“I met Ursula Vaughan Williams in the last years of her life and considered myself lucky to have this direct link to her husband, whose music I have performed and recorded so much.  Even in her last years it was clear to see that she was a woman of great passion and lust for life.  I think this comes across clearly in her poetry.  I was so pleased to have been presented with an anthology of her work as it was immediately clear, as it must have been to her husband, that many would suit a musical setting.  There is already such subtle, sensuous music in the words on the page.

“Meanwhile I was delighted to resume my acquaintance with the three singers who make up Voice.  I had met them first when they were members of the Oxford Girls Choir and had followed their progress as they entered the music profession, bumping into them individually at sessions from time to time.  To see that they had formed a vocal ensemble, drawing directly on the skills they had learned back at Oxford, was hugely exciting.  All three singers know my writing style of old; I sought to challenge them further but also to add to their repertoire and support them in their future together as a group.”

7. La Nobia

Written for Voice trio by composer Marcus Davidson in 2010. Marcus has since written three more pieces for Voice which will feature on their forthcoming album March 2013, including a re-recording of Angelica.

The lyrics are taken from a translation of a Serbian poem. The musical style is inspired by the music Voice sings- Hildegard of Bingen medieval chant and Eastern European folk music.

Batonebo

This piece is performed in the round, with the performers moving around the circle at different times, kneeling, sitting and standing representing different stages through life. At around 6 mins the effect of putting your hand over your mouth while singing is used to muffle the sound.

This piece was commissioned as part of "Megaphones for the Unheard"  -  a project exploring the voice of women through music and poetry.

At the heart of Megaphones for the Unheard is a poem by the talented poet Jasmine Cooray. Taking inspiration from female musical figures, such as the Iranian musician, poet and political activist, Gissoo Shakeri, German medieval abbess, Hildegard of Bingen, and Scottish percussionist Evelyn Glennie, Cooray’s words bring these women’s experiences to life. Acclaimed British composers Helen Chadwick, Ayanna Witter-Johnson, Stevie Wishart, and Marcus Davidson develop the core Megaphones theme in their own individual way with new commissions for a cappella trio, Voice.
