Open My Eyes (Vox Redux Remix) Eventide Contest

While setting up Ableton on my new Mac Studio, I stumbled on a Bill Bruford sample and built a song around it. The dialog was sampled from a Steppenwolf blu-ray to test transferring audio through my new AV receiver. The new kit performed wonderfully and the song made its debut this week on Space Pirate Radio.

Whisper One Word

This track was inspired by the first entirely electronic score for a film. It was a challenge for me because Ableton couldn't render it in sync. So, I had to record it live onto an empty track then render the single track. The extensive automation of the Seeds Polymath device was apparently too much for Live to handle.

Forbidden Boost

The rhythm of this song was inspired by looping a rare Santa Barbara thunderstorm that I was lucky enough to record with binaural microphones on March 21, 2023. I was even luckier when it debuted on Space Pirate Radio on May 29.

Atmospheric River

This started with some interesting synth patterns I generated in Midinous, then grew into a rockin' track with a Bruford beat. The voices in the break were sampled from Space Pirate Radio, which broadcasts over many radio stations, including Twitch.

At The Tone

Warning: contains loud chants and catchy riffs that get stuck in your synapses. Not suitable for airplay, except on the Space Pirate Radio Twitch stream.

Light My Synapses

An experiment where most of the rhythms were obtained by gating long sustained tones. This allowed the entire song to be played on a QWERTY keyboard.

This mix only uses instruments and effects that were available in 1967.
Instant Flanger is used on bass, vocal, and piano. Instant Phaser is used on guitar, shaker, high hat, Rhodes, and “Feed the ducks” vocal.

Eventide - Itchycoo Challenge (Vox Redux Remix) Remix Contest (runner-up)

It starts with a binaural recording of my front yard during the pandemic in Virginia (headphones recommended). Then some whales introduce waves breaking at Leadbetter beach in Santa Barbara while it starts to rain. When the music finally starts, Bill Bruford's drums and Adrian Belew's guitar play along with my Chapman Stick to evoke some Crimson. The song ends after something goes horribly wrong inside the Painted Cave at Santa Cruz Island, but it was probably just a loose wire.

Thanks to Guy Guden's Space Pirate Radio on Twitch (midnight PST every Sunday) for the inspiration. Also, thanks to the 1944 movie 'The Uninvited' for providing my covid mantra, "You haven't a thing to worry about."
