"At the crossroads where man meets machine stands Narvalos, an electronic music project by RBMA alumnus Marco Segato and photographer/video-maker Alessio Costantino (aka Askmeaboutdogs). The italian duo have a totally instinctive approach to music-making, trying to capture the mood of the moment with improvised hardware live-recordings as synthetic representations of imaginary time-spaces. Humans have to drink! They went down to the pond to quench their thirst. Sipping from the cool wet while being on all fours, they saw the reflection of their own faces for the first time. This must have been the beginning of the ongoing struggle of mankind dealing withself-consciousness. Anna and Ole (Das A&O) also met at the water point and much like the myth of the first human couple “Adam and Eve” they ate too much poisoned apples but instead of getting obsessed with one’s ego, they wrote somebeautiful Synth Wave music together! Immortalized on a seven-inch piece of wax, the results are now available on Rat Life Records.

Splits is a new series of releases from OO Recordings that focuses on connecting two artistic minds into one split release.

The first installment is a Nordic affair with Iceland's Jónbjörn on the A-side and Finland's Torolf Stendik on the B-side. Though stylistically operating in different shades of electronic music, both artists share a knack for relentless experimentation, ingenious use of their chosen array of sounds, and Nordic quirks that are hard to put a finger on. The release spans a spectrum of glitchy experimental with hints of IDM and minimalistic techno with industrial twists on the A-side, whereas the B-Side combines slower, downtempo-ish tracks with deeper house cuts with acid tips.

Having been fans of both artists for years, we're more than thrilled to present to You the meeting between two mind-bending talents. The release is mastered by Noah Kin.

INFORMATION ON THE ARTISTS:

Jónbjörn
Jónbjörn is an Icelandic DJ/Producer based in Reykjavík. He has been previously seen on releases on such labels as D.KO Records, FALK, Neo Violence, Lagaffe Tales, and pompon records. Together with Viktor Birgis, Jónbjörn runs Lagaffe Tales and sub-label BROT.

Stylistically, Jónbjörn is known for a fine blend of 90’s IDM and industrial soundscapes, with a healthy dose of contemporary techno and electro in the blend. His productions are airy and even minimalistic, yet still driving and heavy. Time spent behind the decks, as well as years lived in Berlin, have shaped Jónbjörn into a producer that effortlessly balances weirded-out experimentation and dancefloor-friendliness. Breezy like a northern gust on the shores of Iceland.

Torolf Stendik
Speaking of windy coastal towns, Torolf Stendik hails from Vaasa, Finland. One of the many alter egos of Vesa-Matti Kivioja, Torolf Stendik has previously appeared on stellar releases on Meltdown Deejays and Studio Barnhus.

Combining a dub-inspired and playful approach to sounds with an off-kilter way of structuring a dance track, Torolf Stendik provides a weirded-out form of Nordicness. Torolf Stendik’s music feels like a constantly shape-shifting amoeba that can take you from point A into outer space in a span of minutes. Each track on the release - as well as pretty much each track of Torolf Stendik in general - feels like another step on a trippy night out.

We are proud to welcome back San Francisco based DJ and producer @sepehr-a
Sepehr Alimagham for his debut album ‘Shaytoon’. Drenched in nostalgia from his upbringing, ‘Shaytoon’ pays homage to 1970s Iranian albums that were on rotation throughout his youth. Eight tracks of twisted acid, left-of center electro, sludgy psychedelia, and things-you-can-maybe-call-techno are a few of the sonic elements found within. Regular listeners will find Sepehr’s signature perspiratory dance-floor vibe, but some songs also showcase a low-slung, cerebral approach. Sepehr's unique sonic palette carves an interesting space in the dance music world by harnessing the spirit of his cultural ancestors. The artwork pays tribute to ‘70s Iranian pop and funk albums with bold Farsi calligraphy and portraits by Sahra Jajarmikhayat. In relation to the music, the album cover creates a dichotomy much like Throbbing Gristle's ’20 Funk Jazz Greats’. Berakhs (Dance).

Sophie du Palais,  also known as Vrouwe Fataal, is a German vocalist and recording artist from Amsterdam. Sophie du Palais’ sound mixes elements of sinister and commanding vocals – reminiscent of Miss Kittin’ – to create an infectious vortex of panic.

After a night of experimenting in a studio and uploading her their first track on Soundcloud, Pinkman Records stumbled upon the profile. She released twice on the Rotterdam label, which is known for having a third ear out for the very finest sounds of tomorrow.

Sophie du Palais’ and Identified Patient’s haughty, somewhat punky track  ‘Crush On You’ caught fire with the burgeoning international crowd and her stony vocals similarly lined up with their Dekmantel release “The drip” a year later. 

A series of early productions on various artists compilations were scattered throughout 2020.

While dance floors were going wild from Sao Paolo to Moscow, Du Palais was finalizing her debut EP. This collection of clubby productions with new wave sensibilities will be released on BFE Records in Summer 2021.
