Taitu - a song praising the Ethiopian Empress (1889). Taitu commanded a force of cannoneers at the historic Battle of Adwa which resulted in the defeat of Italy in March, 1896. She is a strong figure who can inspire girls to look up to her as a source of courage.

Yegna is a brand designed to reframe the value of girls in Ethiopian society by catalysing conversations amongst girls, boys and their communities.   Yegna exists to multiply the power of today's girls to create a better tomorrow.

About the group:  Yegna provides behaviour change messages through branded products: a radio drama, pop music, a talk show and feature length films which champion the potential of Ethiopian girls. Yegna means 'ours' and is designed to speak to men & boys too – we want them to believe in the potential of girls as much as girls themselves.

Lepa Mlađenović was one of the first publicly  identified lesbians in Serbia. , a feminist and an antinationalist, , anti fascist anti war heroine and a dear sister. 

One of the founders of women in black, 
Autonomous Women’s Center (1993) and Arkadia (1991).

She speaks openly and publicly  against homophobia and against violence perpetrated against women.

Writes Milos Urosevic:
“When on the road to besieged Sarajevo the border police of the Republic of Srpska called out a Muslim woman to step out, Lepa Mlađenović stood up and said: “Take me as well. I am the same as her” 

 She was awarded the Felipa de Souza Award in 1994 and  the Anne Klein award in 2013 for her work on human and women’s rights

In her own words:
“Women’s solidarity is a decision to listen to the experience of the Other, to try to hear the interpretation and the values the other woman has. In this process of listening to her, she is in some way already here, not there. At least for a tender moment. This means that I care about her, and that I have a space in myself for the life of the Other Woman. Then, I become the public for the Other. She has a witness. Her language is in my body. She is not alone. When I try to hear the Other, when I decide to understand her – it is a beginning of the exchange. Exchange of hers and mine fears, helplessness, shame and guilt. She is no longer excluded, left alone in her pain, neither I am. I learn about her, she learns about me. Her story initiates my change. I accept that the ethics of care is my vision of the world.

Radio VoxFem Xicanindia  features music, visual art, film and changemaking by Xicana/Indigenous women.  Episode 2, hosted by Producer Laura Varela, explores the musical stylings of Iris Rodriguez and Yacatsol, a border-crossing, multilingual, decolonial, “cura” music and art project created with her husband, musician and producer Ce Acatl Borsegui, and their children.

The name Yacatsol is one of the indigenous names of the Texas Hill Country of Central Texas and is a nahuatl-rooted word referring to a region of “noses” and “faces” on the stone.

Iris Rodriguez is a multidisciplinary artist, network producer, digital strategist, author, and poet from San Antonio, Texas.  Since 2002 her projects have addressed issues such as environmental racism/justice, family detention, decolonization, cultural arts, guerrilla media, feminism and public archives.  She is the founder of Xica Media, a Xicana-powered network of independent multimedia channels.
