Our next guest mix is gifted to us by a very exciting artist called Crake, whose work focuses on the queer and experimental side of techno. Having recently moved from Meanjin to Naarm, Crake recorded this mix in December last year - a time when he was having complicated emotions about living in a city he was supposed to have moved away from almost eight months beforehand. Crake says this mix is a bit slower than what he normally does, and was intended to put the club into a more deep listening experience.

"Probably contrary to what everyone else would see, I actually found the image quite serene and tranquil. I’m usually very meticulous and nitpicky when recording mixes, I can get stuck on things for ages but with the image I almost found myself in a state of ataraxia haha. You can hear it translate very much so in my song choices. There’s a lot of very warm, lush, slow building ambient tracks which I know is a massive deviation from my usual output, but it’s what I felt the image demanded of me." J. P. Budget Cuts is excited to share Portland, OR based experimental composer Bardo:Basho’s second full-length album Alinea. Alinea is meant to evoke the idea of a non-linear history. “a” meaning not/without and “Linea” a feminine embodiment of linearity. The concept is derived from a personal history and identity which feel fragmented and this motif is reflected throughout the album. Alinea incorporates eclectic compositional and timbral styles held together by ethereal vocal performances. Expansive, intimate, and hypnotic, Alinea is a meditation on vulnerability.

Kirsten Thom started performing as Bardo:Basho while studying music at the University of Puget Sound. Bardo:Basho’s work fuses classical structure with experimental signal processing to create boundless otherworldly soundscapes that range from drone to techno. Bardo:Basho has shared the stage with visionaries like Jlin, Laurel Halo, Actress, and Yu Su while performing at festivals like Decibel and Upstream or at Kremwerk’s influential Research club night.
