Mislav Matić aka ASU je zagrebški DJ, zbiratelj plošč in član kolektiva VOLTA, ki ga tvori skupaj z N/OBE-jem, Kornetom in Oberanom. Na zagrebški sceni, kjer je aktiven šele zadnji dve leti, trenutno nastopa predvsem na privatkah in manjših dogodkih, recimo partiju ekipe Paqistan Krew, in dogodkih kolektiva Volta – nazadnje je ogreval na njihovem novembrskem Boiler Roomu. Njegovi seti so tipično plesno-raziskovalni in osrediščeni okoli različnih izpeljank moderne plesne glasbe na presečišču trapa, dubstepa, hard druma, two stepa, jungla in drugih aktualnih žanrov. 

Za tokratni DJ afterparty je pripravil jutranjim uram prikrojen set v svojem eklektičnem slogu, ki nas od počasnih dembow ritmov v vseh možnih oblikah vodi proti hitrejšim perkusivnim plesnim muzikam s pečatom kakovosti.

“Conceived as a vehicle for live hardware improvisation, the Hence Therefore project creates viscous, fractured and unpredictable music for dancefloors and headphones” - so begins the press summary to Simon Unwin’s club moniker articulating deep frequencies and swirling them around circumstantial rhythms. Hailing from tropical Australia, Hence T is a relatively novel sight for us - but his work is faraway from its introductory phase, having stacked up releases, features, premieres, and debuts throughout the last couple of years.

Simon’s production skills incarnate are a frequent pick in the DJ sets of some of our friends and favourites, having perhaps most notably been featured prominently on LOFT’s recent Mixmag Impact mix. Using heavily manipulated live vocal samples, clattering percussion and cascading delays, Hence Therefore's unpredictable, spontaneous soundscapes place equal emphasis on full body movement as well as lofty cerebral highs. This is textured, analytic experimental techno exploring concepts of failure, the nature of work, and the limits of spontaneity, with a heightened ‘eco-sci-fi’ grain to it.

As a label owner, Hence co-runs 3BS Records - a staunchly DIY imprint focused on conceptual releases that explore climate-crisis anxiety and revolutionary despair; his hypnotic, ambient 2016 album “Strata” was released on this platform (think Lee Gamble’s Koch but with a penchant for grim nocturnal domestic stillness).

His live improvisational shows are a sight to behold on their own, unfolding the patches of his aesthetic world as the night’s design evolves. Performing in club spaces, house parties, warehouses and ambient/experimental settings across Australia, New Zealand and the UK, he has also recorded both live & DJ sets for Rinse FM, Quantica, Radar Radio and many others. 

Hence Therefore’s articulate treatment of sound coupled with his razor-sharp taste in electronics gave birth to this wondrous DJ mix featuring some of his own brisk club production as well as forward-thinking fresh drops from the likes of Stavrogin, Roska, and ANZ, sketching out a brilliant map of grooves, gliding seamlessly over/under postclub hypnosis and intricate bangerz, merging it into a wholesome, coherent, exciting dance form. A professional touch indeed.

Standing firmly in the domain of promising young contemporary club culture artists from the Anglosphere, Hence Therefore is sure to blow up big time soon, and it is our pleasure both to host this mix on our platform and to addictively listen to it. "I meant to submit a sort of trippy, chilled, reserved set, but quickly found myself with my foot on the accelerator, not least because I wanted to play a lot of new or unreleased stuff from me and my friends - that makes up about half of this mix. Hopefully there are a few moments in this mix that balance on the sweet tipping point between rave melancholy and rave euphoria. Enjoy 🙂"

Hence Therefore is a Sydney-based producer and DJ who specialises in hypnotic, driving dance music. His latest effort is Waste Frontier, released late last year on DJ Pitch's All Centre, which follows a clutch of releases on his and Jo Nee's 3BS Records. Simon slams out a wee mix for us in celebration, and after that it's Scarlett in warm-up mode for Lena Willikens at Whammy.
