The Indian Sanskrit name for this raga is Kalyan and the Persian is Yuman. In the Ragmala, Kalian is the son of Dipak while today it is the head of the Kalian thata. It is performed during the first part of the night and is considered a blessing bringing all good into one's life. Guru Ram Das and Guru Arjan composed 23 hymns to this raga. The texts exalt the far-reaching and all-pervading power of the Lord. In the Holy Book the only raga variant given is Bhopali (Bhupali).

Guru Sahib Ji sat Bhai Gopala Ji on a higher platform then themselves out of respect for Gurbani. In the same way Sant Ji explain that when teaching Santhia, the person teaching Santhia should not sit higher then any student with a Pothi Sahib, as it is grave disrespect of Gurbani. Sant Kartar Singh Ji explain whenever they would recite Gurbani Nitnem to Sant Gurbachan Singh Ji, Sant Ji would always make them sit on the right hand side and on a higher level then themselves, such was their respect for Gurbani. Sant Kartar Singh Ji talk about the importance of maintaining utmost respect of Gurbani while doing Santhia, by both the Ustaad & Vidhiaarthi, this is the only way we can obtain Guru Ji’s happiness. Guru Sahib were ready to give the Gurgadhi as a reward to Bhai Gopala Ji, this is how high Guru Sahib regarded the Shudh Paath of Gurbani. poot ihai pran toh praan jab lag ghaT thaare ||
“Aye My Son, so long as there is life m your body,

ਨਿਜ ਨਾਰੀ ਕੇ ਸਾਥ ਨੇਹੁ ਤੁਮ ਨਿਤ ਬਢੈਯਹੁ ॥
nij naaree ke saath neh tum nit baddaiyahu ||
“You promise to enhance love with your own wife,

ਪਰ ਨਾਰੀ ਕੀ ਸੇਜ ਭੂਲਿ ਸੁਪਨੇ ਹੂੰ ਨ ਜੈਯਹੁ ॥੫੧॥
par naaree kee sej bhool supane hoo(n) na jaiyahu ||51||
“But never, even by mistake, bed with else’s wife.(51)

ਪਰ ਨਾਰੀ ਕੇ ਭਜੇ ਸਹਸ ਬਾਸਵ ਭਗ ਪਾਏ ॥
par naaree ke bhaje sahas baasav bhag paae ||
“By relishing else’s wife, Inder, the god was showered with female genitals.

ਪਰ ਨਾਰੀ ਕੇ ਭਜੇ ਚੰਦ੍ਰ ਕਾਲੰਕ ਲਗਾਏ ॥
par naaree ke bhaje cha(n)dhr kaala(n)k lagaae ||
“By relishing else’s wife, Moon was blemished.

ਪਰ ਨਾਰੀ ਕੇ ਹੇਤ ਸੀਸ ਦਸ ਸੀਸ ਗਵਾਯੋ ॥
par naaree ke het sees dhas sees gavaayo ||
“By relishing else’s wife, Ten Headed Raawana lost all his ten heads.

ਹੋ ਪਰ ਨਾਰੀ ਕੇ ਹੇਤ ਕਟਕ ਕਵਰਨ ਕੌ ਘਾਯੋ ॥੫੨॥
ho par naaree ke het kaTak kavaran kau ghaayo ||52||
“By relishing else’s wife all the clan of Korav was annihilated.(52)

ਪਰ ਨਾਰੀ ਸੌ ਨੇਹੁ ਛੁਰੀ ਪੈਨੀ ਕਰਿ ਜਾਨਹੁ ॥
par naaree sau neh chhuree painee kar jaanahu ||
“The love with else’s wife is like a sharp dagger.

ਪਰ ਨਾਰੀ ਕੇ ਭਜੇ ਕਾਲ ਬ੍ਯਾਪਯੋ ਤਨ ਮਾਨਹੁ ॥
par naaree ke bhaje kaal bayaapayo tan maanahu ||
“The love with else’s wife is an invitation to death.

ਅਧਿਕ ਹਰੀਫੀ ਜਾਨਿ ਭੋਗ ਪਰ ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਜੋ ਕਰਹੀ ॥
adhik hareefee jaan bhog par tiray jo karahee ||
“The one who thinks himself to be very brave and indulges carnally with else’s wife,

ਹੋ ਅੰਤ ਸ੍ਵਾਨ ਕੀ ਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਹਾਥ ਲੇਾਂਡੀ ਕੇ ਮਰਹੀ ॥੫੩॥
ho a(n)t savaiaan kee mirat haath leaa(n)ddee ke marahee ||53||
“He is killed in the hands of a coward like a dog.”(53)

ਬਾਲ ਹਮਾਰੇ ਪਾਸ ਦੇਸ ਦੇਸਨ ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਆਵਹਿ ॥
baal hamaare paas dhes dhesan tiray aaveh ||
“Listen lady! Women come to us from far off lands,

ਮਨ ਬਾਛਤ ਬਰ ਮਾਗਿ ਜਾਨਿ ਗੁਰ ਸੀਸ ਝੁਕਾਵਹਿ ॥
man baachhat bar maag jaan gur sees jhukaaveh ||
“They bow their heads and wish for boons.

ਸਿਖ੍ਯ ਪੁਤ੍ਰ ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਸੁਤਾ ਜਾਨਿ ਅਪਨੇ ਚਿਤ ਧਰਿਯੈ ॥
sikhay putr tiray sutaa jaan apane chit dhariyai ||
“Those Sikhs (disciples) are like my sons and their wives like my daughters.

ਹੋ ਕਹੁ ਸੁੰਦਰਿ ਤਿਹ ਸਾਥ ਗਵਨ ਕੈਸੇ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿਯੈ ॥੫੪॥
ho kahu su(n)dhar teh saath gavan kaise kar kariyai ||54||
“Tell me, now, the pretty one, how could I copulate with them.”(54)

ਧੰਨ ਸੁ ਰਾਗ ਸੁਰੰਗੜੇ ਆਲਾਪਤ ਸਭ ਤਿਖ ਜਾਇ॥
          -         ਰਾਗ ਨਾਦੁ ਸਭ ਸਚੁ ਹੈ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਕਹੀ ਨ ਜਾਇ॥
          -         ਰਾਗ ਨਾਦ ਸਬਦਿ ਸੋਹਣੇ ਜਾ ਲਾਗੈ ਸਹਜਿ ਧਿਆਨੁ॥
          -         ਗੁਣ ਗੋਵਿੰਦ ਗਾਵਹੁ ਸਭਿ ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਰਾਗ ਰਤਨ ਰਸਨਾ ਆਲਾਪ॥
ਰਾਗ ਤੇ ਬਾਣੀ ਦਾ ਸੰਜੋਗ ਹੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਜੀ ਹਨ। ਬਾਣੀ ਦਾ ਮੁੱਖ ਉਦੇਸ਼ ਵਿਛੜੀ ਹੋਈ ਆਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲ ਅਭੇਦ ਕਰਨਾ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਅਧਿਆਤਮਕ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤੀ ਲਈਸ਼ਬਦ ਗੁਰੂ, ਸੁਰਤਿ ਧੁਨਿ ਚੇਲਾ ਦੇ ਸਿਧਾਂਤ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਹੀ ਗ੍ਰਹਿਣ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ। ਬਾਣੀ ਉੱਪਰ ਰਾਗਾਂ ਦਾ ਅੰਕਣ ਬਾਣੀ ਦੇ ਕੀਰਤਨ ਵੱਲ ਸਿੱਧਾ ਸੰਕੇਤ ਹੈ। ਇਹ ਭਾਰਤੀ ਪਰੰਪਰਾ ਸੰਤ-ਭਗਤਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਤੋਂ ਪੂਰਵ ਵੀ ਪ੍ਰਚੱਲਿਤ ਸੀ। ਭਗਤੀ ਅੰਦੋਲਨ ਦੇ ਪੈਰੋਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਇਹ ਪ੍ਰਚਾਰ ਕਾਫੀ ਰਿਹਾ। ਸਰਗੁਣ ਤੇ ਨਿਰਗੁਣ ਭਗਤੀ ਦੇ ਸੰਤਾਂ-ਭਗਤਾਂ ਨੇ ਰਾਗਮਈ ਕੀਰਤਨ ਲਈ ਰਾਗਾਂ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਯੋਗ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਕਬੀਰ, ਸੂਰਦਾਸ, ਨਾਮਦੇਵ ਆਦਿ।
          ਸ੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦਾ ਸੰਕਲਨ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਅਰਜਨ ਦੇਵ ਜੀ ਨੇ ਕੀਤਾ। ਸ੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਸਾਬਿ ਦੀ ਸੰਪਾਦਨਾ ਸਮੇਂ ਵੀ ਰਾਗ ਨੂੰ ਆਧਾਰ ਬਣਾਇਆ ਗਿਆ। ਬਾਣੀ ਦੀ ਵੰਡ ਵੇਲੇ ਵੀ ਬਾਣੀਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਬਜਾਇ ਰਾਗ ਅਧਿਆਇਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਤਰਜੀਹ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਗਈ ਅਤੇ ਜਪੁਜੀ, ਸਵੱਈਏ, ਵਾਰਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਵਧੀਕ ਸਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ ਸਾਰੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਨੂੰ 31 ਰਾਗ ਤੇ 31 ਰਾਗ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਦਰਜ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ।
          ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਸੰਗੀਤ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰਯੁਕਤ ਰਾਗ ੩੧ ਮੁੱਖ ਰਾਗ ਸਿਰੀ, ਮਾਝ, ਗਉੜੀ, ਆਸਾ, ਗੂਜਰੀ, ਦੇਵਗੰਧਾਰੀ, ਬਿਹਾਗੜਾ, ਵਡਹੰਸ, ਸੋਰਠਿ, ਧਨਾਸਰੀ, ਜੈਤਸਰੀ, ਟੋਡੀ, ਬੈਰਾੜੀ, ਤਿਲੰਗ, ਸੂਹੀ, ਬਿਲਾਵਲ, ਗੋਂਡ, ਰਾਮਕਲੀ, ਨਟ ਨਾਰਾਇਣ, ਮਾਲੀ ਗਉੜਾ, ਮਾਰੂ, ਤੁਖਾਰੀ, ਕੇਦਾਰਾ, ਭੈਰਉ, ਬਸੰਤ, ਸਾਰੰਗ, ਮਲਹਾਰ, ਕਾਨੜਾ, ਕਲਿਆਣ, ਪ੍ਰਭਾਤੀ, ਜੈਜਾਵੰਤੀ। (ਸ੍ਰੀ ਗੁ.ਗ੍ਰੰ. ਸਾਹਿਬ, ਪੰਨਾ ੧੫੧)।
