On September 1, 2015, Philos Records will release The Darkness Before Dawn, the latest LP from hiphop/electro producer Daily Bread – his first album since 2014’s debut Out There, which EDMsauce.com declared “an incredible, groovy LP that soothes your soul” and Net Frequency TV explained “oozes of positive energy and good vibes that will put a smile on your face from beginning to end”.

Produced and arranged solely by record collector and beatsmith, Rhett Whatley, The Darkness Before Dawn was recorded in Atlanta over the cold, wet winter and spring of 2014/15. This project features some of Daily Bread’s darkest material.

“I was really focused on bringing some of the sadder, depression-dripped tones out of my record collection with this LP” Whatley explains. The songs tell tales of love lost, never-ending rain storms, late night encounters, and restless minds. I really made something that has a lot of life in it.”

Night & Day

My mom used to play Elton John’s music all the time. I grew up on it. His songs played a large part of my musical childhood. In fact, I’m told that the first song I ever sang was, “B-B-B-Bennie and the Jets.” Having not listened to much of Elton’s music in recent years, I found myself truly inspired having gone to see the movie, Rocketman. The music brought back intense feelings from both my childhood and where I find myself in the present moment. I immediately went into the studio and started work on this remix.

As a musician, I’ve always related deeply to the original song which was inspired by the 1951 science fiction short, The Rocket Man, by Ray Bradbury. The story depicts the complex relationship between technology and psychology, and in particular, an astronaut's love of the stars. A man ventures into space for three months at a time and returns to earth for only a few short days to see his wife and son, deeply torn between his love of space and his family. The song imagines what his long adventures, while filled with loneliness, would be like. I've always viewed this as a metaphor for the life of an artist. 

This remix makes a great precursor to the release of my next full-length album, Setting Fire To The Stars. (Coming this fall). It's a sci-fi themed record that vibes on the darker side of our feelings. Thoughts of anxiety, depression, loneliness, and social isolation are recurring ideas in both the lyrics and music found on this album. Subjects that many of us are all too familiar with. 

So here's my remix of Rocket Man for you. I hope you catch a new vibe off my interpretation of the original classic.

After long anticipation, Vokab Kompany is prepared to unveil its first record since 2015, Small Viktories, on Gravitas Recordings. Produced by bass music pioneer JPOD, “Like That” packs a powerful punch out of the gate that is full of soulful hip-hop to make you want to sing. Produced by Megan Hamilton, “Fabtastik” hastens the pace with her signature catchy grooves and funky sax riffs. Equipped with a thumpin’ groove by producer AHEE, listeners are soon warned it’s going to take a whole life to “Get It Right.” A love story has its genesis in “Classic” through a decelerated alto, as deep affections are proclaimed towards the beloved. Gangster rap legend Mitchy Slick joins in on “30 Stores Up,” produced by chillhop mastermind Cloudchord, as they look into a past life through melodious house tunes. In collaboration with Crush Effect, “MVP” continues the love story with high-energy as listeners are welcomed into the inner thoughts of the captivated admirer. Infiltrating a state of euphoric bliss, Lily Fangz and MIDIcinal invite the duo to “Coffee & Chill.” Mitchy Slick and Alfred Howard engage in deep commentary on contemporary politics in “PoliTricks” that simultaneously represents hope for change and inspires people to take care of their neighbor. Rounding the album out at nine, Vokab Kompany offers an instrumental version of "30 Stories Up" to provide an emotional conclusion to the eclectic collection.
