Huge Afrobeats star Mr Eazi also joins in to talk about taking the banku sound between Ghana, Nigeria and the world.

Live from the Sonos store in Berlin, Germany, this episode of Peak Time is about groundbreaking collaborations both new and vintage. Berlin hero Thomas Fehlmann – who's been pushing the limits of electronic music composition since the early '80s, both solo and in groups like Palais Schaumberg and the Orb – recalls the dance music atmosphere of Germany in 1988 and tells the story of his involvement in Kunstdisco 1988 (a three-week "art disco" rave installation the German Goethe Institut that was brought to Korea for the '88 Olympics in Seoul). Plus, Kristian Beyer of Âme – Berlin's electronic music heroes who run the Innervisions label with Dixon – joins non-binary dancefloor adventurer Jam "Planningtorock" Rostron to talk about their surprising collaboration on Âme's full-length debut, Dream House. That record is a diversion from peak-time bangers toward mood music; we'll also get into gender and queer politics in the club space and stretching limitations of sound and identity.

We’re live from Berlin, Germany for the 20th anniversary edition of the Red Bull Music Academy, broadcasting from the legendary Funkhaus through October 12. At the top of the show, German composer, sound designer and Ableton Live co-developer Robert "Monolake" Henke joins us to discuss From Within, an electronic composition for light and sound that he's put together with Serbian composer Marko Nikodijevic and Ensemble intercontemporain. In hour two, we talk to Red Bull Music Academy cofounders Many Ameri and Torsten Schmidt in celebration of RBMA's 20-Year anniversary.

Peak Time Berlin: Monolake and 20 Years of RBMA

Vivian talks to hip-hop veteran Frauenarzt, the rap gynecologist of the Bassboxxx crew. The brash,Berlin-Tempelhof-bred rapper rose to fame in the early '00s alongside likeminded producer and rapper Manny Marc as the Atzen; the two were leaders in introducing a German audience to the sounds of Miami bass, ghettotech and Memphis rap. Despite some controversies, Frauenarzt's storied career is dappled with chart successes and high-profile collaborations that have secured him a place in Berlin's modern-day rap scene. In the second hour, we're joined by music journalists (and erstwhile Juice Mag correspondents) Ralf Theil and Julian Brimmers to discuss and play German rap from 1998 until now.

Peak Time Berlin: German Rap Special with Frauenarzt

We devote this episode of Peak Time to talking about the foundational years of raving in Berlin and how techno became a part of pop culture. Joining Vivian are two longtime figureheads of the scene: Jürgen Laarmann and Mijk van Dijk. Laarmann moved to Berlin from Frankfurt in 1989 and is a longtime editor of rave zine _Frontpage_, an early partner in the Love Parade and Mayday and an ertswhile hitmaker; van Dijk is a DJ and producer since the early '90s who pioneered the early trance sound and runs the Microglobe label. Expect lots of classics and classic stories about the German Summer of Love.

Peak Time Berlin: 30 Years of Berlin Techno with Jürgen Laarmann and Mijk van Dijk

In 1978, record store employee Mark Reeder moved from Manchester to Berlin in pursuit of Tangerine Dream and krautrock. What happens next is chronicled in B-Movie: Lust and Sound in West Berlin, a documentary that shows the debauched Berlin of the 1980s and Reeder's work with bands like Malaria! and Die Toten Hosen (not to mention New Order and Joy Division). Reeder's work didn't stop once the Wall came down – he founded the MFS label (kickstarting the careers of trance greats like Paul Van Dyk, Mijk van Dijk and Cosmic Baby) and has released his own music, notably a recent album called Mauerstadt. Reeder offers a window into the shifting and debaucherous Berlin music scene from the late 1970s until now.

Christiane F. is best known for her contribution to the book and movie "Wir Kinder vom Bahnhof Zoo," documenting her life on the streets of Berlin in '70s and '80s. We talk to Robbie Fields of Posh Boy Records about working with Christiane on the Gesundheit EP in the early 1980s. We're then joined by Berlin-based journalist Laura Aha, to discuss exciting new music coming out of Berlin.

Peak Time: Live from Berlin with FM Einheit, Mona Mur & En Esch of KMFDM

A special episode of Peak Time dedicated to the Hot Mix 5, the legendary American DJ team of Farley Funkin Keith (later known as Farley "Jackmaster" Funk), Mickey Mixin' Oliver, Ralphi Rosario, Kenny Jammin' Jason and Scott Smokin' Silz (later replaced by Julian Jumpin' Perez). Established as WBMX Chicago's resident DJs in 1981, the five quickly rose to fame with their unique and exciting turntable styles. Early adopters of the Chicago house sound, they rapidly established themselves as tastemakers in the new genre, breaking nearly every record released and exposing millions of the city's listeners to them. Vivian had the chance to spend time with Farley and Mickey in Chicago – as well as Jerome Derradji of Still Music, a Chicago House reissue label, and Ed "Get Down" Crosby, who’d been a member of house group Master C&J and released his own music via Get Down Records – and together they discuss the history and legacy of the Hot Mix 5 and Chicago house music, plus we hear snippets of archival Hot Mix 5 DJ mixes and tracks that were big at the time.

Peak Time: Chicago's Hot Mix 5 Special

We're headed south of the equator to Brazil, where soundsystem culture is being pushed forward via the homegrown sounds of baile funk and tecno brega. Vincent Rosenblatt — whose photographs transmit the explosive energy of these scenes — joins Vivian on air to talk about the unique force that is Rio de Janeiro's funk scene: Its creativity, individuality and the way the music and culture intersects with the complex politics and economics of the favelas. Rosenblatt then guides us north to the Amazonian city of Belem, where melodic love songs of the 1960s have morphed into a high-speed electronic style called tecno brega, played by generations-old soundsystems that resemble giant buffalo and spaceships. Join us on this wild ride, complete with proibidão and putaria new and old, from the likes of MC Dede, MC Livinho, DJ Byano and Deize Tigrona.

The MC and producer Barrington DeVaughn Hendricks aka JPEGMAFIA aka Peggy is known for his sharp-tongued raps and brutal beats. Born in New York to Jamaican parents, he spent his formative years in Alabama before enlisting in the Air Force; returning Stateside he moved to Baltimore, drawn by the city's thriving underground music scene, and that's where JPEGMAFIA was born. Vivian welcomes Jpegmafia to the studio to discuss his wild journey, the internet and what inspires him.

Heading eastward, we hear from NYC DFA affiliate Juan MacLean, then its off UK where we examine the effects of dubstep, hardcore and UK garage on house and techno with London's DJ Skream and Bristol’s techno-bass technician Hodge. We finish things off with Berlin's Ellen Allien and France's The Hacker.
