Best Of The Word #6 (Feb.-March 2014)

In one of the most dramatic episodes of Memory Lane, Roger tells a story of love, divorce, & drug addiction. Roger came from a well-off family, & he is very aware that his trajectory, as well as his race, played a part in how his particular addiction story played out. For Roger, who was working as a nurse at the time, was prescribed Hydromorphone after an injury (which is commonly known under its German Brand name Dilaudid). Within 6 weeks of this prescription, Roger was shooting up Hydromorphone at dangerously high levels. And then he was caught. 

Listen to this extremely compelling edition of Memory Lane to hear one of the quickest falls I have yet to learn of into the pit of addiction. Roger is forthright & now can look back years later, but his addiction , he says, destroyed everything in his life. He is only now, almost a decade later, being able to reconstruct what addiction took from him.

Share this story of addiction with someone who is in danger of developing this illness!

Like most people who become R&B singers in the United States, Faith Evans received her musical training in the black church. She was the female R&B singer tasked with delivering love ballads for Puff Daddy's up-start Bad Boy label in 1995, which was founded after his break with Uptown. "Faith", the singer's first album delivered many slow-burning, passionate, atmospheric songs in a sound that is commonly today attributed to Aaliyah. Faith Evans received much less attention than Aaliyah, but had a number of hits from her first album in her home country (the US). Safiya & I continue through the Torah, from the Persian Empire, back to the 'Holy Land', where the Kingdom of Judah exists under Assyrian authority, & the Kingdom of Israel "is but a distant memory. We comb through books of prophecy, where the presence is women is not only non-existent, but when it does appear, is completely allegorical. The only 'woman' we encounter in this period is the female personification of the 'Israeli'-Hebraic nation. 

The exit musick, J. Cole's "False Prophets", is apt -- With a dearth of women, we examine the actual prophecy given by the male prophets -(Hosea, Isaiah etc) and we find them utterly lacking. Unlike with some earlier books, the time between the books being written & the events that they describe is very short. So short that *while being written*, the political situation changes, rendering the 'prophecy' purportedly given by these books fairly useless. In some cases, namely the book purportedly written by Isaiah, the prophecy given is more and more inaccurate as the book goes on.

We also examine the changing political situation of this period, with the two poles of the Hebrew world -- Cosmopolitan Persia & the back-water Holy Land -- struggling for control of the tradition. 

All in all, women are nearly invisible. As Safiya notes, prostitutes were the only women in Hebrew society during this period that were given any modicum of free movement or latitude with regard to their lives, though the practice was not approved of in general, & the Hebrews had abolished the 'shrine prostitute' position years before.

Best New Musick March 2017 (Remy Ma Destroys Nicki Minaj, Katy Perry, Turkish Pop!)

Groups Cherish and TLC are back, as well as newer R&B diva Kayla Brianna continuing her run of singles.  And we will finish with our Best Song of the month from rapper 3d Na’tee. The recorded musick industry continues to change rapidly and with haste, as every song featured in today’s show is from an independent label or a self-released project. Group Cherish are one of countless R&B artists/groups that fell through the cracks in the major label system, and a decade after their last hit they are back, in a reformulated set-up. They are preceded by new artist, the British black barbie Camilla Destiny, with a love-anthem toward the Sunset Strip in California. After them is an artist who first attracted attention in 2015 with her release “Honest,” Kayla Brianna, who has been serving at least one great single a year. 90's nostalgia is undeniably running high, so the two living members of TLC have certainly picked the right time to come back with a solo single, after a hugely successful 'go fund me' campaign. We finish up with 3d Na'tee, the winner of last year's Jakob Musick Music Awards' Best Song of 2016 award. Will her songs from this year be just as amazing?
