Description: In the final audio track, we've mixed the audio and the mistakes and breath sounds have been edited out by us.

We created a set of ears (pinnae) from sculpting clay to attempt binaural recording. We used two Rode NT-55s, positioned and angled in order to fool the brain into perceiving the audio as belonging to a 3-D space. The room recording features a friend and I talking (mostly) nonsense with music playing in the background. We feel the test was mostly successful, and I'm looking forward to refining the model ear setup in order to make it mobile. 

Binaural recording is fascinating. Essentially, your brain uses the time difference between sound arriving at one ear and the other to determine direction. The human head also cuts off some higher frequencies. Simulating these conditions by positioning model pinnae the right distance apart and separating the audio signals that arrive into the mikes can create incredibly realistic results. Go ahead and search online for some binaural recordings. Trick your brain!
