Few could have predicted a meteoric rise up the ladder for Austria's 2016 BURN Residency finalist Ayman Awad.

It all started with quiet self-confidence living in Egypt. Shrugging off jeers and doubts from friends about the potential career path, in 1997 Ayman's dream blossomed after picking up his first DJ Mag. The iconic Carl Cox, then then voted as the world's Number 1 DJ, turned out to be the man of inspiration, giving Ayman an incentive to further his hopes of stardom.
Three years of living and travelling Egypt, at the turn of the millennium Ayman moved to Austria in what proved to be fruitful. He gained success playing at many different clubs and events but had an unignorable desire for the glory of the industry's destiny, with eyes firmly fixed on the White Island. 

Fast forward to 2016, and the Austrian is living testament in pursuing a lifelong goal with hard work. Quickly flying through the competition's bootcamp, Ayman found his efforts rewarded and his eyes starstruck with the London DJ Carl Cox being his mentor at this years Ibiza's BURN Residency competition.

Here's the story so far by the man himself:

“Ibiza is the Mecca of Electronic music, you get inspired and you listen to a lot of different styles.
DJs from all over the world come to Ibiza to experience the coming together of many nationalities on one dance floor. I feel this is the true spirit of Ibiza and and a major factor on why I decided to be in this years competition.
I'm so thrilled to have this amazing opportunity. So many unforgettable  things have happened over the last 5 weeks. Each day we've learned from the very best, talking to key DJs, producers, club owners, managers and more in the industry.

In our lectures and master classes, we gained all the vital information every DJ should know from the very best, lectures with John Digweed, Carl Cox, Miguel Campbell, Jamal Edwards, Uner, Nick Curly, Darius Syrossian, Tony Andrew, Yann Pissenem, David Vincent and more.

After the announcing the 3 finalists of the competition and I'm one from the lucky 3. My dream is now becoming a reality, and I have to pinch myself when I'm playing at picturesque locations such as Cafe Mambo.
I'm so excited to be apart of Savanna and Sankeys, with gigs at rocking Thursday nights at Privilege with Solid Groozes. We also broadcast our weekly radio show every Wedneday at Ibiza Sonica.

Promising times are ahead for this star, with the vision of becoming an Ibiza Resident almost on his fingertips.

1.      Hi Mihai!  Thanks for checking in with We Are Machine.  What was your first experience with electronic music?  

My musical journey began with my first residency at the local club with my best friend in our hometown. After I finished high school I moved to Bucharest to study.  The DJing hobby was put on hold, but after two years I started to make music.
 
2.      Which producers inspired you as you began developing your own sound? How?

There are so many producers that inspired me over the years. Early influences were Moby, Dennis Ferrer, Lee Burridge, Thomas Melchior, Matthew Dekay, Mihai Popoviciu, S.A.M. (Mandar), Sascha Dive, Archie Hamilton, So Inagawa, iO (Mulen), Tuccillo, Gorje Hewek & Izhevski. More recently, Janeret, East End Dubs, Swoy, Lauren Ritter, YokoO, Cosmjn, Lizz, Teluric, Adrianho.
 
3.      What was the turning point when electronic music switched from being a hobby to a career?

During the past years I have really focused on music production and finding my own style. Now I need to work more to achieve this dream.
 
4.      So what can you tell us about the mix?  How did you go about recording it? 

The mix is a combination of styles between dreamy sounds and deep-dubby tracks always with a groove attitude. On my podcasts I always try to tell a little story. I recorded it using my laptop and a mixer. I put very emotional and groovy tracks- not so dark for this podcast, and I hope you’ll like this.
 
5.      Your recent Refuge of Dream EP as Celestial Strangers was released on Akbal Music. What can you tell us about the Celestial Strangers project?   

We started the project inspired by Lee Burridge & Matthew Dekay’s All Day I Dream parties and from our common passion for melodic music. Flavius (Obscure Promises) who is an amazing producer started a track inspired by one of Matthew’s songs. He showed it to me and from that point we started the project called “Celestial Strangers”.
 
6.      As we head into 2018, what’s in the pipeline for you re: gigs and releases?

First, a very Happy New Year to you! In the New Year, I will try to have more gigs here in my country, Romania and also outside. I’m also working on my solo project at the moment because I want to release my first EP this year.

1. Hi Edwin! Thanks for checking in with We Are Machine! Where & when was this mix recorded, and what makes it a good representation of your overall sound?

Thanks for having me! The mix was recorded at my studio in Amsterdam, but I tried to capture the vibe of a club set. When DJing I always enjoy playing a mix of house and techno, and just like when I am playing in a club I created a few peaks and some deeper moments. It’s basically a club night compressed into a one hour mix.
 
2. Joris Voorn included your new dub of Steve Bug & Cle’s “It’s Time” out today on Poker Flat in his set at Grand Palais in Paris for Cercle. What is your working dynamic like with Joris as you co-run the Rejected and Green imprints together?

It was great to see my remix for Steve and Cle being played at such a beautiful location in Paris.
Joris and I have been friends for more than 20 years and we started Rejected back in 2006 to release our own music. Nowadays my main focus is on Rejected. Next to label management, I am also doing the A&R, although I always like to check with Joris for new releases. We are actually working on special project to celebrate the label’s 12th anniversary. More info on that soon!
Green is Joris’ own label and he is responsible for the A&R, and I am the label manager.
 
3. What keeps Rejected and Green exciting for you? What kind of sound are you looking for in the music you sign these days?

Releasing new music is always exciting. It’s not easy to find good music as the amount of demos we get sent is overwhelming. But I guess that’s part of the challenge. With Rejected we focus on club music. We just signed a great new release from youANDme which is coming out in August.
The music on Green is a bit more diverse, but we still keep the club in mind. Joris just released his new single, “District Seven” from his upcoming album. We also have an exciting new release from Zoo Brazil and Mark Fanciulli under their Test Tone alias coming out in July.
 
4. You’ve been a DJ for over 20 years having played at clubs like Fabric and Panorama Bar and at festivals like Awakenings and Mysteryland. What’s been the key to your longevity?

It sounds cliché, but my passion for house and techno keeps me going after all these years. I enjoy music now more than ever. I always considered myself more of a DJ than a producer, but nowadays I really enjoy spending time in the studio. Especially since I started taking piano lessons again. For me it really helps with the creative process in the studio.
Naturally I still enjoy DJing very much, and I am very excited to play the Joris Voorn and Friends stage this Sunday at Awakenings Festival!
