immerse with an album proper for the Bristolian label. 'Dissociate' is a vividly coherent collection, including six brand new tracks of solemn, Russian spirited electronics pressed a track per side for the optimum listening experience. The flurry of excitement over his early tracks is entirely justified for lovers of the darkest and techiest ends of the dubstep electronica spectrum, hatching atmospheric IDM with the electronic dub sphere of Pole and a minimized version of T++ or Martyn's post-step flex. 'Dissociate' is ultimately a great headphone or armchair listen, the detailed production values intended for closer scrutiny, especially on the insectoid scuttle of 'Clinch' and the majestically synth-washed 'Searching For The Transcendental'. But that's not to negate the finely tuned technoid rhyth(m)otor that keeps his music cruising like a gangsta's bimmer in the dance. If there was anyone from this end of the dubstep pool we'd expect to turn up an ace album, it's Kontext and he's surely proved the point here. Heavyweight darkness. (с) Boomkat

Eraze X Sect Unit - Trash

The second release for Atomic Alert sees False Persona delivering his hard-hitting, explosive electro sound. Although a fresh face, the 21 year old Bournemouth-based producer has been self taught music production and DJing since the age of 13, and after spending years learning how to make different styles of music under a multitude of aliases, his sound as an artist definitely serves as a hybrid of genres.

On the title track Unknown Variable, he combines extra-terrestrial mutating synths and ghostlike pads with an insanely infectious bass line. Similarly, Hive Mind is a deep space club roller constantly buzzing its way through your mind.

The introduction of Brighter Days and By My Side is False Persona's own form of alchemy; reconstructing his usual element of club-ready electro with an expansive sonic landscape of subsonic pressure waves and euphoric pads layered with other-worldly vocal samples and magical glitchy percussion. A nuclear remix of Brighter Days cooked up by Dexorcist, one of the most prominent icons of electro and a dreamy rework of By My Side, Atomic Alert's Nite Fleit presses the button on this diverse weapon of an EP.

»sleepstep« is the first collaboration between raster-noton and dasha rush. the record‘s subtitle »sonar poems for my sleepless friends« describes its underlying concept – »sleepstep« is a trip through electronically alienated microcompositions and sound collages that, interwoven with text passages, aim at creating a dream-like atmosphere.

the stations of this journey are striving for oblivion of time, an immersion, a drifting in universal states – death, life, birth, grief, desire. the titles often appear to be raw sketches, fugitive, surreal short stories that rather want to break open than execute.

the musical arrangement, in this context, can be described as rather subtle and fragile. though electronically manipulated, no production technique is pushing itself to the fore. and though clichés are not dreaded, »sleepstep«, as a result, stays away from being cliché. the sonar poems for her sleepless friends are feminine, subtle and personal reports. a musical dream journey in the form of a classical concept record – an album that also stands in the tradition of ambient music.

dasha rush is already known as a techno dj and producer. here on »sleepstep«, she celebrates her alter ego. the cd version comes with a 32-pages booklet that also shows her photographic interest and includes the aforementioned poems written by her. furthermore there is 2 x 12" vinyl version.

Dasha Rush is a Russian born artist who sees the genre as a starting place not a destination. She is a respected and well-travelled DJ and live performer, but her work is equally focussed away from the dance floor, and sometimes away from music itself. Her recent album for Raster-Noton, Sleepstep, could be a metaphor for her work: "These 16 pieces are transmissions from that state between sleep and wakefulness," said Tony Naylor, a reflection of the in-between zones her music often inhabits. Dubby but intense, brutal but tender, foggy yet clear—Sleepstep was a wonderful mass of contradictions. Not being one thing or the other is vitally important to Rush, which goes hand-in-hand with her strong independent streak. The majority of the music she's released since starting out in 2005 has come through her own Fullpanda label and, as she told us in 2013, she's resistant to playing the publicity game in the way many in the scene do. That's meant she's remained off the radar for some techno fans, but it's also given her the freedom to explore projects and sounds as she pleases. With all this mind, it was little surprise that our invitation to record a podcast was met with, "Yes, but it won't be a club mix." What we got instead was an absorbing 65 minutes of dense ambient soundscapes that shows Rush at her most reflective. The mix comes ahead of the North American premiere of Antarctic Takt, Rush's A/V show with Stanislav Glazov, at this week's Mutek festival in Montreal.

Based in St. Petersburg, Nocow is undoubtedly one of Russian electronic music’s most remarkable protagonists having released on Clone, Figure, Fauxpas Musik, Gost Zvuk and Styrax. Recognised for maintaining consistency whilst traversing various sub-genres, Nocow is as comfortable producing intricate IDM and robust techno as he is calm ambient and melancholic electronica.

In ‘Soul Connection’ a spoken word vocal mutters over metallic percussion and ominous stabs whilst a dense pad washes over everything. An undulating synth and ethereal effects make up ‘Disappear’ before moving onto syncopated drums and shadowy atmospherics in ‘Samaya Dolgaya Noch’. Next up, ‘Stop’ is comprised of mesmerising melodies, sturdy kicks and a looped vox until Nocow concludes the package with a short 2-step cut titled ‘Aesthetic Mind’.
