It offers assistance with basic needs like food and personal essentials and helps new residents with finding jobs and housing, with learning English and finding services they need and with job training and finding their places in the community.

Steve Maurice, CMC Director and Becca Schwartz, Associate Director came into the WORT studio to talk with Gil Halsted about what the CMC does and how people in need can access services as well as how community members can volunteer to provide help.

On Nov. 5, voters in Dane County will select a new county executive for the first time since 2011 when Joe Parisi assumed the office. Parisi stepped down this past May with a year left on his current term and called a special election to replace him. After an initial election on Aug. 13, two candidates advanced to a November runoff: state Senator Melissa Agard, and RCC Sexual Violence Center Executive Director Dana Pellebon. Last week, local non-profits hosted the candidates at a south side forum to discuss some of the campaign’s most pressing issues. Reporter Jess Miller has the story.

Dane County executive candidates discuss racial and social justice issues in public forum

In early August, the 2024 Legislative Council Study Committee on Sandhill Cranes, met for the first time. The committee is tasked with recommending legislation to manage the sandhill crane population. They have heard reports on the crane population, reviewed damage claims, and explored mitigation options.  The options include treating seeds to prevent cranes from eating them, paying farmers for lost crops, and allowing a crane hunt. The Cap Times reports that the yearly damage caused by sandhill cranes is estimated at $1.6 million. 

On today's show, host Douglas Haynes brings the conversation to the airways with guests David Drake and Rich Beilfuss. Drake is an UW-Extension Wildlife Specialist and Professor in the Department of Forest and Wildlife Ecology at UW-Madison. Beilfuss is the president and CEO International Crane Foundation. They join us to discuss the sandhill crane population growth and their impact. 

We hear from several listeners throughout the hour.

VIVIAN – the artist duo comprised of Alana Rolfe and Timo Massa formed in Fort Collins, Colorado. 2020 saw the release of "The Warped Glimmer", the pair's debut full length album, charting #89 on College Radio Charts. VIVIAN explores hip hop beats, psychedelic textures, sultry vocals and glitchy details to create the esthetic some have referred to as "mushroom-pop". Their EP, "Snapsounds vol 1: March in the Marigny" released September 2021 preludes the release of their 2nd full length album, "Pressure Makes Diamonds" upcoming in 2022.
