This medicine song came through about a week after the passing of my maternal grandmother, Dora Kaufman, who was very dear to me. I have sung it in ceremonies and sound meditations, and am often told by participants that it brings through relatives that have passed.

Grandmother

The original song is "Qui a tué Grand-Maman?" by Michel Polnareff - recorded in France in 1971. The song was popular in the Soviet Union, where my mom's partner, Psoy Korolenko, heard it on vinyl growing up. In December 2019, while on tour with Psoy, I went to visit the famed apartment in Saint Petersburg (down the street from the Winter Palace) where my grandmother grew up. Standing at the foot of her doorsteps, I looked at her building and saw her: Babushka in the 1930s, young and beautiful, my age, about to embark on her life and meet my grandfather, her soon to be husband. 

Where her apartment once stood is now a closed art and paint store. I heard the song in my head and the first lines of my English translation emerged:
"There once was a time, when grandma was alive... where once there was a garden, only memories remain..."

My version is a translation of the Russian from the French, an adaptation of both and of neither - a mix of something of my own in between. I recorded it a few weeks after it was born, in January 2020 at a friend's farm in California.

I dedicate this song to my grandmother, to the days gone by, to the past, to remembering.

I find elements especially in ambient and downtempo music that always give me the same feeling of inner peace. Something that isn't always easy to find. And I learned that there are different ways and there is different music that can bring me to the same place.

The song "Zemlya" (“Earth”) was written in 2014 in India and returning to life almost 10 years later the project was implemented in Mexico by a team of unanimous people which became a bridge connecting characters and continents for the sake of common message. This is a view of the world through the eyes of nomad who passed thousands of distinct ways on the terrestrial surface, the ode of gratitude to our magnificent home in all its diversity, to the great and generous Mother Earth which blooms and fills us with life despite all the pain caused by the ignorance of human ego. It’s kind of mantra, confession and conversation with Nature, the cry of the soul carrying deep pray for healing, unity and peace at all levels of our earthly existence.
