Felt like hollering, so I recorded myself singing this old folk ballad acapella. Listen as I pause to remember the next verses while my upstairs neighbor stomps around and yells.

This is a rough recording of me singing "The Maid Freed From The Gallows" (Child Ballad #95) accompanied by a shruti box.

There are many, many versions of this song from many, many places with many, many titles -- Great Britain has several scattered versions; Finland has a version, so does Russia. The song is likely at least 300 years old. Some popular variants have been recorded by Lead Belly, Odetta, Led Zeppelin, Willie Watson (who has one of my favorite versions). I learned this version from Tim Eriksen.
