Vivian talks to hip-hop veteran Frauenarzt, the rap gynecologist of the Bassboxxx crew. The brash,Berlin-Tempelhof-bred rapper rose to fame in the early '00s alongside likeminded producer and rapper Manny Marc as the Atzen; the two were leaders in introducing a German audience to the sounds of Miami bass, ghettotech and Memphis rap. Despite some controversies, Frauenarzt's storied career is dappled with chart successes and high-profile collaborations that have secured him a place in Berlin's modern-day rap scene. In the second hour, we're joined by music journalists (and erstwhile Juice Mag correspondents) Ralf Theil and Julian Brimmers to discuss and play German rap from 1998 until now.

We devote this episode of Peak Time to talking about the foundational years of raving in Berlin and how techno became a part of pop culture. Joining Vivian are two longtime figureheads of the scene: Jürgen Laarmann and Mijk van Dijk. Laarmann moved to Berlin from Frankfurt in 1989 and is a longtime editor of rave zine _Frontpage_, an early partner in the Love Parade and Mayday and an ertswhile hitmaker; van Dijk is a DJ and producer since the early '90s who pioneered the early trance sound and runs the Microglobe label. Expect lots of classics and classic stories about the German Summer of Love.

Peak Time Berlin: 30 Years of Berlin Techno with Jürgen Laarmann and Mijk van Dijk

Ellen Allien started DJing in 1992, in the Wild West rave scene of Berlin immediately after the Wall fell. A native of West Berlin, she was a fixture at clubs like Tresor, E-Werk and WMF, and channels that spirit of unity and the revolutionary promise of the early rave scene in her music and DJ sets to the present day. In 1999, she started the Bpitch Control label, a home for a wide variety of electronic music flavors from the likes of Modeselektor, Paul Kalkbrenner, Ben Klock, Kiki and Dillon. We'll be talking to her about all that – plus her first release in years on someone else's label (the Take A Stand EP on Boddika's Nonplus Records). In hour two, Vivian catches up with Turkish sound sculptor Ipek Gorgun (an alumni of RBMA Tokyo 2014), who evolved from a background making her own radio-wave tapes and playing in experimental bands to making enigmatic and grand sound pieces where she carves space and dimension out of an otherworldly sonic palette.

First up on today’s show is Canadian experimental composer, musician and ambient producer Kara-Lis Coverdale. From her classical training in piano to creating vocal reverb with metal sheets in her father’s tool shed, the rural Ontario native's foray into music production and sonic experimentations began at a young age. Coverdale speaks to Vivian about playing church organ, her journey and her collaborations with the likes of Tim Hecker and LXV. She's then joined by Daniel Brandt, cofounder of electro-acoustic German ensemble Brandt Brauer Frick.

A special episode of Peak Time dedicated to the Hot Mix 5, the legendary American DJ team of Farley Funkin Keith (later known as Farley "Jackmaster" Funk), Mickey Mixin' Oliver, Ralphi Rosario, Kenny Jammin' Jason and Scott Smokin' Silz (later replaced by Julian Jumpin' Perez). Established as WBMX Chicago's resident DJs in 1981, the five quickly rose to fame with their unique and exciting turntable styles. Early adopters of the Chicago house sound, they rapidly established themselves as tastemakers in the new genre, breaking nearly every record released and exposing millions of the city's listeners to them. Vivian had the chance to spend time with Farley and Mickey in Chicago – as well as Jerome Derradji of Still Music, a Chicago House reissue label, and Ed "Get Down" Crosby, who’d been a member of house group Master C&J and released his own music via Get Down Records – and together they discuss the history and legacy of the Hot Mix 5 and Chicago house music, plus we hear snippets of archival Hot Mix 5 DJ mixes and tracks that were big at the time.

Peak Time: Chicago's Hot Mix 5 Special

English electronic musician, producer and sound artist Mark Fell has spent his career eschewing the traditional standards of club music in favor for something a little more discordant. Whether it's glitchy techno as SND (his project with Mat Steel), his mangled version of house under the Sensate Focus moniker or experiments in FM synthesis under his own name, he makes dance music on his own terms. Similarly minded, composer and cellist Okkyung Lee draws influence from noise, western classical, jazz, improvisational and Korean traditional music in her solo and collaborative releases. The two recently joined forces again to premiere a generative, multichannel piece based on Indian rhythmic structures at New York's Issue Project Room. Today's episode is helmed again by The Creative Independent's T.Cole Rachel, but we'll listen back to a conversation Vivian had with Fell and Lee ahead of the premiere.
