We are thrilled to present the long-awaited return of Alter Echo & E3.  These are genre-defying tracks of immense power, depth, and detail, steeped in sound system mythologies while staking a claim to a piece of the unwritten future. This is a sonic world where dub effects feel sentient - echoes and reverbs spin DNA through their chains, creating alien flora and fauna as they go. Studio kinda cloudy, yes, with strange gasses and vapor suffusing the herb smoke.

Nubian Dub is a stripped, anthemic 140-dub tune that pummels with space and rocks with spectral energies.  A rough dubplate mix of the track circulated amongst a lucky few last year.  Lost for a time in a badman version excursion, Alter Echo emerged and the finished mix is now ready to reveal.  A haunting 'oud figure floats above the bedrock of a massive half-step riddim, while shards of percussion, voice, test tone, and effects that seem to breathe swirl in the space between them.   

Warning dub’s bunker-busting riddim is dragged along by a mutant Jammy-style bassline that lurches and blasts into unheard territories, parting thick, alien atmospheres with relentless fader-rocking forward motion.  Fevered cyborg consciousness, half-mulched sound-system tapes, desert flutes, and strange feral things just out of sight… Warning is both an existential reminder that in this life “anything can happen…” and a classic soundboy-challenge to any that might try to test this behemoth of a sound.

Alter Echo AKA Josh Derry, has spent the last decade and a half working as a dub scientist of the highest order. Through his collaborations with DJ Spooky, Lee Perry, Mad Professor, Scientist, Twilight Circus and countless others, he has often worked as the Hidden Hand, perfecting and alloying disparate materials into wholly new dub forms. Alongside E3, he was one of the founders of BSI Records, and has released on labels including M Records, Six Degrees, Thirsty Ear, Sub Rosa, and Bangarang. E3 (AKA Ezra E. Ereckson) is a founding member of agit-dub band Systemwide, was the head of BSI, and now runs ZamZam Sounds alongside Tracy Harrison. E3 has been a vinyl archaeologist for 25 years.

Marley's music had an immense impact on me as a youth and still resonates today Like many, he was my first introduction to reggae and since my first listen back in the 70s and 80s to now, his music does and will continue to stand the test of time and impact generations of fans and musicians alike for  the high quality of song writing and his message of harmony and peace..

Byzantine Memories Scattered on the Floor

On the cliffs of Uluwatu, when the ocean devours the sun, the seven masks awaken.
Eyes swell red, jaws stretch wide, and teeth gleam like knives.
The stone trembles under their laughter,
and the night opens with a mouth full of drums.

Before gods, before men,
storms carved the first dance:
thunder cracking skulls of clouds,
waves tearing cliffs like flesh from bone,
winds shrieking as if torn from hollow throats.
The masks are fragments of this first hunger,
faces of a rhythm that devours silence.

When dancers put them on, the masks feed.
Flesh becomes rhythm,
breath becomes fire,
and the world shakes with a frenzy of jaws.

The Ritual of Polyrhythm is not a song — it is a feast.
Teeth bite into stone, flames lick the wind,
and every step drives deeper into the marrow of the night.
The cliffs themselves bleed sound until the horizon splits open.


The Seven Masks and Their Dances

1. Mask of Stone Breath

The earth exhales through basalt teeth.
Its rhythm grinds slow and merciless, a jaw of rock crushing time.

2. Mask of Ember Laughter

Flames split into a grin of sparks.
Its rhythm leaps jagged and sharp, fire biting the night in radiant joy.

3. Mask of Ocean Eyes

The tide opens as a mouth that swallows endlessly.
Its rhythm drags all steps into the black water, drowning them in memory.

4. Mask of Hollow Flame

Ash swirls in its throat, a furnace without warmth.
Its rhythm is a hollow blaze, breath echoing in chambers of fire
where sound stretches like teeth across the void.

5. Mask of Thunder Echo

The skull of the sky splits wide.
Its rhythm is a roar of jaws above the earth,
a storm chewing silence into splinters.

6. Mask of Shifting Steps

The ground cracks beneath its feet.
Its rhythm twists and breaks, pulling dancers into chasms that never end.

7. Mask of Air and Dream

The final mouth opens into dawn.
Its rhythm devours form into shadow, shadow into smoke,
until only breath drifts across the horizon, carrying the hunger of night into day.


Closing

At sunrise the masks return to stone,
but their teeth remain restless.
They gnash in thunder, grind in the tide,
and bite within the dreams of all who have seen them.

The culmination of Zeb's professional experience and creative exploration as a composer, producer, sound engineer and performer, Hope & Light is an intense and insightful journey into the mind of an inspired multi-instrumentalist and musical fanatic.

Produced and creatively directed by the artist, Hope & Light is richly inspired by his past collaborations and wide-ranging influences. Featuring Zeb on keys and synths, and layered with his characteristic vocals, the album possesses an energy, maturity, warmth and texture that neatly encapsulates his ability as songwriter and album maker.

Hope & Light features appearances and input from an array of musical talents, including Synkro (R&S Records), Escapism Refuge, Om unit (Metalheadz, Cosmic Bridge & Planet Mu), Ash Walker, pianist and composer Joe Armon Jones (Ezra Collective), drummer Mck Nasty (Kamaal Williams & Black Focus), and prestigious jazz trumpeter Byron Wallen.

Like Zeb and his many of his collaborators, Hope & Light defies categorisation, touching on multiple genres: jazz, ambient and bass among the strongest elements. Though Zeb himself would probably describe his music jazz, alluding to his love of improvisation and the freedom of movement within each composition.

Zeb's music has already been supported on BBC Radio 6 Music, Clash Magazine, Magnetic Magazine, XLR8R, Kid Fonque's 5FM, by Belgium Tastemaker Lefto, Soulection Radio's Joe Kay and as a producer, he has worked with some of the most prestigious names in the music industry. As a label manager, he has released works from Ash Walker, Synkro, Djrum, Escapism Refuge, Lewis B, DFRNT, Congi, Geode, Versa & Rowl and Vivek.
