Presenting a new mix series : LUBRIKATE YOUR LIVING ROOM.

As I approach my twentieth year of mixing records together, I've been on a mission to widen my musical horizons and explore some of my more fringe interests in greater depth. It took me a little too long to realise it, but presenting myself to the world as purely a techno artist was actually chipping away at my happiness. I think a big part of that was realising that I had put myself definitively in a box, and was spending the vast majority of my time listening to a very narrow musical cross-section. Some fantastic experiences and lasting friendships came with it, and I achieved some long-held dreams along the way, but I've decided that now is the time to express myself more freely and open myself up to more collaboration and community building.

But what exactly is Lubrikant? Essentially,  it's a way of sharing my knowledge and experience with some of the people I've met along the way by opening the door to collaboration and using my platform to share some of the brilliant musical minds that I've met over the years. 

The new series 'Lubrikate Your Living Room' will be a repository for some of my own mixes, and i'll also be inviting artists (and non-artists!) to express themselves without limitations of expectation, genre-strictures or time-limits. My hope is that, over time, this series will present a full-spectrum cornucopia of sonic possibility. And by inviting from a deep and wide pool, the possibilities for cross- pollination and new discoveries are practically endless. 

I invite my guests to follow their hearts and challenge their own patterns or any concept of audience expectation. The modern world and its precision engineered algorithms are very effective at keeping us in neat boxes and interminable feedback-loops, to be pre-packaged and sold to. I'm hoping this series can go some way towards breaking those chains and opening some minds along the way, including my own. 💦 Lubrikate Your Living Room 💦 : A Mix Series

In 2019, following a weekend playing in Berlin, I experienced a prolonged psychotic episode, my second (and first since 2004). The consequences  to my life and career were manifold and all-encompassing, and by the time the psychosis was retriggered in early 2021, the volition to engage with music on any meaningful level was utterly waylaid. Fortunately, I've been in good health since, and decided to undertake the Fitzcarraldo-like task of listening to and organising my entire digital library. I'm still not sure why I felt compelled to 'sort through the wreckage' in this way, but something told me there would be some kind of meaning to be derived from the endeavour. And I've decided to document the journey with a series of mixtapes, some of which will have a loose theme of sorts, such as this one. While there will be some new or recent music included, the vast majority of the tracks will have been collected in the last 10 years or so. 

I hope you will enjoy listening as much as I've been enjoying putting these together.

‘Unrequited Dub'

An oneiric lurch through the course of a night, from eventide until daybreak.

The third in the Through The Wreckage series of mostly ambient mixtapes.

"When putting these mixtapes together, I was working from a deep pool of possible selections, and noticed quite a few patterns emerging. I started off by grouping tracks on the basis of their sonic qualities, but also found it to be fun to work with track titles as an arbitrary constraint too. I'd like to think that the tracks in this mixtape go and flow together quite naturally, but it's also fun that the titles map the course of linear time from sunset until sunrise."

"This mixtape was originally conceived a few months back with my local pub, The Gun, in mind. I wanted to put together some low bpm tracks that I could conceivably imagine hearing there. It was left on the cutting room floor for a while, and brought to life here as an unmixed mixtape, befitting the nature of the series so far. "Once again, I've taken the starting point of a loose theme to make this mixtape, in this case tracks with (primarily) a nature reference in their titles, although I did allow myself some creative license to get the job done. 'Seasonal Affective Expression'

If I'm not mistaken, it's been 7 1/2 years since I last made and shared a 'techno' mix. Despite a few years away from the scene, and a less techno-dedicated approach to buying records these days, the idea of putting something together has been niggling at me for a while. I had in mind a deep, mid-paced journey inspired by some of the festivals that I've attended in the last few years.

The tracklist isn't an exercise in wilful obscurity (there's hardly anything released in the last 12 months!), and I nearly abandoned it due to some scruffy transitions, but life's too short to obsess over such things!

A London DJing and promotion mainstay since 2006, Casper Clark started using the name Volte-Face in 2014 when his first productions started to land, initially on his own label BleeD, with subsequent appearances on the likes of Semantica, Non-Series and Phorma. The period up until 2019 was marked by appearances at important beacons of the European techno scene such as Berghain, Tresor, Khidi, Trouw, Shelter, Rex, Razzmatazz, Lux and Gare as well as tours of the US and Asia. 

On a somewhat enforced hiatus since 2019, he’s recently found his way back to DJing with a renewed sense of focus and purpose, with a desire to explore and share a wider range of interests than he felt able or permitted to do in the past. His regular ambient series ‘Through The Wreckage’, and usually quite experimental radio shows can be found via his Soundcloud and this mix, his first on a podcast since an ambient set for Monument in 2018, hones in on a deep and heady broken-beat rhythm.

For our March introspective radio show, we had the pleasure of welcoming an old friend of ours, Casper Clark aka Volte-Face to take you through two hours of ambient & downtempo selections from his sizeable collection of music for curious ears 💫

As expected, things got pretty interesting on air at Netil Radio that Thursday afternoon and we are so happy to finally be sharing the recording of the show with you today. It’s a smooth voyage departing from the misty ports of spacious drones and sailing patiently into the deep ocean waters of progressive half time and dusty alternative experiments ⛵️

Volte-Face, a moniker of BleeD promoter/label-head Casper Clark, was a fixture on the European techno scene from 2014-2019, with his own productions (also as Rote alongside Daniel Avery) appearing on labels such as Semantica, Phorma and Non-Series His BleeD imprint also released material from the likes of Wata Igarashi, DJ Nobu, Refracted and Svreca, and he played regularly for the likes of Berghain, fabric, Tresor and Khidi . After an enforced hiatus , he's started to rear his head again with a recent mix for Oslated and a forthcoming ambient session for Deep Breakfast Series. He's also been hosting his own Through The Wreckage ambient mixtape series on Soundcloud, which is updated regularly.

Deep Breakfast 305 ~ Casper Clark

As part of The Gun’s run of final events, I hosted 2 ‘Just Because’ nights, based on the premise that the DJs would not exceed 100bpm, unless it was in case of an emergency. I was able to invite some of my closest friends to play across the two nights, including Debonair, Nadia Ksaiba, Emma Rudge, Ilan and my b2b partner on this particular night, Matt Walsh. 

We go back a long way, going to all of the same parties in the mid-noughties, playing together a lot at Bugged Out, Wax:On and the like and even hosting our own weekly residency, High Horse, at the legendary T Bar (alongside Ben and Alex from the equally legendary Skull Juice).

Matt and I decided that it would be nice to share this set ahead of our gig together in Margate this Sunday 4th May at Faith In Strangers.

Completing the triumvirate is our pal Daniel Avery, who’ll be headlining the night.

I recorded a roughly-mixed test-run of my planned set for Wide Awake festival, which I'm sharing here for posterity - in reality, some of the live acts overran and my actual set was cut to about 15 minutes on the night. These interstitial sets aren't supposed to have much consequence in the scheme of things, but I always enjoy a different musical challenge. Plus, the owner of the festival (who I collaborated with on Field Day from 2007-2019) is a big Tears For Fears fan, so everything led me to that finale really!

This one has lain dormant in my 'WIP' folder for quite some time, under the working title 'bleak and blue'. The final product is certainly blue in tone, but not quite as bleak as I'd first intended. It's a contemplative yet soothing 70 minute meditation for those early mornings or inter-city sojourns.

'Remember Yesterday' is a pensive, at times almost elegiac selection of home-listening beauties which have been carefully put together and mixed (with vinyl only) by a dab-hand selector who I've had the pleasure to know for quite some time. Ilan has become known more recently for his synth-driven 'Night City Life' compilations of forgotten and obscure gems, distributed via the Spacetalk label, but we first met on or around the dancefloor of his erstwhile Hypnotic Tango events in various London basements, which he ran alongside my close friend Olly Fas. He's quietly developed a reputation over the years as somebody that goes the extra mile to source weird and wonderful music of a generally upbeat nature, which is befitting of the weird and wonderful chap with a generally upbeat nature that Ilan undoubtedly is.

As with all of the forthcoming mixes in this series, please give it a chance and listen without prejudice. There's no tracklist this time around.

Episode 01 - 'Gradually & Then Suddenly' by Casper Clark

Synopsis : I was listening to some mixes by a recent discovery of mine, Kyle Toole, and felt compelled to start grouping some records from my collection into a playlist. As the list began to burgeon, it seemed to be taking on something of a downtempo, you might even say trip-hoppy flavour. Listening to the playlist took me back to being a young teenager in the living room of my childhood home. My Dad was in the grip of an ecstasy-fuelled midlife crisis and would be near-constantly playing Kruder & Dorfmeister’s ‘K&D Sessions’, bootleg Buddha Bar CDs, Leftfield’s ‘Leftism’, The Beloved’s ‘Conscience’ and various William Orbit and Fluke records. I realised over the years what a profound influence this time had on my eventual obsession with electronic music, especially of the deep and transcendent variety. I think there’s a misconception at times that all music that fell under the chill-out banner was somehow banal or wallpaper muzak, but that’s not the way that I see it at all. Hopefully you’ll agree once you’ve listened to this mix, a near 3 and a half hour journey.

BleeD presents... 'Social Sculpture'

For the first time, Volte-Face's BleeD releases a Various Artists compilation, featuring friends and close family of the label. Named after Joseph Beuys' concept of 'Social Sculpture', which serves to harness collective potential in an attempt to transform society (in some small way at least!), the release features eight different artists who embody the BleeD sound of the last few years of activity - Volte-Face, Rote (Daniel Avery & Volte-Face), DJ Nobu, Peder Mannerfelt, Opuswerk, Refracted, AWB and BLNDR.

Released on physical & digital formats July 13th.
