Victor Ruiz's label VOLTA serves up a fantastic EP, this time with Balthazar & JackRock behind the three original tunes. This DJ and producer duo have made a real impact with their tunes on the likes of Drumcode, Terminal M, Plus 8 and Filth on Acid and do so again here.

Solar Deity opens up with grading bass and the sort of raw techno drums that make a whole warehouse march. There is real tension in the synths and a vocal brings the soul. Princess of the Sun is another hard edge banger with synths that sound as if they have been fired from a machine gun. They light up the sky and will get hands in the air. Last of all is Vibrant, another powerful track, this time with loopy and heady synths that will boggle the brain as the glitchy percussion rides on. An epic breakdown features cosmic keys raining down from above before the drop blows the roof off.

Launched in the tail-end of 2022 - Victor Ruiz’s VOLTA imprint is already making strides in the techno space through a relentless stream of impactful releases from a mixture of some of the genre’s biggest names and most promising talents. The latest release on the label sees Hamburg-based duo ANDATA deliver a blistering two-tracker titled ‘Play Hard’.

Kicking off the release, the title cut ‘Play Hard’ does what it says on the packaging. Thumping drum work and hissing percussive drive steer the track forwards amongst a sea of progressively climactic melodic components, and atmospheric breaks whilst a catchy spoken vocal hook keeps you reeling alongside its ever-intensifying acidity from start to finish - this one was built for the absolute peak of the party.

‘Pleasant Experience’ rounds off the release with more weighty rhythms, swapping ferocity for a more groove-focused cadence. Romanian artist Tao Anra synthesises her hyperactive but sensitive personality into her music, playing from high energy to dark and groovy Techno. Her musical journey began in The Netherlands during her university years, following up with releases on 7Rituals, Kuukou Records and Kaligo Records. Kicking off with the title cut, ‘Gracias a la Vida’ dives straight into a flurry of racy grooves and blistering electronic musicality. Victor Ruiz’s VOLTA imprint heads into 2024 in the same vein as it ended 2023, with an unrelenting flow of top-quality releases, the next from Wehbba and label boss, Victor Ruiz. After their infamous b2b at Warehouse Project in December 2022, it was maybe a sign of things to come, and after not collaborating for almost 10 years, the duo found time in Sao Paulo, resulting in their next release ‘Stand’.
The title cut ‘Stand’ was made during lockdown, “It felt fast at the time, but then techno had a surge in faster bpm’s being played and released, so when I came back to the track 4 years later, it almost feels slow” says Wehbba. “I sent the track to Victor, and he added some drums and vocals that were perfect, but it wasn't until we played it out, that we realised what was missing”. Laced with enveloping acid and modulating analogue elements from early on, its ebb and flow of gripping peaks and troughs filled with expansive soundscapes, hooking vocals and riveting crescendos are the perfect precursors to its several gritty, sawing synth lead. “Now we are both in Lisbon, we got into the studio again and worked out the finer details and completed the track” adds Wehbba.
‘Silo’ completes the release with an appropriate amount of ‘boom’ throughout. Thumping kicks and subtle percussive drive lead the way along hollowed-out sub-bass and melancholic arps that expand further into the mix, giving rise to sharply rising synth lines and pulsating bass stabs. A progressively climbing roller with endless energy and loads of off-beat shuffle throughout, it perfectly caps off an impressive release.

'Nirvana' kicks things off with some immaculately produced euphoria. Berlin-based producer Kaufmann unveils her powerful new single “Mother” on VOLTA Records. This evocative release is accompanied by two standout remixes from Tao Andra and Mila Journeé, each bringing a distinct vibe to the energetic original.

“The vocal is undoubtedly at the centre of the track,” Kaufmann explains. “I took inspiration from a well-known System of a Down track and placed the mother at the heart of the story. It's actually my own voice, which I processed with AI, among other tools. I wanted to combine the energies of my favourite genres: techno with some psy and a pinch of metal."

Tao Andra’s remix takes the track into hypnotic, tribal-influenced techno terrain, while Mila Journeé lends her signature melodic touch with a cinematic, driving reinterpretation.

“This is my second time releasing with VOLTA Records,” says Mila Journeé. “The first was a two-track EP that did really well, and now I'm back with a remix of a really cool track by Kaufmann, at the invitation of Victor, a great friend and production partner who I love working with. Ilona Maras is making her debut on VOLTA following a series of successful releases on leading techno imprints including Alan Fitzpatrick's We Are The Brave and Frankyeffe's Riot.

Combining beefy basslines with hedonistic vocals and pounding drums, Ilona Maras' style is tailor-made for the dance floor.

Talking about Ilona Maras' release on his record label, Victor Ruiz said: "When Ilona sent me these tracks, I knew immediately that they were special. A balance between some classic and timeless techno sounds, but with a modern
approach."

Hailing from Switzerland, Ilona Maras is based in Zurich, and is a resident DJ at the city's Hive Club, where she regularly plays alongside icons ranging from Gregor Tresher to Joyhauser.

This two-track release showcases Ilona Maras' masterful ability to ignite a dance floor into a unifying blaze of energy and excitement.

“I’ve always felt that my music was somewhat different and most times hard to place on a certain label. I saw many other artists feeling the same. There was a gap. That’s when I knew it was time for me to create VOLTA.”

A percentage of the profits of the label goes to charities and causes chosen by all the artists that are involved.
