ARCHIVE TREASURE! Conny van Rietschoten reports a new 24-hour record onboard Flyer II during the 1981-82 Whitbread. The boat sailed 327 nautical miles on January 2, 1982. 

The team won that same edition and Conny - The Flying Dutchman - became the only skipper to have won the race twice in the history of the event.

ARCHIVE TREASURE! Connie van Rieschoten reports new record in 1982

Karim Douaidy is a Lebanese composer and music producer based in New York. For Making Waves he composed Dawama, which means whirlpool or spiral of  water, or the large movements of water currents in the ocean. But it can also mean when the mind goes through an unsettling time. For Karim, this song reflects the physical and mental hardship that sailors go through in the race, while also referring to the sea.

A multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and producer based in Cape Town, with a solid jazz trumpet and piano education, David Watkyns won the Cape Town edition of Making Waves. He composed ¨Blue¨, a song for the sailors, and to make it unique to the South African theme he introduced the African marimba, a rain stick, trumpet and flugelhorn on top of big piano, dance beats and lead synth! It’s a party with a deep message.

Brigitte Laverne, winner of Making Waves in Spain, composed ¨The City¨ inspired by “the city, love and freedom". Three things I relate to when thinking about the sea and sailing,” says Brigitte. Regarded at the moment as one of the most promising talents in electronic music in Spain, Brigitte admits that the sea is her passion!

Eric Lau, an international music producer and DJ based in London, composed The Waters for Making Waves Sanya (China). Lau created this theme with a pace that would work with the flow of the water. He also wanted to capture both the spirit of the water and the crew. ¨The water can be very serious but can also be very tranquil at the same time. The crew also showed a diversity and spirit that represents a lot of the modern world so I feel the elements in the music represents this fusion¨, says Lau. The flute, played by Olmo Cassibba, added life to the track and creates a subtle Chinese connection. There is also a cameo from ‘Horace’, 22 years old, the youngest crew member of he Dongfeng Race Team.

McMeeken is an Auckland, NZ based musician and song-writer. In late 2014, Ciaran released his debut E.P 'The Valley' which has gained him a strong online audience and an ever growing fan base. ¨I wanted the theme of leadership and unity to really shine through this song, as I saw this as the most important aspect of the race”, said McMeeken.

Donna Duo is a Brazilian musical singing duo made up of two young women with loads of musical talent. They composed ¨Velejar¨ (To sail) inspired in the challenges sailors face during the race. Donna Duo connects Brazilian rhythms with pop music and for this track they used typical Brazilian instruments, such as ¨rabeca¨ (similar to a violin) and a Brazilian viola. These instruments make a contrast with the electronic bits and the voices and the result is just amazing.

Will Evans is a professional touring musician from Rhode Island. He has spent the last decade as the primary song writer and drummer/ front man for the roots rock outfit Barefoot Truth and has now released his first solo album. He composed ¨Free¨ inspired by the race and Newport (Rhode Island, USA). ¨Newport is famous for it’s Folk Festival and so the acoustic guitar in Free certainly embodies Newport’s affection for the songwriters of our generation. I also wanted to capture the image of leaving Newport harbor with the magnificent Pell Bridge and it’s Great Gatsby shoreline and entering the blue freedom of the Northern Atlantic, said Will about this track.

FUZETA is a French bad that started in January 2014. It´s made of four young musicians, three of them are brothers passionate about sailing and races. With ¨Silence¨ they  wanted to recreate the atmosphere at the beginning of a surf session. "The early arrival at the beach on a summer morning. There is high tide, the beach is empty. We take the boards and we go towards the water. The waves are not big but enough to take us on. Everything is calm, there aren´t clouds. We are together, with the sound of the wind on the waves. It´s a theme that builds up, just like the sea that reaches the beach”, they explain.

Silence

Swedish sound designer and audio engineer, Karl Wassholm, composed ¨The big splash¨ inspired by Gothenburg. Karl, who has worked in the 10 years composing for theatre productions, has known the race all his live and the passion and love for sailing and the sea are reflected in this piece, a fanfare well suited for a big finale!
