Who/what currently inspires you music-wise that has nothing to do with music? 

All the swampy scenes in films that I watched recently also skate vids.

Favorite sound of the city? Describe how it makes you feel.

Pulling out someone else's USB by accident when going b2b and causing total silence or emergency loop

Henzo, I know he has some truly illegal edits on there

Favorite musical memory in deep description?

Any of the 8+ DJ b2bs that I took part in in Bristol. All night chaos every time I miss that place dearly

Ways to calm your nerves before a set? 

1.5 pints of beer no more no less

Cucina Povera is the moniker of Maria Rossi. Maria is from originally from Finnish Karelia, the European region that borders Finland and Russia, and is now based in Glasgow. Her sublime and haunting experimentations in voice and field recordings have been captured on labels including Offen, Editions Mego, Night School, Primordial Void, Mappa and BAKK. We have been captured by her works, and are so honoured to have her take over the first hour. 

From Maria: The mix was inspired by friends and musical loves of mine who make great work. Hence I decided to include lesser known or unpublished works, by friends from Scotland, Ireland, Frankfurt, London, Finland, Quebec, Argentina, Spain, Afghanistan... Finishing the mix is a recent collaboration of mine with a dear one.

Living Room n°28 ~ @malvern-brume

q. pls introduce yourself

I'm Rory, I live in South East London, spend a good deal of time working with sounds and putting various names in front of it, but mainly do things as Malvern Brume. I run a small label with my good friend Ben Waggett called Infant Tree and do all sorts of other stuff in and around those things.

q. is there a story behind the mix?

Not sure there's much of a story in terms of a narrative but usually when approaching these things, unless i've got a burning urge to do something specific, its a case of playing the music i've been listening to most at that given time (which is why in most of my mixes you'll hear something to do with Af Ursin or Karla Borckey because I seem to listen to them all the time!). I find I fall quite easily into listening to music that reflects how I'm feeling, as I'm sure most do so it's nice to have a document of it to look back on. I like music that challenges me and my perception of what I would deem to be good. Quite often I find things like the music I've played at the start of the mix to be confronting, something to do with the minimal instrumentation and probably some emotional entanglement. I think writing about sound can be an impossibly difficult thing to do and there's very few people who do a good job of it (in my opinion) so I'm hesitant to say too much! haha

q. what's the best way to enjoy your mix?

All the music I've picked is stuff I've listened to whilst walking or cycling so I'd say that would be one suggestion. I really enjoy the disturbances and interactions that come from listening in a less controlled listening environment, especially when you come across tones that oscillate against what's happening in the music. Walking is a really important part of the Malvern Brume stuff in general. Most of the music for it is based on walks I've done or graphic scores I've made whilst walking. When I'm listening back to the recordings it's usually when walking that I decide whether to do something with it or not.

q. describe a favorite object in your living room

I've got a painting by Ben Waggett who does Infant Tree with me (it's titled Shoreham Hovel https://www.victorwaggett.co.uk/threeanchorites/). I love it, I think I asked Ben for it when he was finishing uni and hope it stays with me forever. I live in a shared house with some friends so it's probably the most sentimental thing I keep down here (I'm in the living room now)

q. are you working on any projects right now (music or not music)?

Yeah, I've got a few things on the go. Next thing to surface will be a tape for Kashual Plastik, which may even be out by the time this surfaces (Last track in the mix is from this tape). Very stoked to be working with my friend Frank to get that music out and I'm really happy with how it sounds. Myself and Sholto Dobie have been editing some recordings we made when I was in Vilnius to see where that will go, which I'm excited about (again I played one of the tracks in this mix). There's another release lined up with some music I made early 2020, not sure when that will surface but it's in the works, and then I've started recording some new MB stuff and am working on some music for different projects. I like to take pictures and recordings of bird houses I find on walks so i'll be keeping that up for sure and maybe one day i'll do something with that, and there's some other work i've been doing with walking and graphic scores for a couple years now but i'm in no rush to share that just yet!
