This is our contribution to a charity compilation of electronic music, raising money & awareness for Médecins Sans Frontières.
 
Médecins Sans Frontières - also known as ‘Doctors Without Borders’ - is an impartial, independent, and neutral organisation that provide medical and humanitarian aid wherever needed, across the globe.

With the current civil war in Syria, much of the media focus has been on the political aspects, often forgetting the tens of thousands of victims and refugees.  Médecins Sans Frontières, and their volunteers, are still on the ground in the region providing aid.

It is available on a 'pay what you choose' basis - you can download for free or any amount you decide at http://balkanvinyl.bandcamp.com, and we will donate here (and claim gift aid) on your behalf or you can go to http://www.justgiving.com/musicsansfrontiers and donate directly (and also leave a message if you wish).
 
All profits go directly to MSF. All of the artists have contributed their music for free.
Although Balkan Vinyl usually concentrate on physical releases, this compilation is entirely digital to ensure as much money as possible goes to charity.

Music Sans Frontiers (English spelling of ‘Frontiers’ deliberate) was chosen as the name, as the compilation does not stick to one genre of music (unlike the ‘Acid Relief’ compilation in 2011, which focussed mainly on TB303-led music) and instead we asked the artists to contribute tracks with no restrictions on style.

Sovereign System (submerse Remix)

Featuring the superb remix by submerse, an esteemed producer with a distinct and recognisable sound that traverses beats, instrumental hip-hop and electronica. Amidst a plenitude of productions, submerse has seen support emerge from influential media titans such as Pitchfork, FACT Magazine, XLR8R, BBC and has played prestigious events such as Sonar Sound Tokyo, Low End Theory and Boiler Room.

Sovereign System (Krimson Remix)

The second remix of Sovereign System comes courtesy of Krimson, the winner of Echaskech’s recent remix competition. A French, self-taught producer and multi-instrumentalist with a penchant for classes house sounds, Krimson recently had his independent release ‘Hot-shot’ featured on Diplo and Friends on BBC Radio1 Xtra, resulting in a deal with L.A. based label Perfect Driver, for a release date sometime summer 2014.

Telomere (Magic Panda Remix)

Magic Panda, aka Jamie Robson, is a lo-fi electronic music producer from the distant and mystic hinterland of Norfolk, UK, specialising in melancholic, ethereal soundscapes and uplifting fairy tale anthems. 2011-13 has seen Magic Panda developing his live set up and enjoying high profile support slots with the likes of Luke Abbott, Ricardo Tobar, The Portico Quartet, Mount Kimbie and DMX Krew as well as playing his own shows in Madrid, Holland and Belgium.

Voyager (Seyr Remix)

The final EP track is another remix, this time of album track “Voyager” and coming from Seyr, a new electronic duo hailing from the south of England. The pair have been working on their first collection of tracks entitled “Nights Without.”

For the second installment in Kraddy's Anthems of the Hero remix project, he decided to tap the collective power of UK trio Echaskech. For a devilishly unique twist on "Holy Avenger," the Brits glitched, stretched, and warbled the guitar through a talk box effect that's less Peter Frampton and more circuit bent Furby (look it up, kids). For all those predicting a standard drop, we ask "assumptions make a what out of who?" A total killer drum 'n' bass line at the bottom end of the BPM spectrum rattles and rolls with the waves of bass, setting up a second drop that really snaps the legs off from under any preconceived notions about this 7-minute opus. There's no doubt this Kraddy collab will raise the profile of this stunningly witty team from across the pond.

Back To The Sun (Echaskech Remix)

Composed for the Cities and Memory project, this piece is based around field recordings made from a walk deep into the ancient forests of Yakushima, Japan. 

The project requests field recordings of a particular place, then a reimagined version of those field recordings in any style you wish. In this instance the recordings capture nature and bird calls from the lush subtropical forest alongside the sound of our car tyres beating a path down from the mountainous forest.

For the reimagined piece shards of electronic modulations mimic the bird calls but also convey a sense of the impressive intensity of natural growth and activity in the forest. Lore has it that the Japanese believed the gods lived in this forest - something easy to imagine when you are there. Brooding pads and an otherworldly melody are added in attempt to convey this.  Modern electronics are juxtaposed with the ancient reality of the forest - similar to the sound of the car against the natural forest sounds and a reminder that whilst modernity has encroached upon and destroyed such habitats, the two can also live in side by side.

Some 15 years or so ago we produced drum and bass under the ill advised name of 'Juicy Boot' (don't ask - still no idea). We plugged away at making a melodic style of d&b that was big at the time. Our set up sat in the corner of a flat on Cally Road, then a garage in Hackney. It consisted of old hifi speakers, a Kawai K4 synth, a Novation bass station and a PC running Cakewalk with zero plug ins. Having cobbled a few tunes together that we thought would BLOW BUKEM'S MIND, we touted them anywhere we could from doorstepping Fabio at Kiss FM to hand him a DAT to responding to ads in Loot. Eventually a nice chap called Martin got in touch saying he wanted to release our stuff on his 'Straight and Narrow' imprint. A white label was pressed up and the rest wasn't history - although we did hear our tunes played out on pirates and got to DJ alongside a few d&b luminaries along the way....good times!   

Digging into the Echaskech vinyl vaults the other day revealed the long forgotten vinyl.....this is from the B side of that release complete with comments added for your amusement and entertainment....

BUNKR released his debut album The Initiation Well earlier in 2019 on the VLSI label. 

Operating on the hazy peripherals of 'dance' music utilizing the familiar concepts and components of techno, electronica and ambient BUNKR enslaved dust-coated synthesizers, dilapidated drum machines and rusted FX boxes to produce “a brilliantly diverse collection of nine finely-crafted electronic opuses” (Furtherdot.com).

And now, thanks to a bunch of like-minded sonic explorers, we make another journey into the depths of the fabled Initiation Well with eight remixes which seek to uncover the purpose behind this mythical place.
