1986 - Drummer, John Steele, wanting to showcase his songwriting, guitar, and vocal abilities, started writing songs, geared towards his disdain for politics while incorporating dark fantasy concepts. The Systum's, founding members, John Steele (Electric Frankenstein, Genöcide) and fellow bandmate, Frankie Fender, then formed Voice of Doom, an experiment in a punk/metal hybrid form, influenced by early metal masters, Black Sabbath and Motörhead, as well as the punk-inspired Misfits and Black Flag. Steele moved from drums to vox/guitar while Ricky Blades and Samhain's London May were soon brought on for the bass and drum slots. After playing shows, which included the legendary CBGB, they recorded the now, highly sought after, “Faith is Torn” 7” EP in the extremely limited blue vinyl pressing. Steele and company then recorded another four-song EP which was never officially released until 2018. (Only a single 12” acetate exists, which its whereabouts is currently unknown.) Voice of Doom would disband in 1988.

2014 - Somewhere in NJ, on the 25th anniversary of their demise, VOD reunites to record five new songs, this time citing their early punk influences as their sole inspiration. They combine the release with a remastered version of their 1987 “Faith is Torn” EP and titled the whole thing, “VOD III” The new lineup featured original bassist Ricky Blades, who also laid tracks on VOD’s “Faith Is Torn” as well as drummer, Karl C. Scott and former Nasty Ammunition/Holeshot bandmate, Evil Heim for lead vox. Shortly after recording, the original bassist decides obscurity is a better-suited activity for him, and the new drummer drives to his death in Northern California.

NJ Horror Punk band Voice of Doom are back after their well-received comeback of 2014. “This EP could not have come at a better time” according to Evil Heim, frontman for the band says. “It doesn’t have to be Halloween for some VOD” he followed. “We saw no better way to celebrate what would have been Karl’s 59th birthday than to release this in his honor, on his birthday.” Following a 2015 that saw a lineup change caused by the retirement of their original bassist and the untimely death of their drummer, VOD regrouped and once again locked away in the studio, bring us “Scared to Death”, a four-song EP that stays true to their horror punk roots and boasts some slick, cool packaging to boot. This is the follow up to the 2014 release ‘VOD III’, which featured 5 new songs, along with the re-release of their original 1987 EP “Faith is Torn”.

"During the late-night recording session for this Scared to Death EP, the band noticed a greenish orb hovering above the tree line just outside the studio. While the band was unnerved by its ominous presence, time and money constraints couldn't allow the band to be distracted by the strange event. Inside the studio, they could still hear the metallic, whirling sound that emanated from it, which at times sounding as though it was inside their heads, and temporarily rendered some of the members, paralyzed. The orb’s eerie sounds can be heard in theSE recordings, despite the engineer’s efforts to suppress them."

After playing only a few live shows in 2015, concentrating mainly on studio work, early 2016 saw a new release titled “Scared To Death.” Now, for Halloween of 2016, they are back with a new 6 song CD titled “Screams In Space” and will be playing their first live show in over a year to celebrate. This new CD continues the band's aggressive approach to punk and rock, all the while keeping it fun and frightening, lyrically. For Voice of Doom, it’s Halloween every day!

2017 - Because of Voice of Doom's growing popularity in Europe, the band set out, on a short tour of German punk clubs to which it's soundboard recordings were released on Halloween, titled “Voice of Doom - Haunting Deutschland”.

Quite the irony, the newest release from VOD was wrapped up on the date of February 3, 2020, which is the traditional celebration day of the patron saint of the throat, Saint Blaise. The band in its inception, back in 1986, cited influences as “equal parts Black Flag and Black Sabbath” this monster has the influences of both, tossing in a little Slayer for fun. Sonically, it’s without a doubt, the band’s “heaviest” sounding release (thanks mainly to legendary British producer Robin Black). Lyrical themes range from theological obscurity to cultish horror (a staple of most Voice of Doom recordings) “It’s about as close as you can get to side 2 of Paranoid and side 2 of My War at the same time” according to engineer Kevin Lacatena. Bob McCreary of bloodmakesnoise.org. says “Hearing this actually scared me!” - Voice of Doom began working on this album right after their live in Germany, “Haunting Deutschland” CD was released. Two advanced singles, ‘Toxic Swamp’ and ‘Cousin of Death’ preceded the full-length release, and after two years in the making, The Mighty VOD, in their sixth year back from the dead, present...
