Silence, trembling with faint vibrations from outside disturbances, settled over the cargo hold’s depths, one of the many horrors the boy had come to know below the Kessler’s decks.

No crew patrolled these corridors. No maintenance drones drifted through the dim lattice of steel passageways. Only a lone blue light at a crossroads guided his way, its soft hum rising and falling with each measured pulse.

After a while, a brighter glow shimmered at the end of a side passage. Drawn toward it, he found a slim UI panel fixed beside a pair of heavy black doors.

A red bar pulsed along the bottom edge of the screen. He reached out, pressed a finger to it, and the doors split apart with a low groan, revealing a cramped chamber scarcely five feet across.

The chamber’s interior brightened as the doors sealed behind him. Cool white panels flickered to life along the walls, revealing a single pedestal at the center. Its surface shifted through soft colors, as if thinking.

A voice rose from the room, smooth and level, neither male nor female.

“Welcome, passenger.”
