ਜੈਤਸਰੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੪ ॥
Jaitsree, Fourth Mehla:

ਹੀਰਾ ਲਾਲੁ ਅਮੋਲਕੁ ਹੈ ਭਾਰੀ ਬਿਨੁ ਗਾਹਕ ਮੀਕਾ ਕਾਖਾ ॥
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਬੜਾ ਹੀ ਕੀਮਤੀ ਹੀਰਾ ਹੈ ਲਾਲ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਗਾਹਕ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਇਹ ਹੀਰਾ ਕੱਖ ਵਰਗਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਪਿਆ ਹੈ 
A jewel or a diamond may be very valuable and heavy, but without a purchaser, it is worth only straw.

ਰਤਨ ਗਾਹਕੁ ਗੁਰੁ ਸਾਧੂ ਦੇਖਿਓ ਤਬ ਰਤਨੁ ਬਿਕਾਨੋ ਲਾਖਾ ॥੧॥
ਜਦੋਂ ਇਸ ਰਤਨ ਦਾ ਗਾਹਕ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲ ਪਿਆ, ਤਦੋਂ ਇਹ ਰਤਨ ਲੱਖੀਂ ਰੁਪਈਂ ਵਿਕਣ ਲੱਗ ਪਿਆ ।੧।
When the Holy Guru, the Purchaser, saw this jewel, He purchased it for hundreds of thousands of dollars. ||1||

ਮੇਰੈ ਮਨਿ ਗੁਪਤ ਹੀਰੁ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਖਾ ॥
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਨਾਮ-ਹੀਰਾ ਲੁਕਾ ਕੇ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਸੀ 
The Lord has kept this jewel hidden within my mind.

ਦੀਨ ਦਇਆਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਇਓ ਗੁਰੁ ਸਾਧੂ ਗੁਰਿ ਮਿਲਿਐ ਹੀਰੁ ਪਰਾਖਾ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਦੀਨਾਂ ਉਤੇ ਦਇਆ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਉਸ ਹਰੀ ਨੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ । ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲਣ ਨਾਲ ਮੈਂ ਉਹ ਹੀਰਾ ਪਰਖ ਲਿਆ (ਮੈਂ ਉਸ ਹੀਰੇ ਦੀ ਕਦਰ ਸਮਝ ਲਈ) ।ਰਹਾਉ।
The Lord, merciful to the meek, led me to meet the Holy Guru; meeting the Guru, I came to appreciate this jewel. ||Pause||

ਮਨਮੁਖ ਕੋਠੀ ਅਗਿਆਨੁ ਅੰਧੇਰਾ ਤਿਨ ਘਰਿ ਰਤਨੁ ਨ ਲਾਖਾ ॥
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਲੋਂ ਬੇ-ਸਮਝੀ (ਦਾ) ਹਨੇਰਾ ਪਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਤਾਹੀਏਂ) ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ-ਘਰ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਨਾਮ-ਰਤਨ (ਕਦੇ) ਨਹੀਂ ਵੇਖਿਆ 
The rooms of the self-willed manmukhs are dark with ignorance; in their homes, the jewel is not visible.

ਤੇ ਊਝੜਿ ਭਰਮਿ ਮੁਏ ਗਾਵਾਰੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਭੁਅੰਗ ਬਿਖੁ ਚਾਖਾ ॥੨॥
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਮਾਇਆ-ਸਪਣੀ (ਦੇ ਮੋਹ) ਦਾ ਜ਼ਹਿਰ ਖਾਂਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, (ਇਸ ਵਾਸਤੇ) ਉਹ ਮੂਰਖ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤੇ ਮਰੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ।੨
Those fools die, wandering in the wilderness, eating the poison of the snake, Maya. ||2||

ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਸਾਧ ਮੇਲਹੁ ਜਨ ਨੀਕੇ ਹਰਿ ਸਾਧੂ ਸਰਣਿ ਹਮ ਰਾਖਾ ॥
ਹੇ ਹਰੀ! ਮੈਨੂੰ ਚੰਗੇ ਸੰਤ ਜਨ ਮਿਲਾ, ਮੈਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਵਿਚ ਰੱਖ 
O Lord, Har, Har, let me meet the humble, holy beings; O Lord, keep me in the Sanctuary of the Holy.

ਹਰਿ ਅੰਗੀਕਾਰੁ ਕਰਹੁ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਹਮ ਪਰੇ ਭਾਗਿ ਤੁਮ ਪਾਖਾ ॥੩॥
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਹੇ ਮਾਲਕ! ਮੇਰੀ ਮਦਦ ਕਰ । ਮੈਂ ਹੋਰ ਪਾਸੇ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਰਨ ਆ ਪਿਆ ਹਾਂ ।੩।
O Lord, make me Your own; O God, Lord and Master, I have hurried to Your side. ||3||

ਜਿਹਵਾ ਕਿਆ ਗੁਣ ਆਖਿ ਵਖਾਣਹ ਤੁਮ ਵਡ ਅਗਮ ਵਡ ਪੁਰਖਾ ॥
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਤੂੰ ਵੱਡਾ ਪੁਰਖ ਹੈਂ, ਤੂੰ ਅਪਹੁੰਚ ਹੈਂ, ਅਸੀ ਆਪਣੀ ਜੀਭ ਨਾਲ ਤੇਰੇ ਕੇਹੜੇ ਕੇਹੜੇ ਗੁਣ ਆਖ ਕੇ ਦੱਸ ਸਕਦੇ ਹਾਂ? 
What Glorious Virtues of Yours can I speak and describe? You are great and unfathomable, the Greatest Being.

ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਧਾਰੀ ਪਾਖਾਣੁ ਡੁਬਤ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਖਾ ॥੪॥੨॥
ਹੇ ਦਾਸ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਆਖ—) ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਉਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਮੇਹਰ ਕੀਤੀ, ਉਸ ਪੱਥਰ ਨੂੰ (ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਵਿਚ) ਡੁੱਬਦੇ ਨੂੰ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਬਚਾ ਲਿਆ ।੪।੨।
The Lord has bestowed His Mercy on servant Nanak; He has saved the sinking stone. ||4||2||

ਰਾਗੁ ਬਿਲਾਵਲੁ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ਚਉਪਦੇ ਘਰੁ ੧ ॥
Raag Bilaaval, First Mehla, Chau-Padhay, First House:

ਤੂ ਸੁਲਤਾਨੁ ਕਹਾ ਹਉ ਮੀਆ ਤੇਰੀ ਕਵਨ ਵਡਾਈ ॥
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਤੇਰੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ, (ਇਹ ਤਾਂ ਇਉਂ ਹੀ ਹੈ ਕਿ) ਤੂੰ ਬਾਦਸ਼ਾਹ ਹੈਂ, ਤੇ ਮੈਂ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਮੀਆਂ ਆਖ ਰਿਹਾ ਹਾਂ । 
You are the Emperor, and I call You a chief - how does this add to Your greatness?

ਜੋ ਤੂ ਦੇਹਿ ਸੁ ਕਹਾ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਮੈ ਮੂਰਖ ਕਹਣੁ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥੧॥
(ਪਰ ਇਤਨੀ ਕੁ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰਨੀ ਮੇਰੀ ਆਪਣੀ ਸਮਰੱਥਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ) ਹੇ ਮਾਲਕ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! (ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰਨ ਦਾ) ਜਿਤਨਾ ਕੁ ਬਲ ਤੂੰ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈਂ ਮੈਂ ਉਤਨਾ ਕੁ ਤੇਰੇ ਗੁਣ ਆਖ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ । ਮੈਂ ਅੰਞਾਣ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਤੇਰੇ ਗੁਣ ਬਿਆਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੇ ।੧।
As You permit me, I praise You, O Lord and Master; I am ignorant, and I cannot chant Your Praises. ||1||

ਤੇਰੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਾ ਦੇਹਿ ਬੁਝਾਈ ॥
ਹੇ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਦੇ ਮਾਲਕ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਤੂੰ ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈਂ । ਮੈਨੂੰ (ਅਜੇਹੀ) ਸਮਝ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ ਕਿ ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰ ਸਕਾਂ, 
Please bless me with such understanding, that I may sing Your Glorious Praises.

ਜੈਸੇ ਸਚ ਮਹਿ ਰਹਉ ਰਜਾਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਤੇ, ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੇ (ਚਰਨਾਂ) ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹਿ ਸਕਾਂ ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
May I dwell in Truth, according to Your Will. ||1||Pause||

ਜੋ ਕਿਛੁ ਹੋਆ ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਤੁਝ ਤੇ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਭ ਅਸਨਾਈ ॥
ਇਹ ਜਿਤਨਾ ਕੁ ਜਗਤ ਬਣਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ ਇਹ ਸਾਰਾ ਤੈਥੋਂ ਹੀ ਬਣਿਆ ਹੈ, ਇਹ ਸਾਰੀ ਤੇਰੀ ਹੀ ਬਜ਼ੁਰਗੀ ਹੈ । 
Whatever has happened, has all come from You. You are All-knowing.

ਤੇਰਾ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਜਾਣਾ ਮੇਰੇ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਮੈ ਅੰਧੁਲੇ ਕਿਆ ਚਤੁਰਾਈ ॥੨॥
ਹੇ ਮਾਲਕ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦਾ ਅੰਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਣ ਸਕਦਾ । ਮੈਂ ਅੰਨ੍ਹਾ ਹਾਂ (ਤੁੱਛ-ਅਕਲ ਹਾਂ) ਮੇਰੇ ਵਿਚ ਕੋਈ ਐਸੀ ਸਿਆਣਪ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ (ਕਿ ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦਾ ਅੰਤ ਜਾਣ ਸਕਾਂ ।੨।
Your limits cannot be known, O my Lord and Master; I am blind - what wisdom do I have? ||2||

ਕਿਆ ਹਉ ਕਥੀ ਕਥੇ ਕਥਿ ਦੇਖਾ ਮੈ ਅਕਥੁ ਨ ਕਥਨਾ ਜਾਈ ॥
ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੇ ਗੁਣ ਬਿਲਕੁਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਹਿ ਸਕਦਾ । ਤੇਰੇ ਗੁਣ ਆਖ ਆਖ ਕੇ ਜਦੋਂ ਮੈਂ ਵੇਖਦਾ ਹਾਂ (ਤਾਂ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਸਮਝ ਪੈਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਕਿ) ਤੇਰਾ ਸਰੂਪ ਬਿਆਨ ਤੋਂ ਪਰੇ ਹੈ, ਮੈਂ ਬਿਆਨ ਕਰਨ ਜੋਗਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹਾਂ ।
What should I say? While talking, I talk of seeing, but I cannot describe the indescribable.

ਜੋ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਸੋਈ ਆਖਾ ਤਿਲੁ ਤੇਰੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥੩॥
ਤੇਰੀ ਰਤਾ ਮਾਤ੍ਰ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਭੀ ਜੇਹੜੀ ਮੈਂ ਆਖਦਾ ਹਾਂ ਉਹੀ ਆਖਦਾ ਹਾਂ ਜੋ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਭਾਉਂਦੀ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, ਜਿਤਨੀ ਕੁ ਤੂੰ ਬਿਆਨ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਸਮਝ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈਂ) ।੩।
As it pleases Your Will, I speak; it is just the tiniest bit of Your greatness. ||3||

ਏਤੇ ਕੂਕਰ ਹਉ ਬੇਗਾਨਾ ਭਉਕਾ ਇਸੁ ਤਨ ਤਾਈ ॥
(ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਇਥੇ ਕਾਮਾਦਿਕ) ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਕੁੱਤੇ ਹਨ, ਮੈਂ (ਇਹਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ) ਓਪਰਾ (ਆ ਫਸਿਆ) ਹਾਂ, (ਜਿਤਨੀ ਕੁ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ ਉਹ ਭੀ ਮੈਂ) ਆਪਣੇ ਇਸ ਸਰੀਰ ਨੂੰ (ਕਾਮਾਦਿਕ ਕੁੱਤਿਆਂ ਤੋਂ ਬਚਾਣ ਲਈ ਭੌਂਕਦਾ ਹੀ ਹਾਂ, ਜਿਵੇਂ ਓਪਰਾ ਕੁੱਤਾ ਵੈਰੀ ਕੁੱਤਿਆਂ ਤੋਂ ਬਚਣ ਲਈ ਭੌਂਕਦਾ ਹੈ) । 
Among so many dogs, I am an outcast; I bark for my body's belly.

ਭਗਤਿ ਹੀਣੁ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਜੇ ਹੋਇਗਾ ਤਾ ਖਸਮੈ ਨਾਉ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥੪॥੧॥
(ਮੈਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਧਰਵਾਸ ਹੈ ਕਿ) ਜੇ (ਤੇਰਾ ਦਾਸ) ਨਾਨਕ ਭਗਤੀ ਤੋਂ ਸੱਖਣਾ ਹੈ (ਤਾਂ ਭੀ ਤੂੰ ਮੇਰੇ ਸਿਰ ਤੇ ਰਾਖਾ ਖਸਮ ਹੈਂ, ਤੇ ਤੈਂ) ਖਸਮ ਦੀ ਇਹ ਸੋਭਾ ਦੂਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਗਈ (ਕਿ ਤੂੰ ਮੁੱਢ ਕਦੀਮਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਸਰਨ ਆਏ ਦੀ ਸਹੈਤਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਆਇਆ ਹੈਂ) ।੪।੧।
Without devotional worship, O Nanak, even so, still, my Master's Name does not leave me. ||4||1||
