Awesome sound, something I could hear on repeat

A couple of months ago, we picked out our <a href="http://www.stampthewax.com/2013/08/05/top-five-fela-kuti-reworks/" target="_blank">Top Five Fela Kuti Reworks</a> to mark the 16th anniversary of his death. The overwhelming response was confirmation of the feeling that had compelled us to write the feature; that Fela's musical legacy still resonates strongly today. Another testament of this is Red, Hot & Fela, a new compilation marking the 75th anniversary of Fela's birth, containing 13 interpretations by ?uestlove, tUnE-yArDs, Spoek Mathambo, Nneka, Tony Allen and Chance The Rapper. Our standout, however, was an interpretation of 'Sorrow, Tears & Blood' by a selection of names who were initially a little less familiar: Grammy award-winning string ensemble Kronos Quartet and TV On The Radio's Kyp Malone and Tunde Adebimpe.

Fresh off of the success of his debut release ‘Illumine’, the mysterious Croydon newcomer known as Vociferous Sly has returned for another round of psychedelic, lo-fi rap with scorching heater of a track ‘Sunshine’. Dropping on 6.09.18, the music video (produced and co-directed himself) sees Sly return with his signature style of visual magic, this time taking us on a raucous journey through the badlands of Croydon. 

Developed as a conceptual framing for familiar conversations often played out between him and friends, ‘Sunshine’ is a playful odyssey of lyricism and wit; delving into politics, love and the struggle for privacy as a public artist. Considerably more tongue-in-cheek than the style of his drill & grime counterparts - who prefer their visuals icy and cold - ‘Sunshine’ plays more like an acid trip on a hot summers day, transforming into a high-octane rollercoaster of venomous flows and colourful characters. 

Cascading over the beat with infectious rhythms and a compelling array of catchy melodies and punchy harmonies, Vociferous Sly ensures the song is also supplemented by his own status as a producer – choosing to supply his own unique, left-field fusion of sub-driven kicks, jazzy bass melodies when remixing the chiming ukulele samples of Australian lo-fi producer @jhfly to give ‘Sunshine’ its apt moniker and mood.
