Circa 2008 - Noisy politically-drive hardware sequences / synth techno by Split Horizon, accompanied by a series of short essays and an informative interview about the motives and general perspectives behind the music.  A central figure of Detroit’s From the Gut collective (2003-2010), Split Horizon launched Void Tactial Media in 2006 to organize electronic music events and record release that are both socially exciting and also intellectually critical of its own artistic output and the political environments in which is it being produced. If anyone could be ranked as the godfather of industrial breakcore in Detroit, it would be Justin Ivey.  The head of the iconic Detroit label Low Res, known for early releases of Bombardier, Snares, and Abelcain among others, Adjust made a beachhead that rippled out into many of us.  Yet his own must has only seen a handful of releases, so you only really know how he rocked the party if you were there, in a Detroit loft, listening to him tear up the soundsystem late night, with his unique hybrid of Detroit electro and noisy breakcore.  We talked about getting a release out several years, ago, we almost didn't come through as well - difficulty on getting the right album artwork and the ups and downs of running a record label conspired to delay this one almost into non-existence.  But Void Tactical wasn't about to leave this one behind.  Complete with a solid design by Sansculotte, our friends in Berlin, and a bonus mix available for download or on disc, we are happy to give Adjust the respect he deserves for literally years of work wielding the low resolution mindset of Detroit to a honed presentation.  Put this one on and imagine a type of Detroit warehouse party you probably never knew existed, and then look up the Low Res catalog for the evidence.

I remember walking across to Division Street sometime around 2008, hearing this otherworldly howling echo across the Eastern Market.  When I came in the door, it was David Cole, Metria, piloting his Nord Lead into songs of the post-industrial era.  In the years since then, I’ve seen Metria perform fewer times that I would have expected, but it has often been a similar story: an initial disorientation, an unexpected exposure to a sound, following by the recognition that here is one of our own, speaking a story of our time in Detroit through electronics and noise.  

Void Tactical Media 004 archives one of those moments, this time from our party Excession in 2011, organized primarily by Key.  Landing at North End Studios on a cold December night, we had pro sound from Jim Gibbons but no heat, just people showing up in a raw Detroit space to witness beats and distortion.  Metria as an opener that night, and played short - something like 20 minutes.  But when the set ended, Dave had taken us to a place that we hadn’t expected just yet.  A tempo-warping, hard broken beat industrial build was answered with yells and cheers at the early hour of 10:30pm.  You might even say the rest of us performing felt almost unnecessary.  

A few years later, out of the blue, our friend Andy shows up with recordings of the event.  No one remembered recordings even happening.  Turns out Metria’s set fits almost perfectly onto 12” vinyl.  Key revisited her original flier art to work an amazing jacket design.  Final 2 color silk screening on matte black paper by Angie Coe at Ocelot Print Shop in Detroit.  It’s not your usual 4 track selection, this time what we have is a piece of our history, as it was written.

For most of 2009, Void hosted an event at the Foundation in Detroit known as Breakcore Pancakes.  We aimed to present music in a different context - during the day, as a background to alternative tech skillsharing, and with coffee.  Of course all of this was happening alongside our other parties and events, making this one of the peak periods for Void Tactical in Detroit.  This recording of Jstat is one of the best from those events, and oddly the only existing recording of any of Jstat's many excellent sets from this period.   Now it's 2012 and Jstat is hot to make his comeback after almost 2 years of musical silence, as he hits LA in a under a week.   So clearly, we're now very excited to make this recording available to the public as both a slice of our history and a look to what's in store.  Jstat is one of our best, and it's high time you got to know him.

The Activator ep showcases some of Split Horizon's newer material, opening a window into how his sound has been mutating since earlier days of hard broken beats.  The title track kicks an unyielding broken drum line against weaving, resonant synths and cleaner, more refined production style.  Interflow manifests as a fluid, morphing force of thick bass that crescendos to a noisy finale.  Further expanding Void Tactical's broken bass style, Activator sums up the last year of Split Horizon's live sets and points outward to the future.

FS010 - WMX - PHYSICS OF LIGHT

2013 is ticking along, and Void Tactical's Broken Bass is back on the scene, announcing Pulsific Planets debut release.  Sure, it's a new name the man himself hit the scene as Selector Catalogue and a From the Gut collaborator back in the Detroit years.  An old hand in Void Tactical, and the mastering engineer of our very first record, he is also the owner/operator over at Reject Records (Ann Arbor, MI).  An amazingly detailed and versatile producer, in the Asteroid EP he presents his next equation, melding the intricate programming of Breakcore with dance floor vibe of Broken Beat.  The result is explosive, and provides us with three mixes of hard broken acid core taken to maximum splinter level, a unique perspective with deep roots in sound of the Detroit Metro Area.  Asteroid M is the DJ friendly slammer, complete with mix-in and mix-out segments for moving these staccato beats in and out of other tracks.  The original Asteroid plays 2nd, supplying the full epic statement of slow build zooming from outer to inner space.  And that's not all either, an expert level acid mix is available only for download if you spring for the fully quality waves at bandcamp.  Composed, mixed, and mastered by one man alone - whether you know him as Pulsific Planet, Selector Cataloge, or Anti-Cheat the situation is undeniable, we've got one skilled craftsman on our hands here.

The four tracks on the record have been honed and refined during countless live performances over the last year, and are served up in final mixes that are versatile enough to be reworked by capable DJs - yet strong enough to stand on their own.
