Celebrating three years of music with our own platform in Canada! We got the opportunity to dig deep into the artist integrity and upbringing of UK's Rowlanz. 


Q + A WITH @ROWLANZ (MTM, JOULE)

Q. Did you play any instruments as a child?
A1- Yes, I played the piano as a child.  It was one instrument I was always fascinated with, it always sounds so amazing, every time you hear it.

Q. What was underground club culture growing up, where did your artist integrity develop?
A2 - The underground culture when I was growing up was amazing, back then, 
it was all about warehouse party’s or a rave in an industrial unit. In my early raving days, I would most certainly be looking for either a D&B rave, or the latest Hardcore line ups.  My first residency, was at the infamous Monastery night club - an old converted church into an all night rave from midnight until 7am. The club only sold water and milk, so you can get the just of what sort of nightclub it was back then. After many years or playing there and lots of southwest venues, London became a regular fixture for future raves.

Q. Do you have any guilty pleasures in your vinyl collection from when you were younger that you still listen to?
A3 - I have a few guilty pleasures in my vinyl collection, but one of the most popular ones would have to be David Bowie’s - Let’s Dance album. Still sounds incredible now!

Q. How do you maintain balance with life, music, family, and everything in between - how do you schedule time for writing music?
A4 - To be quite honest, I actually don’t know where I find the time, essentially, I just make time as much as I can. Of course, family life is the most important thing, but it’s good to have a balance between everyday life and your passion.

Q. Did your parents have any influence into the music you create today?
A5 - I guess both of my parents have had an Influence on the music I write today, mainly because they were both always playing music in the house growing up. That definitely inspired me later on to have a huge passion for electronic music.

Q. If you could collaborate with any artist in the future, who would it be and what inspires you about them?
A6 - I would love to do a collaboration with Ricardo Villalobos - purely because the man is a pure genius and I would love to see his work programme in the studio...  and of course, you’d never know what could come out of his studio.

Q. What was underground club culture like for you growing up and what influences did you take from it and what's different from it now in 2020?
A. Hard question - I think every period has their beautiful parts. for example, I personally miss that sound, it wasn't sophisticated. On the other hand, I currently consider that the public is more selective. I am glad that many talented artists have appeared and that every day you can discover extraordinary pieces from people who are at the beginning of the road.

Q. What release describes your sound the most to you personally?
A. If we talked about another artist, Janeret - Tartouffe007, if we talk about my release, Levant EP.

Q. Do you have any guilty pleasures in your vinyl collection from when you were younger that you still listen to?
A. Yes, Depeche Mode - Songs of faith and devotion.

Q. Did your parents have any influence into the music you create today?
A. Not really, when I was little I heard more Romanian traditional music, that is not found in my sound.

Q. What is one thing you want to achieve in music that you haven't already?
A. In my sound I really want to bring more modular sounds in my tracks, maybe in the near future I can build a modular setup and hope after this pandemic episode ends, to play music more often at parties.

Q. Lastly, what are your hobbies when you're not writing music, listening to music, or DJing?
A. I quickly find activities depending on my condition. exercise, reading, a light movie, sleep and recently cooking.
