Voluminous Arts happily announces its third official release, a 12 track digital album and accompanying 3xLP limited 3 color vinyl edition entitled “Disco” by Gavilán Rayna Russom’s elusive alias Black Meteoric Star. 

This is not a Disco record. The title deliberately troubles the music biz’s incessant tendency to hierarchize genre classification over the experience of listening. If you must categorize these mutant sounds think of them as a proposed alternate score for those long, caffeinated sessions in Abby Sciuto’s forensics lab, the soundtrack to a heavy workout in the Westchester Danger Room or perhaps the musical accompaniment to deep body investigations of your own ancestral memories. 

What this record really is, and why it’s called “Disco” has to do with the layering of time and life energy present in the spaces where we have traditionally danced to music which are sometimes called Discos. From the pounding urgency of “Muscle Machine” through the unbridled night vision romp that is “Fluid Feline Forms” and the shimmering investigations of “Whispers Between Worlds” to the extended lazer pointer focus of “I’m Unmelting” this record lays out a broad slab of practice-based research into the ghosts we connect with on the dance floor. Whether it be through partying in former industrial buildings, contested spaces of labor built on lands violently appropriated from indigenous people, uncomfortably inhabiting vacuums in queerness left by the AIDS epidemic, lifting lineages through sampling, or the relentless cycle of whitening that accompanies dance music’s march into the market, our experiences in the Disco have been permeated by the spectral and the haunted. Through rhythm and frequency, organized over time, this music blurs the veil between the living and the dead inviting those who move to it to connect with experiences beyond that false binary. 

What you have here is another fantastic Black Meteoric Star record, as always made without multitracking or overdubbing, recorded directly from single live takes. It is is utterly consistent with all that name has come to mean, but on “Disco” Black Meteoric Star’s vision has been allowed to expand into an almost mythologically epic space. Ancestral time works differently. Settle in and absorb the frequencies. As the closing track suggests, the virtual Disco these sounds evoke is for “Freaks Only”.

J. Mono twists our sense of time again, coming up with the third installment of his ‘Redate’ series: an elegant selection of uncut tracks, roaming in the fields of electro, acid, IDM and EBM. Redate III in its digital format presents tracks that were written and recorded between 2014 and 2015. As the cassette version, it includes not only Redate III (as side A), but a collection of J. Mono’s various other tracks created between 2017 and 2021, that appeared beforehand on various compilation albums (as side B). In other words, with this fresh new tape you’re all set with 8 years of J. Mono experience.

Redate III has a collection of 12 tracks that were all born in the mid 2010s. They are quick and ambitious tracks with usually a fast pace, ready to action and not afraid of melodic or rhythmic complexities. These raw edits usually tell us a discourse of a few key musical elements, constantly intertwined with each other: winding basslines and beats, wandering pads and leads. Never longer than 3 or 4 minutes, they focus on precise and rapid variations of sonic ideas that are full of heart, akin to compositions we know as bagatelles, sonatinas or études from previous centuries.

The twelve tracks are spot on understandings of what intuitive, energetic yet sensitive electronics can mean in the 21st century. Sweet melodies, acidic vibes and dreamy echoes dominate the record while dirty, muddy and distorted sound waves are also eager to take over the course.

Redate III offers a range of impressions and moods, where each track captures one very specific emotional moment. Melancholic and passionate tunes, frantic rhythms and delicate harmonies at work: electrified gnossiennes, beat-driven gymnopédies in 40 minutes.

“OBSSD's album is the product of many obsessions that tormented me in a rather foggy time, embraced by a harsh winter between 2021 and 2022, in the city of Berlin.

The frenetic and furious sound of the distorted and linear basses, accompanied by kicks that oscillate from the firmness of techno to the plasticity of a break beat, in contrast with some stinging melodies full of noise, denote the intensity of the city, and the time when it was recorded.

Each song is part of a backbone that oscillates between erosion and rupture with an enormous force that keeps it always upright, from the marrow. [Black.N]

Visions: A Benefit Compilation for Artsakh is a compilation album with music from a wide range of electronic and dance music artists from the West Coast, East Coast, and beyond.

The album is produced by a community of artists with the intention to raise funds for the recent displacement and violence towards 100,000+ Armenians from the Republic of Artsakh (also known as Nagorno-Karabakh) - a de facto self-governed autonomous region with an Armenian population indigenous to Artsakh. The displaced families and those who have no other option but to return to their war-torn towns are in need of housing, medical, psychiatric support, food, and basic essentials.

*This is an indigenous struggle, and as ethnic-supremacist ideologies are on the rise across the world, we wanted to have a project that stands in solidarity with indigenous people’s right to self-determination and existence, and help from here in a small way.

On September 27, 2020, a large-scale military offensive was unprovokedly launched against the Republic of Artsakh and Armenia by the authoritarian regime of Azerbaijan, backed by Turkey. Armenian civilians, settlements, and civilian infrastructures including schools and churches were continuously bombarded for 45 days with drones, aerial attacks, internationally outlawed cluster bombs and white phosphorus munitions. Several thousands of lives were lost, hundreds still in captivity, and over a hundred thousand Armenians displaced after 70% of Artsakh’s territories were taken away. Currently, ancient Armenian historical, religious, and cultural sites in Artsakh are being destroyed, contributing to the years of cultural genocide by Azerbaijan’s petro-oligarchic regime. This is an indigenous struggle, and as ethnic-supremacist ideologies are on the rise across the world, we stand in solidarity with indigenous people’s right to self-determination and existence.
