Midnight Screams

Wandered down a bloodstained path one night
Heard distant cries and wails cut short
And diminish
Unfavored souls disappearing out of sight

Hoped they wouldn't see me through the trees
As acts of God and man became as one
Divine decisions
Whose consequence makes life fall to its knees
Out of breath

The stench of hecatomb writhed through the air
How were they to escape when they were
All the things they seemed to hate
Everything they feared, despised
But I saw it crumble before my eyes
As trees crashed down
And heavens roared
And everything began to burn
Putrid corpses fueled the pyre
Spirits danced and victors tried
To get away from what they'd done
And everything they thought they won
Thought they won
Won, everything they lost

Wandered down a bloodstained path one night
Thought I saw a figure

It turned around and vanished out of sight
