In 1987, a blizzard cut off an entire mountain town in Colorado for six days straight. The residents who survived said it wasn’t the snow that frightened them, it was the music. Carols played through the power lines even though the electricity was out. Every night, a different melody drifted through the storm, warped, hollow, and echoing as if coming from beneath the ice.

When the thaw came, the rescue teams found an abandoned community center. Inside: melted wax from hundreds of candles, instruments arranged in a circle, and on the wall, scrawled in ash, the phrase “We Got a Dark Christmas.”

The only surviving tape recovered from the scene was mislabeled “Mesa Babe — Winter Sessions.” No one could explain why; the band hadn’t formed yet. But the tape contained a distorted recording of what sounded like them, the same voices, the same harmonies, decades before their first album.

Experts dismissed it as a hoax, a coincidence, a trick of degraded audio. But when Mesa Babe eventually released We Got a Dark Christmas, the melody matched exactly what was on that tape. Every note. Every pause.

When asked about it in an interview, Addison said quietly,

> “Maybe it wasn’t us who wrote it. Maybe we just remembered it.”



Abigail later joked that if anyone ever plays the song on Christmas Eve,
they should keep the lights on,
because somewhere out there, the storm is still listening.
