Nene H has made a name for herself with her signature boundary-pushing sound, always exploring different paths on which techno can lead her, be it in productions, live sets or DJ mixes. A key figure in Russian techno community, Nastia Reigel started out by throwing illegal dance parties in Siberia when she was just 18. That tenacity and dedication later found her in St.Petersburg in 2018, launching the first-ever queer parties in town called Грань (Grahn’) which was written up in DAZED Magazine. Later, following the footsteps of Грань events, she launched O-Zine Radio – a podcast that intends to introduce, emphasize, and unite queer musicians from Russia and across the globe.

Having started out in the early 2010’s, Mario Campo quickly joined the famous Pole Group after a string of big releases that saw him rise up in the Spanish scene. His music remains highly immersive and almost atmospheric, but where his music seemed to have more of a dub roundness to it a few years back, his productions nowadays have reduced in sonic depth but gained in impact. 

Kwartz has been able to differentiate himself while being highly complementary to the contemporary scene by combining his cloudy style with Spanish club efficiency to make weapons on wax.

EBM, industrial, wave, drone, it’s all in there and it’s done magnificently well by Jerome Tcherneyan and Barkosina Hanusova. A couple collaboration dating back to about 2016, the two met in the London scene and almost instantly started recording together to start their project on impulse, something that seems to drive their sound through every release since. 

With increasing acclaim through each record, the two sent a message with their album on the Italian VEYL recordings ‘Suicide Disco’ that really imposed their sound internationally with tracks like ‘Face to Face’ and ‘I’m Still a Pill’ which are classics at this point.

Originally from Kyiv in Ukraine, Cook started with producing minimal techno under his first alias - Freeker5. With his first release as Yan Cook in 2011, his sound immediately got deeper and more atmospheric - leaving behind the pacey, dry sound design that he produced as Freeker5. Since, Yan Cook has been putting music out very regularly - often 5 or 6 releases a year. 

With a sound meant for darkly lit clubs, Yan Cook’s work proves to be useful in a variety of atmospheres within that world - small or large capacity, no matter which city.

Nur Jaber is one of those artists that bring electronic music to another level. Her meditative sets carry away the listeners in trance-like introspections where the emotions conveyed, whether upbeat, gloomy, or full of rage, are always genuine and transformative. 

Born in Beirut, Lebanon, DJ and producer Nur Jaber (Nour of her real name) moved to Berlin in 2010, where performing in Berghain was a transformative experience. Since then, her career brought her to play worldwide, carrying the message of “One world, one race, one love, one rave”. Constantly channeling new ways to express her creativity, she recently launched IFONLY, a new label that focuses on classical music and film music, hence completing her techno label OSF.

With her debut release on Coincidence Records in 2018, AADJA will go on to put out a few more projects before scoring an acclaimed 6 track record on Nina Kraviz’s Trip Recordings. ‘Thought Dealer’ hit the scene just last year in 2021, proposing a very relevant collection of tracks high in tempo and in tension. In there, you can hear quite a few worlds - the closer ‘Still Wired’ takes the listener on a nostalgic 160+ bpm acid trance highway, while tracks like ‘Hypomania’ balance it out with a more groovy and tunneling techno that include her own hypnotic vocals and wide filter sweeps and 16th stabs. 

Her career in DJing could only gain traction after a release like that, making her Boiler Room debut in Toronto last year and her 1st Possession in Paris this year in February. With a few more tricks up her sleeve for the coming year, 2022 is looking like her best one yet.

Few are the artists who can claim to have as much influence in the international techno scene as Setaoc Mass. Producer, DJ, and label-owner, Sam Coates has been pushing forward club music with his work since his debut release in 2011.

Originally from the UK and now based in Germany, Setaoc Mass partially started out with an interest in IDM and electronica out of a small village outside Manchester he called home before ever stepping into techno. With a consistently strong stream of releases since the beginning, it was in 2015 he began his journey with SK-11 which initially was meant exclusively for self-releases. That was the case until Yant sent him demos, for which Coates created the SK-X sublabel, which became the center of attention in the scene since this first release.

Following this was a steady flow of releases that made their way in the world’s top selectors record bags, featuring new-comers like New York’s Holden Federico, or affirming strong careers like Holland’s TWR-72. With a relationship to techno tracks like tools for mixing tunneling and hypnotic sets for an attentive crowd, Setaoc Mass has brought his sets all over the world, often with tracks he either produced or pressed with the SK logo. Always in search of the next effect, the next artist, or the next track, Setaoc Mass’s ear has crafted him a career that has only been on the rise since it started.

A leading figure in the rise of Portuguese techno over the past couple of years, Nørbak has quickly made a big name for himself on a very international level. A producer first and DJ second, his records show an in-depth understanding of digital sound design and his sets are very complementary to these tracks. 

With a list of top labels for his releases including Jeff Mills’ Axis Records, Soma, Mord, Modularz, and so many more - he’s been able to display his intimidatingly stormy and anxious style through parties all over Europe and beyond. One of the founding members of the highly acclaimed Hayes Collective alongside others, including Temudo who we had the pleasure of having on earlier, Nørbak has been very active not only making records, but participating in the curation of his collective concept as well that has been taking underground techno by storm lately with artists like Quelza, VIL, CRAVO, Fresko and many others.

Hailing originally from Milan, Italy, the young Alarico has been popping up left and right internationally on various flyers and record releases, both of them hinting at a great career in the making. Part of a new freshman class of artists working on raw, deep, and quick techno, his productions often result in psychotic effect. Fast, swinging hats chase a rolling synth line made only more erratic by confronting stabs.

In an era where emulating vintage sound is the trend, Alarico takes the best of the past and extracts the cheapness before looking forward, creating records of very reliable effect that have been employed by the world’s top selectors. Taking all of this into account, it would only make sense to have him release on HAYES collective, do a 14-track mental breakdown of a record on Diffuse Reality, do his first contribution to Token, or deliver probably his most successful release yet on Amsterdam’s OOM Records.

Breaking rhythmic codes and rethinking club music as a whole, DJ Spit has been offering sets all around Europe with a forward thinking, heavily UK inspired track selection. Playing records from a young age and growing up listening to metal more than anything, DJ Spit integrated himself in DJ circles at eighteen, which has led to a longtime passion for music and selection that developed into a quickly rising career. 

With two new digital labels under his name, Rascals Records and Verteiler, he furthers his work in music research by putting together records with his best found artists around him and pushing them to the forefront of his German scene. He currently holds down a residency at HÖR Berlin, the famous online streaming platform where he runs the Explorers podcast, regularly inviting fresh artists to come play like Omrann and CEM. 

With all of this work playing, promoting, and digging, DJ Spit plans to kick off his production career with a highly anticipated debut release. Increasingly playing large venues all over Germany, playing as resident at Tbilisi’s Tes Club, and so much more, DJ Spit aligns himself with a new wave of up and coming artists that prioritize eclecticism and originality.

We’ve invited many artists and introduced them to you over the course of this podcast, so we thought it would only be appropriate to introduce you to the creators of the project for a b2b of considerable strength and funk : Kairos and Dress.

Originally from Ypres in the north of Belgium, Michiel Demeulemeester (known as Kairos) has been mixing for the better part of his adult life. Consistently navigating between genres since his beginnings, he bases his selection on mood rather than style and this has led him to play varied sets across his country. 

Moving on to the other deck, there is Dress. The Dress project started a few years ago to regroup multiple ideas being spread thin over multiple aliases under a singular name for my productions and DJ sets. The productions are characterized by employing resampling and sound destruction using a mix of field recordings and synthesis for moody ambiances and sometimes driving cuts. 

Together, Kairos and Dress created Umtzi Bumtzi, which is a small event collective / DJ duo based in Ghent playing around Belgium for more light hearted and vibey music to take down the tone a little bit.

Swiss DJ and producer based in Berlin, Chlär is an artist emphasizing groove through blending tribal, vintage style club music with a modern touch. Using 3 or 4 decks in the booth, his high energy mixes combine rhythm-heavy tracks with his own production loops, ensuring the orginality of his work. 

Wearing many hats in his scene, Chlär has worked with leading labels such as Mutual Rytm, Taapion, RAW or Lobster Theremin and co-runs label Bipolar Disorder Rec. 

Not only an artist and sound engineer but also a professional of A&R and events management, Chlär has won the ‘’Raver’s Choice’’ award from the 2021 Raving Spoon Awards, rewarding leading figures of the scene.

Joining us for podcast 39 straight from New York is Holden Federico. Involving himself in music in various ways from a young age, the Philadelphia-native’s interest in production has led him to a single release on Setaoc Mass’s SK_Eleven that has made quite the impression. 

With a sharp, distinctive style, Federico glues timeless 90s techno influences with effective sound design to make club music that’s often melodically guided.

With his debut record out on SK and another one coming up very soon on the same imprint, Federico wasted no time with DJ gigs, throwing himself in the international scene alongside top-tier artists for a career that’s only getting started.

Hitting the scene hard in 2016 with his debut 4-tracker for Rotterdam’s Common Thread Records, Identified Patient’s sonic personality was born through downtempo saturation, club/wave fusion, and fuzzy acid. It comes as no surprise that his influences reach as far and wide as they do; Identified Patient is one of the rare artists whose sound can be recognised immediately, leading him to being very highly in-demand on the international market.

Identified Patient has the digging and aesthetic qualities of an artist’s artist while maintaining an understanding of music that makes him a hit even among newcomers to our music, and with a career that blasts through every coming year, we are proud to host him as our final artist on VOLTAGE Podcast.

For the occasion, we will be descending into the abyss of Transfo. Underneath the big power generators lies a huge cellar where hundreds of workers maintained these machines. They’ve been unused and undisclosed for many years and will now, for the first time, be exposed to the public.
