Exodos (Into The Unknown):

In ancient Greece, the term “Exodos” was used to describe departure, the “road” leading out into the unknown. The end of a story resulting in the beginning of another. Regardless of what happens on the other side, the exit from this realm is the only guarantee. The final breath exhaled. An absence. The death of a relationship, the end of a chapter of one’s life, turning and walking from the familiar into the wilderness. There is a stillness that comes with this moment. When the littlest sounds are wildly amplified, when the winds of change feel their strongest, a transition from one location to the next. These moments are nothing short of revolutionary. Happening when everything one thought they knew is upended, and they witness a shift in perspective. A shift that pushes the past away, making room for a fresh future to form.

At The Edge Of It All:

A moonlit night spent gazing out beyond the treetops, through the atmosphere at the many stars dotting the night sky. Little pinholes letting light into our eyes from another side. Laying in the grass wondering what, if anything, lies outside the edges of our universe. Outside of what is imaginable. An ever-changing place that harbors the energy of creation in its rawest form. A comet moving out in every direction at an increasing rate, and what is left in its tail? Everything. Which leaves only one thing left to exist, and that is “everything else”. “At The Edge Of It All” contemplates this idea that there is something beyond our universe, something that our universe is expanding out into, and that, between these spaces is a separation. Here we imagine standing at that edge. Immersed in a flurry of activity, the chaos of creation. The “edge” can refer to many things. Being faced with one’s own mortality, for example. Standing in the face of death, and everything that comes with experiencing that moment, at the edge of everything we know.

An excerpt from Nathalie Joachim's score for LAND BRIDGE, a new evening-length work by choreographer Helen Simoneau. The piece investigates heritage, assimilation and identity to reveal how the willing erasure of the self may serve as a means of renewal and redirection. This work premiered at the Hanesbrand Theatre in Winston-Salem, NC, March 3-5, 2016. The musical collaboration was made possible with funding from New Music USA.
