ਕਬੀਰੁ ॥ ਮਾਰੂ ॥
Kabeer, Maaroo:

ਰਾਮੁ ਸਿਮਰੁ ਪਛੁਤਾਹਿਗਾ ਮਨ ॥
ਹੇ ਮਨ! (ਹੁਣ ਹੀ ਵੇਲਾ ਹੈ) ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕਰ, (ਨਹੀਂ ਤਾਂ ਸਮਾ ਵਿਹਾ ਜਾਣ ਤੇ) ਅਫ਼ਸੋਸ ਕਰੇਂਗਾ ।
Meditate in remembrance on the Lord, or else you will regret it in the end, O mind.

ਪਾਪੀ ਜੀਅਰਾ ਲੋਭੁ ਕਰਤੁ ਹੈ ਆਜੁ ਕਾਲਿ ਉਠਿ ਜਾਹਿਗਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਫਸੀ ਹੋਈ ਤੇਰੀ ਕਮਜ਼ੋਰ ਜਿੰਦ (ਧਨ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਦਾ) ਲੋਭ ਕਰ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਤੂੰ ਥੋੜੇ ਹੀ ਦਿਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ (ਇਹ ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ ਇੱਥੋਂ) ਤੁਰ ਜਾਏਂਗਾ ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
O sinful soul, you act in greed, but today or tomorrow, you will have to get up and leave. ||1||Pause||

ਲਾਲਚ ਲਾਗੇ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ਮਾਇਆ ਭਰਮ ਭੁਲਾਹਿਗਾ ॥
ਹੇ ਮਨ! ਤੂੰ ਲਾਲਚ ਵਿਚ ਫਸ ਕੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਅਜਾਈਂ ਗਵਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈਂ, ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਵਿਚ ਖੁੰਝਿਆ ਫਿਰਦਾ ਹੈਂ ।
Clinging to greed, you have wasted your life, deluded in the doubt of Maya.

ਧਨ ਜੋਬਨ ਕਾ ਗਰਬੁ ਨ ਕੀਜੈ ਕਾਗਦ ਜਿਉ ਗਲਿ ਜਾਹਿਗਾ ॥੧॥
ਨਾਹ ਕਰ ਇਹ ਮਾਣ ਧਨ ਤੇ ਜੁਆਨੀ ਦਾ, (ਮੌਤ ਆਉਣ ਤੇ) ਕਾਗ਼ਜ਼ ਵਾਂਗ ਗਲ ਜਾਏਂਗਾ ।੧।
Do not take pride in your wealth and youth; you shall crumble apart like dry paper. ||1||

ਜਉ ਜਮੁ ਆਇ ਕੇਸ ਗਹਿ ਪਟਕੈ ਤਾ ਦਿਨ ਕਿਛੁ ਨ ਬਸਾਹਿਗਾ ॥
ਹੇ ਮਨ! ਜਦੋਂ ਜਮ ਨੇ ਆ ਕੇ ਕੇਸਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਫੜ ਕੇ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਭੁੰਞੇ ਪਟਕਾਇਆ, ਤਦੋਂ ਤੇਰੀ (ਉਸ ਅੱਗੇ) ਕੋਈ ਪੇਸ਼ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਇਗੀ ।
When the Messenger of Death comes and grabs you by the hair, and knocks you down, on that day, you shall be powerless.

ਸਿਮਰਨੁ ਭਜਨੁ ਦਇਆ ਨਹੀ ਕੀਨੀ ਤਉ ਮੁਖਿ ਚੋਟਾ ਖਾਹਿਗਾ ॥੨॥
ਤੂੰ ਹੁਣ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਭਜਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦਾ, ਤੂੰ ਦਇਆ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾਲਦਾ, ਮਰਨ ਵੇਲੇ ਦੁਖੀ ਹੋਵੇਂਗਾ ।੨।
You do not remember the Lord, or vibrate upon Him in meditation, and you do not practice compassion; you shall be beaten on your face. ||2||

ਧਰਮ ਰਾਇ ਜਬ ਲੇਖਾ ਮਾਗੈ ਕਿਆ ਮੁਖੁ ਲੈ ਕੈ ਜਾਹਿਗਾ ॥
ਹੇ ਮਨ! ਜਦੋਂ ਧਰਮਰਾਜ ਨੇ (ਤੈਥੋਂ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਿਚ ਕੀਤੇ ਕੰਮਾਂ ਦਾ) ਹਿਸਾਬ ਮੰਗਿਆ, ਤਾਂ ਕੀਹ ਮੂੰਹ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਸਾਹਮਣੇ ਹੋਵੇਂਗਾ?
When the Righteous Judge of Dharma calls for your account, what face will you show Him then?

ਕਹਤੁ ਕਬੀਰੁ ਸੁਨਹੁ ਰੇ ਸੰਤਹੁ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਤਰਿ ਜਾਂਹਿਗਾ ॥੩॥੧॥
ਕਬੀਰ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ—ਹੇ ਸੰਤ ਜਨੋ! ਸੁਣੋ, ਸਾਧ-ਸੰਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਹੀ (ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ) ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘੀਦਾ ਹੈ ।੩।੧।
Says Kabeer, listen, O Saints: in the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, you shall be saved. ||3||1||

ਸੰਤ ਸਭਾ ਮਹਿ ਬੈਸਿ ਕਿ ਕੀਰਤਿ ਮੈ ਕਹਾਂ ॥
(ਹੇ ਸਹੇਲੀ! ਮੇਰੀ ਇਹ ਤਾਂਘ ਹੈ ਕਿ) ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਵਿਚ ਮੇਰਾ ਬਹਿਣ-ਖਲੋਣ ਹੋ ਜਾਏ ਤਾ ਕਿ ਮੈਂ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ) ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰਦੀ ਰਹਾਂ,
Seated in the Society of the Saints, I chant the Lord's Praises.

ਅਰਪੀ ਸਭੁ ਸੀਗਾਰੁ ਏਹੁ ਜੀਉ ਸਭੁ ਦਿਵਾ ॥
(ਉਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਪਤੀ ਦੇ ਮਿਲਾਪ ਦੇ ਵੱਟੇ ਵਿਚ) ਮੈਂ (ਆਪਣਾ) ਸਾਰਾ ਸਿੰਗਾਰ ਭੇਟ ਕਰ ਦਿਆਂ, ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣੀ ਜਿੰਦ ਭੀ ਹਵਾਲੇ ਕਰ ਦਿਆਂ ।
I dedicate all my adornments to Him, and give all this soul to Him.

ਆਸ ਪਿਆਸੀ ਸੇਜ ਸੁ ਕੰਤਿ ਵਿਛਾਈਐ ॥
(ਦਰਸਨ ਦੀ) ਆਸ ਦੀ ਤਾਂਘ ਵਾਲੀ ਦੀ ਮੇਰੀ ਹਿਰਦਾ-ਸੇਜ ਕੰਤ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ (ਆਪ) ਵਿਛਾਈ ਹੈ ।
With hopeful yearning for Him, I have made the bed for my Husband.

ਹਰਿਹਾਂ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਭਾਗੁ ਤ ਸਾਜਨੁ ਪਾਈਐ ॥੨॥
 ਹੇ ਸਹੇਲੀਏ! ਜੇ ਮੱਥੇ ਉੱਤੇ ਭਾਗ ਜਾਗ ਪਏ ਤਾਂ ਹੀ ਸੱਜਣ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ ।੨।
O Lord! If such good destiny is inscribed upon my forehead, then I shall find my Friend. ||2||

ਸਖੀ ਕਾਜਲ ਹਾਰ ਤੰਬੋਲ ਸਭੈ ਕਿਛੁ ਸਾਜਿਆ ॥
ਹੇ ਸਹੇਲੀਏ! (ਜੇ) ਕੱਜਲ, ਹਾਰ, ਪਾਨ—ਇਹ ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਤਿਆਰ ਭੀ ਕਰ ਲਿਆ ਜਾਏ,
O my companion, I have prepared everything: make-up, garlands and betel-leaves.

ਸੋਲਹ ਕੀਏ ਸੀਗਾਰ ਕਿ ਅੰਜਨੁ ਪਾਜਿਆ ॥
(ਜੇ) ਸੋਲ੍ਹਾਂ ਸਿੰਗਾਰ ਭੀ ਕਰ ਲਏ ਜਾਣ, ਤੇ (ਅੱਖਾਂ ਵਿਚ) ਸੁਰਮਾ ਭੀ ਪਾ ਲਿਆ ਜਾਏ,
I have embellished myself with the sixteen decorations, and applied the mascara to my eyes.

ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥

One Universal Creator God. By The Grace Of The True Guru:

ਦਿਲਹੁ ਮੁਹਬਤਿ ਜਿੰਨ੍ਹ ਸੇਈ ਸਚਿਆ ॥
dhilahu muhabat ji(n)n(h) seiee sachiaa ||
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਦਾ ਰੱਬ ਨਾਲ ਦਿਲੋਂ ਪਿਆਰ ਹੈ, ਉਹੀ ਸੱਚੇ ਆਸ਼ਕ ਹਨ;
They alone are true, whose love for God is deep and heart-felt.

ਜਿਨ੍ਹ ਮਨਿ ਹੋਰੁ ਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਰੁ ਸਿ ਕਾਂਢੇ ਕਚਿਆ ॥੧॥
jin(h) man hor mukh hor s kaa(n)dde kachiaa ||1||
ਪਰ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਹੋਰ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਮੂੰਹੋਂ ਕੁਝ ਹੋਰ ਆਖਦੇ ਹਨ ਉਹ ਕੱਚੇ (ਆਸ਼ਕ) ਆਖੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ।੧।
Those who have one thing in their heart, and something else in their mouth, are judged to be false. ||1||

ਰਤੇ ਇਸਕ ਖੁਦਾਇ ਰੰਗਿ ਦੀਦਾਰ ਕੇ ॥
rate isak khudhai ra(n)g dheedhaar ke ||
ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਰੱਬ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਵਿਚ ਰੱਤੇ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ, ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਰੱਬ ਦੇ ਦੀਦਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗੇ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ, (ਉਹੀ ਅਸਲ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਹਨ);
Those who are imbued with love for the Lord, are delighted by His Vision.

ਵਿਸਰਿਆ ਜਿਨ੍ਹ ਨਾਮੁ ਤੇ ਭੁਇ ਭਾਰੁ ਥੀਏ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
visariaa jin(h) naam te bhui bhaar the'ee ||1|| rahaau ||
ਪਰ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਰੱਬ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਭੁੱਲ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਧਰਤੀ ਉੱਤੇ ਨਿਰਾ ਭਾਰ ਹੀ ਹਨ ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
Those who forget the Naam, the Name of the Lord, are a burden on the earth. ||1||Pause||

ਆਪਿ ਲੀਏ ਲੜਿ ਲਾਇ ਦਰਿ ਦਰਵੇਸ ਸੇ ॥
aap le'ee laR lai dhar dharaves se ||
ਉਹੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਰੱਬ ਦੇ) ਦਰਵਾਜ਼ੇ ਹਨ (ਉਹੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਰੱਬ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਇਸ਼ਕ ਦਾ ਖੈਰ ਮੰਗ ਸਕਦੇ ਹਨ) ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਰੱਬ ਨੇ ਆਪ ਆਪਣੇ ਲੜ ਲਾਇਆ ਹੈ, 
Those whom the Lord attaches to the hem of His robe, are the true dervishes at His Door.

ਤਿਨ ਧੰਨੁ ਜਣੇਦੀ ਮਾਉ ਆਏ ਸਫਲੁ ਸੇ ॥੨॥
tin dha(n)n janedhee maau aae safal se ||2||
ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਜੰਮਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਮਾਂ ਭਾਗਾਂ ਵਾਲੀ ਹੈ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ (ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ) ਆਉਣਾ ਮੁਬਾਰਕ ਹੈ ।੨।
Blessed are the mothers who gave birth to them, and fruitful is their coming into the world. ||2||

ਪਰਵਦਗਾਰ ਅਪਾਰ ਅਗਮ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਤੂ ॥
paravadhagaar apaar agam bea(n)t too ||
ਹੇ ਪਾਲਣਹਾਰ! ਹੇ ਬੇਅੰਤ! ਹੇ ਅਪਹੁੰਚ! 
O Lord, Sustainer and Cherisher, You are infinite, unfathomable and endless.

ਜਿਨਾ ਪਛਾਤਾ ਸਚੁ ਚੁੰਮਾ ਪੈਰ ਮੂੰ ॥੩॥
jinaa pachhaataa sach chu(n)maa pair moo(n) ||3||
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਇਹ ਸਮਝ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਤੂੰ ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈਂ, ਮੈਂ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਪੈਰ ਚੁੰਮਦਾ ਹਾਂ ।੩।
Those who recognize the True Lord - I kiss their feet. ||3||

ਤੇਰੀ ਪਨਹ ਖੁਦਾਇ ਤੂ ਬਖਸੰਦਗੀ ॥
teree paneh khudhai too bakhasa(n)dhagee ||
ਹੇ ਖ਼ੁਦਾ! ਮੈਨੂੰ ਤੇਰਾ ਹੀ ਆਸਰਾ ਹੈ, ਤੂੰ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈਂ; 
I seek Your Protection - You are the Forgiving Lord.

ਸੇਖ ਫਰੀਦੈ ਖੈਰੁ ਦੀਜੈ ਬੰਦਗੀ ॥੪॥੧॥
sekh fareedhai khair dheejai ba(n)dhagee ||4||1||
ਮੈਨੂੰ ਸੇਖ਼ ਫ਼ਰੀਦ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਬੰਦਗੀ ਦਾ ਖ਼ੈਰ ਪਾ ।੪।੧।

Shalok, First Mehla:

ਹੁਕਮਿ ਰਜਾਈ ਸਾਖਤੀ ਦਰਗਹ ਸਚੁ ਕਬੂਲੁ ॥
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਵਿਚ ਤੁਰਿਆਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲ ਬਣ ਆਉਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਹਜ਼ੂਰੀ ਵਿਚ ਸੱਚ  (ਭਾਵ, ਸਿਮਰਨ) ਪ੍ਰਵਾਨ ਹੈ ।
Submit to the Will of the Lord Commander; in His Court, only Truth is accepted.

ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਲੇਖਾ ਮੰਗਸੀ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੇਖਿ ਨ ਭੂਲੁ ॥
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਦੁਨੀਆ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ (ਸਿਮਰਨ ਨੂੰ ਭੁੱਲਣ ਦੀ) ਗ਼ਲਤੀ ਨਾਹ ਖਾਹ, ਮਾਲਕ (ਤੇਰੇ ਅਮਲਾਂ ਦਾ) ਲੇਖਾ ਮੰਗੇਗਾ ।
Your Lord and Master shall call you to account; do not go astray on beholding the world.

ਦਿਲ ਦਰਵਾਨੀ ਜੋ ਕਰੇ ਦਰਵੇਸੀ ਦਿਲੁ ਰਾਸਿ ॥
ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਿਲ ਦੀ ਰਾਖੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਦਿਲ ਨੂੰ ਸਿੱਧੇ ਰਾਹ ਤੇ ਰੱਖਣ ਦੀ ਫ਼ਕੀਰੀ ਕਮਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
One who keeps watch over his heart, and keeps his heart pure, is a dervish, a saintly devotee.

ਇਸਕ ਮੁਹਬਤਿ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਲੇਖਾ ਕਰਤੇ ਪਾਸਿ ॥੧॥
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਸ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਮੁਹੱਬਤ ਦਾ ਹਿਸਾਬ ਕਰਤਾਰ ਦੇ ਪਾਸ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਨੂੰ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ) ।੧।
Love and affection, O Nanak, are in the accounts placed before the Creator. ||1||

ਸਸਤ੍ਰਨ ਸੋ ਅਤਿ ਹੀ ਰਨ ਭੀਤਰ ਜੂਝਿ ਮਰੋ ਕਹਿ ਸਾਚ ਪਤੀਜੈ ॥
If I fall a martyr while fighting with my enemies then I shall think that I have realised Truth

ਸੰਤ ਸਹਾਇ ਸਦਾ ਜਗ ਮਾਇ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰ ਸ੍ਯਾਮ ਇਹੈ ਵਰੁ ਦੀਜੈ ॥੧੯੦੦॥
O Sustainer of the Universe! I may always help the saints in this world and destroy the tyrants, bestow this boon on me.1900.

ਗਾਵਹੁ ਰਾਮ ਕੇ ਗੁਣ ਗੀਤ ॥
Sing the songs of Praise of the Lord.

ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਤ ਪਰਮ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਆਵਾ ਗਉਣੁ ਮਿਟੈ ਮੇਰੇ ਮੀਤ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
Chanting the Naam, the Name of the Lord, total peace is obtained; coming and going is ended, my friend. ||1||Pause||

ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਤ ਹੋਵਤ ਪਰਗਾਸੁ ॥
Singing the Glorious Praises of the Lord, one is enlightened,

ਚਰਨ ਕਮਲ ਮਹਿ ਹੋਇ ਨਿਵਾਸੁ ॥੧॥
And comes to dwell in His lotus feet. ||1||

ਸੰਤਸੰਗਤਿ ਮਹਿ ਹੋਇ ਉਧਾਰੁ ॥
In the Society of the Saints, one is saved.


ਨਾਨਕ ਭਵਜਲੁ ਉਤਰਸਿ ਪਾਰਿ ॥੨॥੧॥੫੭॥

Soohee, First Mehla:

ਜੋਗੀ ਹੋਵੈ ਜੋਗਵੈ ਭੋਗੀ ਹੋਵੈ ਖਾਇ ॥
jogee hovai jogavai bhogee hovai khai ||
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਜੋਗੀ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਜੋਗ ਹੀ ਕਮਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਜੋਗ ਕਮਾਣ ਨੂੰ ਹੀ ਸਹੀ ਰਸਤਾ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ), ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗ੍ਰਿਹਸਤੀ ਬਣਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਭੋਗਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਮਸਤ ਹੈ 
The Yogi practices yoga, and the pleasure-seeker practices eating.

ਤਪੀਆ ਹੋਵੈ ਤਪੁ ਕਰੇ ਤੀਰਥਿ ਮਲਿ ਮਲਿ ਨਾਇ ॥੧॥
tapeeaa hovai tap kare teerath mal mal nai ||1||
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਤਪੀ ਬਣਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ (ਸਦਾ) ਤਪ (ਹੀ) ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਤੀਰਥ ਉਤੇ (ਜਾ ਕੇ) ਮਲ ਮਲ ਕੇ (ਭਾਵ, ਬੜੇ ਸਿਦਕ-ਸਰਧਾ ਨਾਲ) ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ।੧।
The austere practice austerities, bathing and rubbing themselves at sacred shrines of pilgrimage. ||1||

ਤੇਰਾ ਸਦੜਾ ਸੁਣੀਜੈ ਭਾਈ ਜੇ ਕੋ ਬਹੈ ਅਲਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
teraa sadhaRaa suneejai bhaiee je ko bahai alai ||1|| rahaau ||
ਪਰ) ਹੇ ਪਿਆਰੇ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ)! ਮੈਂ ਤਾਂ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦਾ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਹੀ ਸੁਣਨਾ ਚਾਹੁੰਦਾ ਹਾਂ, ਜੇ ਕੋਈ (ਮੇਰੇ ਕੋਲ) ਬੈਠ ਜਾਏ ਤੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਸੁਣਾਵੇ ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
Let me hear some news of You, O Beloved; if only someone would come and sit with me, and tell me. ||1||Pause||

ਜੈਸਾ ਬੀਜੈ ਸੋ ਲੁਣੇ ਜੋ ਖਟੇ ਸੋੁ ਖਾਇ ॥
jaisaa beejai so lune jo khaTe suo khai ||
(ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਜੇਹੋ ਜੇਹਾ ਬੀਜ ਬੀਜਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹੋ (ਜੇਹਾ ਫਲ) ਵੱਢਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜੋ ਕੁਝ ਖੱਟੀ-ਕਮਾਈ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹੀ ਵਰਤਦਾ ਹੈ (ਜੋਗ ਭੋਗ ਤੇ ਤਪ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੀ ਕਮਾਈ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ ਪਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਹਜ਼ੂਰੀ ਵਿਚ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਹੀ ਪਰਵਾਨ ਹੈ) 
As one plants, so does he harvest; whatever he earns, he eats.

ਅਗੈ ਪੁਛ ਨ ਹੋਵਈ ਜੇ ਸਣੁ ਨੀਸਾਣੈ ਜਾਇ ॥੨॥
agai puchh na hoviee je san neesaanai jai ||2||
ਜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦਾ ਪਰਵਾਨਾ ਲੈ ਕੇ (ਇਥੋਂ) ਜਾਏ ਤਾਂ ਅਗਾਂਹ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ) ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਰੋਕ-ਟੋਕ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ ।੨।
In the world hereafter, his account is not called for, if he goes with the insignia of the Lord. ||2||

ਤੈਸੋ ਜੈਸਾ ਕਾਢੀਐ ਜੈਸੀ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਇ ॥
taiso jaisaa kaaddeeaai jaisee kaar kamai ||
ਮਨੁੱਖ ਜਿਹੋ ਜੇਹੀ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹੋ ਜੇਹਾ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਪੈ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇ ਪੰਧ ਵਿਚ ਭੀ ਇਹੀ ਨਿਯਮ ਹੈ । ਭਗਤ ਉਹੀ ਜੋ ਭਗਤੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ । ਜੋਗ ਭੋਗ ਜਾਂ ਤਪ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਭਗਤੀ-ਭਾਵ ਪੈਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ) ।
According to the actions the mortal commits, so is he proclaimed.

ਜੋ ਦਮੁ ਚਿਤਿ ਨ ਆਵਈ ਸੋ ਦਮੁ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਜਾਇ ॥੩॥
jo dham chit na aaviee so dham birathaa jai ||3||
(ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ) ਜੇਹੜਾ ਸੁਆਸ (ਕਿਸੇ ਐਸੇ ਉੱਦਮ ਵਿਚ ਲੰਘਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ) ਉਸ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਤਾਂ ਉਹ ਸੁਆਸ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਹੀ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।੩।
And that breath which is drawn without thinking of the Lord, that breath goes in vain. ||3||

ਇਹੁ ਤਨੁ ਵੇਚੀ ਬੈ ਕਰੀ ਜੇ ਕੋ ਲਏ ਵਿਕਾਇ ॥
eih tan vechee bai karee je ko le vikai ||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜਿਸ (ਮਨੁੱਖਾ) ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਨਾਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਉਹ ਸਰੀਰ ਕਿਸੇ ਕੰਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦਾ (ਉਹ ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਹੀ ਗਿਆ ਸਮਝੋ 
I would sell this body, if someone would only purchase it.

ਨਾਨਕ ਕੰਮਿ ਨ ਆਵਈ ਜਿਤੁ ਤਨਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਸਚਾ ਨਾਉ ॥੪॥੫॥੭॥
naanak ka(n)m na aaviee jit tan naahee sachaa naau ||4||5||7||
ਇਸ ਵਾਸਤੇ) ਜੇ ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਵੱਟੇ ਵਿਚ ਦੇ ਕੇ ਮੇਰਾ ਸਰੀਰ ਲੈਣਾ ਚਾਹੇ ਤਾਂ ਮੈਂ ਇਹ ਸਰੀਰ ਵੇਚਣ ਨੂੰ ਤਿਆਰ ਹਾਂ ਮੁੱਲ ਦੇਣ ਨੂੰ ਤਿਆਰ ਹਾਂ ।੪।੫।੭।
O Nanak, that body is of no use at all, if it does not enshrine the Name of the True Lord. ||4||5||7||

ਧੰਨ ਸੁ ਰਾਗ ਸੁਰੰਗੜੇ ਆਲਾਪਤ ਸਭ ਤਿਖ ਜਾਇ॥
          -         ਰਾਗ ਨਾਦੁ ਸਭ ਸਚੁ ਹੈ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਕਹੀ ਨ ਜਾਇ॥
          -         ਰਾਗ ਨਾਦ ਸਬਦਿ ਸੋਹਣੇ ਜਾ ਲਾਗੈ ਸਹਜਿ ਧਿਆਨੁ॥
          -         ਗੁਣ ਗੋਵਿੰਦ ਗਾਵਹੁ ਸਭਿ ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਰਾਗ ਰਤਨ ਰਸਨਾ ਆਲਾਪ॥
ਰਾਗ ਤੇ ਬਾਣੀ ਦਾ ਸੰਜੋਗ ਹੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਜੀ ਹਨ। ਬਾਣੀ ਦਾ ਮੁੱਖ ਉਦੇਸ਼ ਵਿਛੜੀ ਹੋਈ ਆਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲ ਅਭੇਦ ਕਰਨਾ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਅਧਿਆਤਮਕ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤੀ ਲਈਸ਼ਬਦ ਗੁਰੂ, ਸੁਰਤਿ ਧੁਨਿ ਚੇਲਾ ਦੇ ਸਿਧਾਂਤ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਹੀ ਗ੍ਰਹਿਣ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ। ਬਾਣੀ ਉੱਪਰ ਰਾਗਾਂ ਦਾ ਅੰਕਣ ਬਾਣੀ ਦੇ ਕੀਰਤਨ ਵੱਲ ਸਿੱਧਾ ਸੰਕੇਤ ਹੈ। ਇਹ ਭਾਰਤੀ ਪਰੰਪਰਾ ਸੰਤ-ਭਗਤਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਤੋਂ ਪੂਰਵ ਵੀ ਪ੍ਰਚੱਲਿਤ ਸੀ। ਭਗਤੀ ਅੰਦੋਲਨ ਦੇ ਪੈਰੋਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਇਹ ਪ੍ਰਚਾਰ ਕਾਫੀ ਰਿਹਾ। ਸਰਗੁਣ ਤੇ ਨਿਰਗੁਣ ਭਗਤੀ ਦੇ ਸੰਤਾਂ-ਭਗਤਾਂ ਨੇ ਰਾਗਮਈ ਕੀਰਤਨ ਲਈ ਰਾਗਾਂ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਯੋਗ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਕਬੀਰ, ਸੂਰਦਾਸ, ਨਾਮਦੇਵ ਆਦਿ।
          ਸ੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦਾ ਸੰਕਲਨ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਅਰਜਨ ਦੇਵ ਜੀ ਨੇ ਕੀਤਾ। ਸ੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਸਾਬਿ ਦੀ ਸੰਪਾਦਨਾ ਸਮੇਂ ਵੀ ਰਾਗ ਨੂੰ ਆਧਾਰ ਬਣਾਇਆ ਗਿਆ। ਬਾਣੀ ਦੀ ਵੰਡ ਵੇਲੇ ਵੀ ਬਾਣੀਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਬਜਾਇ ਰਾਗ ਅਧਿਆਇਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਤਰਜੀਹ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਗਈ ਅਤੇ ਜਪੁਜੀ, ਸਵੱਈਏ, ਵਾਰਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਵਧੀਕ ਸਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ ਸਾਰੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਨੂੰ 31 ਰਾਗ ਤੇ 31 ਰਾਗ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਦਰਜ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ।
          ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਸੰਗੀਤ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰਯੁਕਤ ਰਾਗ ੩੧ ਮੁੱਖ ਰਾਗ ਸਿਰੀ, ਮਾਝ, ਗਉੜੀ, ਆਸਾ, ਗੂਜਰੀ, ਦੇਵਗੰਧਾਰੀ, ਬਿਹਾਗੜਾ, ਵਡਹੰਸ, ਸੋਰਠਿ, ਧਨਾਸਰੀ, ਜੈਤਸਰੀ, ਟੋਡੀ, ਬੈਰਾੜੀ, ਤਿਲੰਗ, ਸੂਹੀ, ਬਿਲਾਵਲ, ਗੋਂਡ, ਰਾਮਕਲੀ, ਨਟ ਨਾਰਾਇਣ, ਮਾਲੀ ਗਉੜਾ, ਮਾਰੂ, ਤੁਖਾਰੀ, ਕੇਦਾਰਾ, ਭੈਰਉ, ਬਸੰਤ, ਸਾਰੰਗ, ਮਲਹਾਰ, ਕਾਨੜਾ, ਕਲਿਆਣ, ਪ੍ਰਭਾਤੀ, ਜੈਜਾਵੰਤੀ। (ਸ੍ਰੀ ਗੁ.ਗ੍ਰੰ. ਸਾਹਿਬ, ਪੰਨਾ ੧੫੧)।
