Charles Henri Maulini was born and raised in the colorful city of Nice, in the south of France. Together with his brother Pierre (ex-M83, ex- HillMadeLow and now part of Stal) Charles has always created music.  In their youth he and his brother toured Europe with the indie rock band A Red Season Shade and this is how Charles got in contact with VOLKOREN. After musical studies at the National Conservatoire of Music and years working as a concert organist and pianist, the time was right for something new…

Unfortunately, this was literally the exact same time of one of the most tragic events in the recent history of France. On November 13th, two days before he planned to leave Paris for the recordings of his debut album ‘Peaks’, Paris was hit by terrorist attacks. Charles and his brother made it out alive (even though one bomb exploded in their favorite restaurant) but they lost dear friends in the attacks. In 2016 Charles was back in Nice and again he was there when a terrorist attacked France as a big van drove into the crowd. Life would never be the same. One wonders what could be next.

In the midst of all this chaos and disaster, music felt more urgent than before. Even though he was scared and shocked he did leave Paris for a train trip to Amsterdam to record his album together with producers and friends Jan Borger and Minco Eggersman. The songs were of course greatly influenced by what had happened over the last two years and without a doubt, new songs came to light. Heavier perhaps than initially planned, the subtle and mesmerizing piano melodies that seem to comfort the heavy cellos (by Jonas Pap) give room to abstract guitar arrangements (by Johan Borger) based on the subtle drums and other organic sounds (by Minco Eggersman and Jan Borger). The light that seems hidden eventually burst out on the last and beautiful improvisation track with the honorable title ‘Paris’, in memory of many who died in the attacks, thus summing up an epic album that will resonate for a very long time.

Even though the songs can be melancholic, Charles Henri Maulini aims to touch every listener’s heart with a touch of hope and so lights up the light inside. Because though it can be heavy at times – he knows what he speaks of – music is, after all, hope.

After the recent albums of Larus Sigurdsson and the soundtracks of Minco Eggersman this album is a perfect next step for VOLKOREN and a must hear for anyone enjoying the albums of Nils Frahm, Eric Satie and Olafur Arnolds.

Imagine Iceland, a winter’s day, you are alone and there’s hardly any light. However, in some way light that’s left, reflects on a big lake. It’s hard to determine its origin. Somehow it does not matter, as this resonates beauty in its purest form …

If music was ever truly ‘created’ by someone, it would be the music by Lárus Sigurðsson. Not only the melodies, but also the instruments themselves have been made by the 45-year-old Icelandic guitarist of post-rock band Stafrænn Hákon.

After studying the classical guitar at the College of Music in Iceland, Lárus moved to England to study Anthroposophy and Pedagogy. There he met a master carpenter and violinmaker who became his private teacher. This opened a whole new world to Lárus; the world of musical instrument-making and woodwork in general. Lárus studied the master at work like a true disciple, watching every step of the process closely, discovering the great depth this craftsmanship has to offer. It was under his guidance that Lárus started to design new stringed instruments made from wood he found on Iceland. As wood is a rare find on the island, these instruments become even more unique. Over the years, these ‘earth-harps’ (jarðhörpur), as Lárus calls them, have found their way into his music; sometimes as a lead instrument but often not more than as a subtle bright note scratching the dark surface.

After his studies in England, Lárus moved back to Iceland and started a wood-workshop in a small community for disabled people in the countryside. There he continued to design his unique instruments in an ideal environment. Over the years, it turned into a little instrument museum as well, which happens to be the place where Olafur Josephsson of Stafrænn Hákon and Lárus met. Ever since the two became friends, they have been working together in music regularly. In fact, Lárus is now the guitarist in the band and this band is also the link with VOLKOREN. Label owner and vocalist Minco Eggersman has written and sung tracks for four albums of Stafrænn Hákon so far.
In the summer of 2014 Lárus and Minco met at a festival in Amsterdam. Ever since that festival, they have been working on a way to get Lárus’ music out to the world. Therefore, the earlier works of Lárus Sigurðsson – Dagur Sundraranna and Höfuð á Sundi –were released digitally as a warm-up to the 2016 album We are told that we shine, which is mixed by Jan Borger and features Olafur Josephsson of Stafrænn Hákon on guitar. In 2017, Jarðhörpur (recorded by Valgeir Sigurðsson who is known for his work with Björk), saw the light. Part two of this EP will follow soon.

Now it’s first time for The Beauty of an Ending. This album is based on piano improvisations, played in a little Icelandic church after a period of mourning. Lárus found himself on a crossroads, which led him to these improvisations. Besides that, he had to turn away from his work and dwelling place. The only things left were his music and his own life. These beautiful, but sometimes painful sketches on piano are accompanied by Lárus’ typical soundscapes. Despite the melancholia, hope is rising in this work and the music is more about life than about dead. That’s why the working title Requiem was changed into The Beauty of an Ending.

Lárus’ music can be described best as the crossroads of both improvisation and minimal ideas that have been thought through very carefully, with a little touch of the more abstract work of Björk and the works Christian Fennesz and Godspeed You Black Emperor.

Welcome To His World - Lárus Sigurðsson

What is possibly the most striking thing about Hidden Land’s music is the conversation it achieves. Myles O'Mainnian from California and Johan Lager from Stockholm, Sweden create a sound that is esoteric and stirring. It is a conversation of the beautiful and the painful, played out over mostly wordless vocals and swelling strings. It offers an invitation into the long pause — a reflective space where the unexpected twists and turns of each track feel a lot like life itself. Ambient and ethereal, one might think of the work of Sigur Rós or Jónsi and Alex. However, where both of those projects tend to lean into the experimental, Hidden Land takes on more traditional chord progressions and deconstructs them with discordant iterations, creating over and over again the texture of discourse.

Laaksum, SILMUS' third album, can be called an ode to Laaksum, a place filled with memories of youth.  All the memories melted together perfectly into new songs with the spherical abstraction SILMUS is known for. At the same time, the post-rock vibe is still there when the beautiful guitar melodies dance on a bed of soundscapes with the melodical stillness inspired by the land and sea. The Spirit Of Morning Light is the first single of the album.
 
With the help of befriended musicians like Jan Theodoor Borger (piano), Minco Eggersman (drums) and Guy Gelem (cello) it took SILMUS three years to finish Laaksum. The special artwork (designed by Daniel Thomassen) adds to the music and creates a bigger picture.  

The album invites you to pick up the feather and revisit your own memories. It invites you to be part of this musical journey where you may find yourself on the top of the pier, with the water lapping over the stones, and the geese travelling above your head …

The Spirit Of Morning Light - SILMUS

While walking down the street on no particular day in his hometown Leeuwarden, it was the discovery of a single feather that brought back memories from days of youth and long forgotten scenes from early childhood.

After more than 30 years, the feather triggered Gert Boersma – aka SILMUS – to go back to a little place at the IJsselmeer, a closed off inland bay in the southside of Friesland, the North of the Netherlands: Laaksum. It was the perfect picture to the sounds he would later create.
The cold and grey days with nothing but the sound of crows and herons in bare trees, somehow reflected beauty. He remembered his strolls around the old pier, the smell at the waterside and he found himself back collecting feathers of swans and geese. 

All the memories melted together perfectly into new songs with the spherical abstraction SILMUS is known for. At the same time, the post-rock vibe is still there when the beautiful guitar melodies dance on a bed of soundscapes with the melodical stillness inspired by the land and sea.

Een Griekse volksdanseres die als kind in het geniep moest zingen, plus een Duitse componist die geen noten kan lezen?

Tien jaar lang heeft het Duits/Griekse echtpaar van alles uitgeprobeerd, geschreven en opgenomen. Na meer dan 1200 concerten in de hele wereld viel het kwartje, op een magisch moment in de zomer van 2010.

Als Europees voorprogramma van Whitney Houston wisten ze enorme stadions stil te krijgen met alleen hun twee stemmen. Ze beseften dat hun doel bereikt was: ze konden het grote publiek ontroeren, puur door oprecht zichzelf te zijn.

De bijna bovennatuurlijke samenklank van hun stemmen is niet eens het belangrijkste kenmerk van hun muziek. Koppig blijven ze geloven dat hun Duitse en Griekse culturele erfgoed genoeg in zich draagt om unieke en tijdloze muziek te maken. Dat is het belangrijkst.

Ze vinden hun inspiratie in de prachtige melodieën van de barokmuziek van Bach, maar ook in het heftig experimentele tijdperk van Duitse jaren-´70 muziek (denk aan Popol Vuh en Kraftwerk) en de groots opgezette stadionrock zoals de Scorpions die maakte. De toch eenvoudige liedjes van SEA+AIR weten desondanks altijd een weg terug te vinden naar catchy en tegelijk opvallende klassiekers, zoals een land aan zee (Griekenland) ze al eeuwenlang voortbrengt en verspreidt.

SEA+AIR heeft als voorprogramma getourd met artiesten en bands als Sufjan Stevens, White Stripes, Jose Gonzalez, The Flaming Lips, The Soundtrack Of Our Lives, Woven Hand, John Grant, The Divine Comedy en Whitney Houston.

SEA+AIR -  the heart of the rainbow

'Through my eyes' is het debuut album van Mariecke Borger.  Daarmee stapt ze uit haar                                                                                                              eigen schaduw en vertelt ze na een 'writersblock' haar eigen verhaal. 
Op het album zijn o.a. Bertolf en de strijkers uit het orkest van Kyteman en Niels Broos (o.a. Pete Philly/Kyteman) te horen.

Mariecke neemt je mee in haar wereld met een stem die al sinds haar veertiende wordt geroemd in allerlei recensies, een stem uit duizenden. De liedjes zitten niet vol met grote woorden en opgeklopte emoties. Nee, het zijn juist de kleine verhaaltjes die in het dagelijks leven zo vaak onopgemerkt blijven. De liedjes komen schijnbaar uit een andere tijd - de jaren '70 invloeden zijn onmiskenbaar.

'Through My Eyes' is een volwassen singer-songwriter plaat geworden die zeker niet misstaat in de schappen van de platenwinkel naast de albums van Gillian Welch, Rosie Thomas en Lisa Hannigan. De eerste single van het album is 'All that I need'

For over 25 years Remco Den Hollander – ‘Denhollander’ – (1971) has been active as a musician; although always in service of others. Through the years, he has been part of numerous bands, worked on a diversity of projects, and as a session musician he has played on quite a few studio albums. Despite the pleasure he found in doing this, he drifted astray from his own story; a story about loneliness and loss, but most of all about music. 

From an early age, being a sensitive and only child, he discovered music as a creative outlet and a way to express himself. Remco often found himself alone and therefore created a musical dream world to disappear into. Since his parents were engaged entrepreneurs, it seemed likely that he would take over the business in time. Still, against all expectations, he decided to go a different way and developed himself in the field of photography, design, and music. When his father unexpectedly died way too soon, it became clear to Remco that he should not postpone his plans. His energy belonged in his own project, not in the work of others; Denhollander was born.

Old acquaintance Minco Eggersman was approached and soon a plan was made to record the first solo album. Selecting ‘only’ eleven tracks soon turned out to be a huge task. Through the years, Denhollander has collected no less than five hundred tracks and ideas! Years of experimenting with music and sounds were unravelled. From a 4-track Fostex cassette recorder to 4-track midi discs, to modern digital equipment and software; everything was listened to and analysed. For a wandering and inquisitive mind this was an enormous artistic, limitless world and it was up to Minco to create order in the chaos. Together with engineer/musician Theodoor Borger the selected tracks were taken to a higher level. It was as if Denhollander was going through the photo collection of a prominent photographer to hand-pick the ‘useless’ images and see them in a different light. With the help of Minco and Theodoor his sketches evolved in beautiful, mature songs of cinematic proportions. Currently three international movies have soundtracks with his name on them. 

The debut album with the suitable name Birth of a lifetime came about with the help of several session musicians, this time around in service of Denhollander. You can hear the exotic sound of the duduk, played by the Danish Steen Gees Christensen; the beautiful bluesharp of Arie van der Plas, the dreamy piano of Theodoor Borger and the minimalistic drums of Minco Eggersman. All the other instruments are played by Denhollander himself.  

And so Denhollander wrote a new chapter in his story: from death to new life. Birth of a lifetime  is an unconventional, cinematic and melancholic album, never without hope and very well-fitting in the list of Max Richter, Olafur Arnalds, the soundtracks of Mogwai, and sometimes even coming close to the elusive beauty of a band like Talk Talk.
